Volume 3 Elementary School Life of Demon King and Hero
Chapter 1 The Demon King Becomes a Private Tutor
In the children’s room of the Kamiya household, I sat with my head in my hands, my face contorted with frustration.
“You serious…”
On the other hand, Isumi had a dissatisfied expression.
“What’s wrong? Do you have a problem?”
“No, not really a problem, but…”
After Sasakura and Tanaka-sensei disappeared from school – in other words, two weeks after we started attending – for a while, we didn’t even have an assigned homeroom teacher, and most of the classes were just self-study. But two days ago, a new homeroom teacher arrived.
She was a mild-mannered woman in her late 40s named Haru Kimijima.
Of course, she was nothing like Tanaka-sensei, the problematic teacher.
Her teaching methods were effective, and she had a good reputation among the students… well, any teacher would receive fewer complaints after Tanaka-sensei, I guess.
As I attended Kimijima’s class, I realized something. Well, I had a vague sense of it before…
Today, after returning home, I said to Isumi.
“You, you haven’t understood anything in the class, have you?”
“Shut up! What do you know!?”
“I know you were doodling in your textbook without listening to the teacher during the class.”
Perhaps because she’s still new, Kimijima-sensei seems to be letting it slide.
“…Ugh.”
Seems like I hit the nail on the head.
Well, I can’t blame her entirely.
The textbook doesn’t have furigana for kanji characters.
Thus, she can’t understand it just with the reading comprehension skills Zekar gave her.
In this world, the education system is quite advanced.
In my original world, they wouldn’t be teaching 11-year-olds how to calculate the area of a triangle.
It’s only natural she lacks knowledge about this world’s social conditions and history, and even in science, there are many things I don’t know.
Therefore, Isumi… Hero Shirene not keeping up with the class is somewhat unavoidable.
It’s unavoidable, but…
I decided to assess Isumi’s academic abilities.
For now, I gave her some simple calculation problems that are easy to evaluate…
“What’s 4 + 3?”
Though I thought it might be a bit too much to make fun of the Hero-sama like this, I asked the question.
As soon as she heard the problem, she began folding her fingers.
And after pondering for a good 5 minutes, she answered.
“It’s 7.”
“…That’s correct.”
“Hmm, I can do this much too!”
Well, she says that, but…
“What’s 8 + 6?”
When I asked the next question, she started folding her fingers again.
And when she folded all her fingers, she froze.
“H-How unfair! I don’t have enough fingers!!”
At that moment, I just couldn’t help but sigh.
So, that’s the conversation from the beginning.
By the way, both the original world and this world use the decimal system. Perhaps because we have the same number of fingers.
In this regard, it was fortunate for me.
Afterward, I tried giving her more calculation problems.
For addition, if the answer is one digit, she somehow manages it, but for subtraction, she makes a mistake every other time, even with one-digit numbers. As for multiplication and division, she doesn’t even grasp the meaning even after I explain it.
Furthermore, the language. Can you believe this girl can’t read hiragana anymore?
Of course, Zekar seems to have given her knowledge of hiragana as well.
But it seems that she completely forgot it in just a few weeks since being reincarnated into this world.
Next is social studies and science. This is even more disastrous.
It’s natural that she doesn’t know the history and geography of this world from the beginning.
But what on earth is not knowing how vegetables and fruits are grown?
She doesn’t even have the knowledge of sowing seeds in the soil!
Of course, she has never even heard of fertilizers.
Certainly, such knowledge is common sense even in her world.
“How did you even go on adventures without knowing how to read maps or use a compass? And calculating money must have been troublesome too.”
“Hmph, I left those things to my comrades. I had reliable friends to rely on. Besides, if I needed money, I could always get it from the church, right?”
My head starts to ache.
Certainly, using the right people in the right places is important.
If you consider the reward for the role of being pushed onto her by the human race as a hero, giving her unlimited money makes some sense.
But whether or not she should learn basic education is a completely different issue.
I spoke coldly.
“Starting today, for 2 hours, when you come back from school, I’ll be your private tutor.”
“W-What! Are you telling me to learn from the Demon King!? Can I accept such humiliation?”
“You think not being able to do simple addition and subtraction is humiliating!?”
I couldn’t help but yell.
Perhaps because I raised my voice, Hikaru entered the children’s room, asking, “What’s wrong, Onii-chan?”
I should have taught her to knock, but she’s just a little kid, so I’ll let it slide.
Then, a sudden idea struck me, and I asked Hikaru.
“Hikaru, do you know the answer to 8 + 6?”
“Let me see… 15… no, is it 14?”
“Wow, that’s correct! Good job, Hikaru.”
When I praised her, Hikaru smiled proudly.
“Yeah, we learned it at kindergarten.”
It’s impressive that she’s learning carry-over addition at the age of 5. This world’s education system is indeed advanced.
I had assumed from our previous conversation that Hikaru could handle this level of math, but I’m still amazed.
And now, I looked at Isumi with narrowed eyes and asked.
“So, what are you going to do?”
“I-I’ll… study.”
Well, there’s nothing else to say if a 5-year-old beats an 11-year-old… no, a 16-year-old.
And so, from that day on, I reluctantly took on the role of the Hero-sama’s private tutor.
By the way, it took a good 50 days before the Hero-sama finally managed to master two-digit addition. It was already well into autumn, and the weather had turned chilly by then.
