Volume 2 The Demon King and the Hero Confront the Bully
Chapter 3 Demon King Reads the Diary (Part 1)
I decided to start reading Kageyo’s diary from the very first page.
Honestly, Kageyo’s handwriting was messy, and deciphering it was quite a challenge.
Fortunately, there weren’t too many kanji characters used, which made it easier.
The diary began in April of this year, around the time Kageyo entered the fifth grade of elementary school.

【April 5th (Sunday)】
Starting a new school tomorrow! I wonder if I’ll be able to make friends. I hope I won’t be bullied like at my previous school.
【April 6th (Monday)】
I quickly became friends with the boy sitting next to me!
His name is Sora Aoi. He’s just like me, a fan of video games. Not only does he have a Famicom, but he also owns a Mark III! That’s so amazing!
My dad doesn’t like video games, but Sora-kun’s dad plays games with him. He even said they’re going to buy the new gaming console coming out this year. I’m so jealous.
【April 7th (Tuesday)】
Today, I played games at Sora-kun’s house again.
At my house, if I play Famicom for over an hour, Mom or Isumi gets angry, but Sora-kun’s mom is kind.
By the way, Sora-kun is really good at games. He easily rescued Princess Peach.

In the diary, for a while, there were joyful entries about playing with a friend named Sora Aoi.
However, towards the end of May, things started to change.

〔May 23rd (Saturday)〕
After school, I met up with Sora-kun at the park. To my surprise, he was already surrounded by the same group of kids who used to bully me at my previous school, the Sasakura gang.
Back at my old school, those guys never went as far as causing nosebleeds.
I wanted to run away, but I mustered up the courage.
In the end, I got hit and ended up with a nosebleed too, but I didn’t back down.
Sora-kun is my friend, after all.
It turns out that Sora-kun had been dealing with bullying from the Sasakura gang since he was in second grade. They even took away his game cartridges.
But I’m on Sora-kun’s side.
Just like how Isumi helped me back at my old school, this time, I’ll be the one to help Sora-kun!

I was quite impressed with the strong sense of courage that Kageyo showed. However, the actions of the bully, Sasakura, were escalating rapidly.

[May 25th (Monday)]
Sora-kun and I got beaten up badly by Sasakura gang.
Sora-kun managed to escape, but I couldn’t, and I thought I might end up with broken bones.
* * * * *
At this point, it seems like Sora is caught up in the situation with Kageyo, but on the other hand, one could also speculate that Sora might not have abandoned Kageyo and instead tried to escape together. Of course, since I don’t have a clear understanding of the circumstances back then, it remains a mere speculation on my part.
From there, the bullying gang led by Sasakura continued to torment Kageyo and Sora, especially targeting Kageyo on a daily basis.

〔June 2 (Tuesday)〕
I was made to play wrestling with Sasakura. Even though it was just play, when I fought back a little, they accused me of cheating and threw me down in front of everyone.
〔June 5 (Friday)〕
During lunch break, Sasakura took me to the rooftop and told me to jump off the schoolyard. When I said no, they all beat me up right there. My nose bled a lot.
〔June 18 (Thursday)〕
I almost got pushed out of the classroom window. No one came to help me. Sora just pretended not to see, and even Isumi said it was because I was weak. The teacher is on Sasakura’s side too. Why is this happening?
〔June 20 (Saturday)〕
Sora told me that Sasakura is the nephew of the vice-principal. That’s why the teacher supports him.
〔June 30 (Tuesday)〕
After school, Sasakura suddenly said to me, “You’re dead.” Then they tied me up with a jump rope and made me lie down in front of the blackboard. Takaya was pretending to be a priest, saying strange things like, “Nanmyohorengekyo.” They were pretending it was my funeral, playing “Funeral make-believe.”
Even though they are doing such terrible things to me, Sora doesn’t help me. Instead, he joins in, pretending to mourn at my funeral.
After that, Sasakura and the others tried to take my “corpse” to the incinerator. But Isumi stopped them, and she even said, “Because Kageyo is such a coward, I feel embarrassed too.”

As I read on, the contents infuriate me.
Up until the point of play wrestling, I could almost see it as typical childish fights.
However, telling someone to jump off the rooftop is nothing but telling them to “die.”
And to think they even played “Funeral make-believe”?
It feels like they are completely denying Kageyo’s identity.
The fact that even the boy named Sora, whom he helped, his twin sister Isami, and even the teacher have all abandoned him is just too heartbreaking.
Of course, compared to the children during the wars in the previous world or the past of this world, one might say it’s not as severe.
But having no one by his side is still painfully hard to bear.
With anger and a sense of helplessness shaking me, I turn to the next page.
