Volume 2 The Demon King and the Hero Confront the Bully
Chapter 9 The Demon King, Ignored by the Homeroom Teacher
After finishing our conversation with Manabu, we each took our seats.
Of course, I had no idea which seat to choose, so I asked Sora for help.
I ended up in the back right corner of the classroom, just as mentioned in Kageyo’s diary, and Sora’s seat was to my left.
On the other hand, Isumi’s seat was towards the front of the classroom, a bit further away from mine.
I can’t help but feel a bit uneasy that she’s sitting one seat apart… No, maybe worrying too much would be overprotective.
I looked at my desk and furrowed my brows.
There were various prank writings like ‘Die,’ ‘Coward,’ and ‘Disappear, ghost.’
Kageyo, did you really endure this kind of bullying?
Sora said to me, “Um, I’ll help you clean it up later.”
However, I tried to sound cheerful as I replied.
“It’s no big deal, really. Studying won’t be a problem at all.”
“Yeah, but… ”
“It’s fine, I said it’s fine.”
I smiled and was about to sit on my chair… but there were a bunch of thumbtacks placed on it.
Well, what a childish prank, to say the least.
I moved the thumbtacks aside and asked Sora, “Where should I put these? It seems a waste to throw them away, right?”
“Um, in that toolbox over there… Are you okay?”
“Huh? What do you mean? They didn’t actually pierce me.”
“No, it’s not about that…”
“Oh, it’s probably just Sasakura’s way of welcoming me back, now that he knows I’ve returned. There’s no use in getting bothered by it.”
To be honest, I didn’t really care.
For the former Kageyo, it might have been painful bullying, but as the Demon King, it’s nothing more than a cute prank by some kids.
I tidied up the thumbtacks in the toolbox Sora pointed to and sat back on my chair.
At that moment, the school bell chimed, and an adult man entered the classroom through the front door.
Probably the homeroom teacher.
If I recall correctly from Kageyo’s diary, his name should be ‘Mr. Tanaka.’
Confirming that, Manabu raised his voice, “Stand up!” and the children all stood up.
Then, he said, “Bow!” and they all bowed, and finally, “Sit down!” and they took their seats.
I followed everyone a little late.
I was worried about how Isumi would react, but she seemed to obey without any resistance.
For now, it’s a relief.
Mr. Tanaka greeted us with a “Good morning” and opened a book-like object.
After that, he called out the names of the children in alphabetical order.
Each student responded with a prompt “Yes.”
Seems like he’s taking attendance. Come to think of it, that book must be the attendance register.
After finishing the attendance check for the names starting with ‘A,’ it was time for the names starting with ‘K.’ I thought he would call out the names of Kamiyai Kageyo and Kamiya Isumi next, but…
Kageyo’s name wasn’t called, and instead, Isumi’s name was.
Isumi answered with a “Yes.” It seems she has no intention of needlessly opposing.
Thinking that way, Mr. Tanaka proceeded to call out the next student’s name without addressing the issue.
Everyone’s attendance check was finished except for me.
I called out, “Teacher.”
However, Mr. Tanaka didn’t even look in my direction. Instead, he said something else.
“Today, we have the joyous news that Kamiya Isumi has returned to the classroom. Let’s all continue to be friendly and kind to her.”
…Ah, yes. It was written in Kageyo’s diary that he was being ignored by the teacher too.
I was somewhat prepared for it, but to be so blatant about it was unexpected.
I don’t mind if it’s just kids playing pranks on each other, but I don’t like it when teachers behave like this.
Now, how should I handle this?
Before I could take any action, Sora stood up.
“Teacher! Please stop ignoring Kamiya Kageyo!”
Upon his protest, Mr. Tanaka’s face showed clear displeasure.
However, before Mr. Tanaka could say anything, Sasakura stood in front of Sora, seemingly appearing out of nowhere in the classroom.
“Sora, enough of this! Don’t disrupt the harmony of the class!”
“What harmony? Everyone, including you, was bullying Kageyo. Even the teacher!”
“Hmph, you’re just as guilty.”
“Yes, I am. That’s why I’m asking everyone to stop!”
Sasakura’s face turned red, shaking with anger.
This isn’t good… Before I could think further, Sasakura swung his right arm and tried to punch Sora.
“Sora-kun!”
I shouted and stepped in between Sasakura and Sora.
Sasakura’s fist landed a clean hit on my right cheek.
It did hurt quite a bit.
Had I still possessed the body of the Demon Lord Benes, such an attack would have had no effect, but in Kamiya Kageyo’s body, it was enough to send a shock through me. My nose started bleeding, and I almost fell to the floor.
“Kageyo-kun!”
Sora supported me, holding me up.
“I’m fine,” I assured him, regaining my footing.
Against a hero like Shirene, I might have yielded, but I couldn’t allow myself to be defeated by a kid like this. My pride as the Demon Lord wouldn’t stand for it.
Sasakura clicked his tongue.
“Do you brats think you can defy me!?”
I glared at Sasakura and retorted, “Of course we do.”
“I won’t allow myself to follow your orders,” I added, making my point clear.
“Do you even care what happens to your sister!?” Sasakura snapped.
He’s still bringing that up!
I won’t let him get away with this.
“You were supposed to keep your hands off Hikaru, remember?”
“Shut up!”
I must protect Hikaru.
It was Kamiya Kageyo’s wish before the accident.
As the one who inherited Kamiya Kageyo’s body and memories, I have an obligation to uphold that wish!
Even if it means enduring some pain… That’s what I was thinking when something happened before I could act.
Someone else swiftly kicked Sasakura’s abdomen before me. It was isumi.
I knew from our battle in the Demon Lord’s castle.
Heroes are skilled in hand-to-hand combat, among other things.
Even if her body had turned into that of an elementary school girl, she hadn’t forgotten her martial arts skills.
Sasakura crumbled to the ground.
Isumi spat out, “Enough of this scum.”
I thanked Isumi.
“Thank you, Isumi.”
“Don’t get it wrong. I’m not helping you. But I won’t forgive anyone who tries to harm Hikaru.”
Saying that, Isumi attempted to step on Sasakura’s back.
But the homeroom teacher, Mr. Tanaka, stopped her.
“Isumi-kun! Stop it! I won’t allow any further violence.”
Isumi clicked her tongue but refrained from continuing her actions.
Instead, she turned to Mr. Tanaka and asked a question.
“Why is that?”
“Violence is unacceptable.”
“He said he would harm my sister. Are you telling me to just let that slide?”
“I-I don’t recall hearing that.”
Isumi furrowed her brow skeptically.
“Were you not paying attention?”
“I don’t know, I don’t know, I don’t know! Sasakura-kun would never say something like that!”
“…I apologize, but could it be that your hearing is impaired? I recommend seeking medical advice for a diagnosis.”
“Are you mocking me, the homeroom teacher!?”
“No, that’s not my intention, but…”
“Enough! Silence! I will take Sasakura-kun to the infirmary! You two, be prepared!”
Mr. Tanaka spat out those words, then took Sasakura and left the classroom.
Oh well, the first day of elementary school turned out to be quite troublesome.
