Chapter 7 The Demon Lord and the Hero Arrive at Classroom 5-1
Following Sora’s lead, we headed towards the entrance.
Sora hurriedly stopped Isumi, who was trying to enter the school building with her outdoor shoes on.
“No, Isumi-chan, you can’t go in with your regular shoes on!”
“Huh? Is that so?”
“You really have amnesia, huh?”
During my hospital stay, I had seen a “school drama” on TV, so I knew that we needed to change into indoor shoes inside the school building. Isumi should have watched it with me too, but she seemed disinterested.
However, even I didn’t know where Kageyo Kamiya’s shoe locker was.
So, I asked Sora, “Where are our shoe lockers?”
“Oh, right. Both of you have amnesia. The 5th-grade shoe lockers are over here. They’re arranged in the order of the Japanese syllabary.”
I quickly found Kageyo Kamiya’s shoe locker, but Isumi looked puzzled.
Well, it’s natural since she can’t even remember the kanji of her own name. She hasn’t retained any knowledge of the Japanese syllabary. I tried to drill that into her head during my hospital stay, but she couldn’t grasp it.
“Isumi, over here,” I said, handing Isumi her indoor shoes.
I changed into my indoor shoes as well, and the size was a perfect fit. Well, that was to be expected.
“Hmm, why is my shoe locker next to yours?” Isumi questioned.
“Because they’re arranged in alphabetical order of the last names. So, if our last names are the same, it’s only natural,” I explained.
“I don’t get it,” she replied with a puzzled look.
Upon hearing our conversation, Sora smiled faintly and chuckled. There really wasn’t any other way to explain it.
As we changed into our indoor shoes, Sora began another topic of conversation. “By the way…”
“Kageyo-kun, Isumi-chan, you both seem quite strong in fights. I didn’t know that,” she said.
“Well, naturally. I am the hero, after all. I can’t lose to a demon lord,” I responded.
Hey, cut it out! Don’t say things like that!
Sora’s expression contorted even more.
“Y-You mean… like in Dragon Quest?” Sora asked.
“Yes, I’ve defeated dragons several times. They were formidable foes,” Isumi replied.
“I was able to rescue Princess Laura,” Isumi added.
“Huh? Who’s Princess Laura?” Sora questioned.
I could only sigh. I wished Isumi would hold back a little, but I also couldn’t quite grasp what Sora was talking about.
Based on my research so far, there didn’t seem to be any dragons in this world. Could it be that Sora was referring to the “video games” mentioned in Kageyo’s diary?
I didn’t want anyone to know about the whole “reincarnated into another world” situation for various reasons, so I decided to leave Sora’s misunderstanding as it was.
While ignoring those aspects, I spoke to Sora.
“Both Isumi and I had near-death experiences due to the accident. It’s like we awakened some sort of strength…”
“Eh, there’s no way that happened.”
“Hahaha, well, yeah, you’re probably right.”
“That’s true.”
We shared a vague smile.
Did we manage to brush it off… I wonder?
Sora hesitated to say something.
“But if you both are so strong, couldn’t you have defeated Sasakura before that accident happened? Well, never mind. It was my fault.”
Hmm.
Recalling the September entry in his diary, I understood that he felt guilty about what happened to Kageyo.
However, allowing guilt to dominate him forever wouldn’t be beneficial for this young boy.
“Don’t worry about it anymore. Earlier, Sora chose me over Sasago. That alone makes me happy,” I reassured him.
“Really?”
“Yeah.”
“…Thank you, Kageyo-kun.”
Sora burst into tears.
“Hey, come on, don’t cry like that, especially here.”
“Yeah, you’re right. But I… I was just thinking, what if you and Isumi had died back then? How could I ever forgive myself for that? Even if I heard that you both survived, I thought you wouldn’t forgive me… I thought we could never play together again… Yet here we are now… I’m so happy.”
Sora must have had a hard time as well. He was burdened with guilt after Kageyo’s accident.
“Well, both Isumi and I don’t remember anything about the accident.”
“Huh, but…”
“That’s why we have amnesia. We won’t hold any grudges against you, Sora.”
There were no entries in Kageyo’s diary about the day of the accident.
That was only natural since he was hospitalized after the accident.
I could make various speculations based on previous entries and Sora’s behavior, but they were still just assumptions.
“Really, I’m sorry,” Sora apologized again.
After that, he guided us to Classroom 5-1.
I had wondered if there were Class 2 and Class 3 as well since it was called 1st Class, but apparently, there was only one 5th-grade class.
If Isumi and I were even “forgetting” that fact, Sora was there to explain it to us.
“Though, in the sixth grade, there are up to two classes,” Sora said.
Anyway, we entered Classroom 5-1.
Inside, about twenty students had already arrived, and they were looking at us with slightly curious eyes.
Hmm? Did something happen?
Just like Sora, maybe they also feel guilty for bullying Kageyo.
However, my speculation seemed to be slightly off.
Representing the students, a boy wearing glasses approached us… no, he went up to Isumi and greeted her.
“Good morning, Isumi-kun.”
“Yeah, good morning.”
“Congratulations on your discharge. But what you did was not commendable.”
“What? What are you talking about?”
“Everyone was watching from the classroom window. They saw you assaulting Sasakura-kun.”
I see.
So, everyone saw the exchange between Isumi and Sasago from the classroom window.
Now, how should Isumi respond to this?
