Chapter 5 The Demon King and the Hero Arrive at the Elementary School
As I recalled the diary I read yesterday, Sora timidly asked me,
“I guess I won’t be forgiven… right?”
Uncertain about how to respond, Isumi chimed in,
“What’s the matter, Demon King?”
“Well…”
“I’m not sure what happened, but the other person seems to be sincerely apologizing. You shouldn’t be indifferent about it, I think.”
I hadn’t shown Isumi Kageyo’s diary, nor did I explain the details. She didn’t seem eager to hear about it either.
After nodding to Isumi and turning my attention back to Sora, I noticed he was trembling.
I… no, Kageyo seemed afraid that forgiveness might not be granted.
Perhaps just apologizing like this requires immense courage.
I took a deep breath, and then exhaled.
Alright, I’ve calmed down now.
It would be unreasonable to direct my anger towards Sora just because I read Kageyo’s diary.
Besides, the real culprit is not him.
Moreover, having ‘friends’ is valuable in my life as an elementary school student.
Both Isumi and I have so much to learn about this world of ‘elementary school.’
So, I must put on a smile, even if it’s forced.
“It’s okay, Sora-kun. It’s not your fault.”
“…Can you forgive me?”
“Yeah.”
Real Kageyo might not be able to forgive.
But I know.
What happens when past grudges keep escalating between each other.
The result was the wars in that world and the hero consumed by one-sided righteousness.
Isumi asked me,
“What happened, exactly?”
“I’ll explain later.”
“I see.”
Though I’m not sure if she fully understood, she nodded and said to Sora.
“Sora-kun, I have a favor to ask.”
“What is it?”
“Could you guide me to school?”
Sora’s eyes widened.
“Huh? Why?”
Well, of course, he’d react that way.
Isumi wore a puzzled expression.
“Huh? Is there a problem?”
A big problem indeed!
Asking someone, especially Sora, to guide her to the school she used to attend is just too confusing!
Even Sora seemed skeptical, as his expression showed.
“What happened, Isumi-chan?”
Now, how should I dodge this?
…But before I could even think about it, Sora had already made his own assumptions.
“Could it be… Isumi-chan, you have amnesia due to the accident?”
It’s not exactly like that… Well, in a way, it’s not entirely wrong.
Actually, this misunderstanding might be useful.
I deliberately put on a serious expression and said to Sora,
“The truth is, that’s right.”
“Really?! For real!?”
“Not just Isumi, but even I have some fuzzy memories. So, I’d appreciate it if you could guide us around the elementary school. We don’t want to worry everyone, so please keep it a secret.”
“I-I see. Okay.”
It seems like he believed us.
With this, asking Sora about things we don’t know regarding elementary school life will seem less suspicious.
Isumi whispered in my ear, making sure Sora couldn’t hear.
“Why on earth did you come up with the idea of me having amnesia?”
“It makes it easier for us to inquire about school life, doesn’t it? After all, we don’t have memories of the real Kageyo and Isumi before the accident.”
“Hmm… You truly live up to the name of the Demon King. It’s a cunning strategy.”
Well, maybe so.
Sora looked concerned as he asked us,
“Do you even forget where the school is?”
“Yeah, I remember the general direction.”
“I see, so you really have amnesia… Well then, I’ll guide you to the elementary school.”
Sora took the lead, and we followed. I nodded in agreement, and Isumi complied obediently.
Before long, we reached the elementary school gate.
Isumi exclaimed, dazed.
“This is the elementary school, huh? Quite a big building. It’s almost like a castle.”
Indeed, while not as grand as a demon king’s castle, the elementary school building is quite large.
Sora laughed at Isumi’s reaction.
“A castle, huh… Isumi-chan, you have an amusing way of thinking.”
“Is that so?”
“Yeah. And, you’ve been talking like a boy since earlier.”
Those words seemed to bother Isumi a bit.
“Um, I’ve always been a girl, you know.”
Well, Heroine Shirene is also a girl, after all.
“Oh, sorry. I was just thinking for a moment.”
“It’s alright. People have often told me that I lack feminine qualities.”
“Really? I don’t think you were like that before the accident…”
A slightly awkward yet not quite aligning conversation between Isumi and Sora.
I could only manage a vague wry smile.
As we were about to head towards the entrance of the school building, a large-built boy with a smirk on his face stood in our way.
“Hey, Kageyo. Long time no see.”
Sora said with a timid voice.
“Sa… sakura-kun, go… good morning.”
The nametag on the hulking boy read, “5th Grade Class 1, Sasakura Gouki.”
Ah, so this is the bully boss mentioned in the diary. Sasakura, huh?
I stared back at Sasakura intently.
He forcefully pushed my shoulder with his right hand.
“What’s with the lack of greetings, Ghost-boy?”
And so, our elementary school life as the Demon King and Hero had begun.
