Chapter 5 The Demon King Learns the World and History
The morning of the fifth day since we reincarnated into this world arrived.
Since that incident, the Hero hadn’t gone on a rampage or attempted to use magic.
I pressed a button on the tool called the “Remote Control” and turned on the “Television.”
On the screen, a female announcer holding a microphone began to speak from the other side.
“It’s 7:00 am on Thursday, September 17, 1987. Everyone, let’s do our best today! To all the elementary and middle school students, have you recovered from your summer vacation blues?”
Hmm, the technology in this world is truly amazing.
To be able to project both sound and visuals from a distant location so beautifully.
As I marveled at it, the Hero expressed her displeasure.
“Hey, don’t turn on the TV without permission.”
“You seemed still asleep, so I turned it on.”
“I’m saying it’s disrupting my peaceful sleep.”
Hmm, well, that does make sense.
“I apologize for that. Let me humbly apologize,”
When I sincerely apologized and turned off the TV, she let out a disapproving click of her tongue.
I spoke to her, “However, no matter how much information we gather about this world, it won’t be enough. There’s no tool more beneficial than a television to learn about this world, right?”
“Why do we need information about this world?”
“Well, I’m going to live in this world as a fifth-grade elementary student from now on. It’s only natural, don’t you think?”
“But I…”
“I’ve said it many times before, but there’s no way to return to our original world. Even if we could go back, without the ability to use magic or swordsmanship, neither the Hero nor the Demon Lord would have any power here. So, we should put efforts into adapting to this world.”
“…Tsk.”
In these past five days, I investigated about Kageyo Kamiya and Isumi Kamiya.
They are twins living in an area called “Setagaya Ward, Tokyo, Japan.”
Their family consists of five members, including the twins, their parents, and their younger sister. Their father’s name is ” Higakure,” their mother’s name is “Akari,” and their sister’s name is “Hikaru.” Both sets of grandparents are alive, but it seems they don’t live together.
They attend “Setagaya Elementary School,” and their class is 5th Grade, Class 1.
By the way, it seems Hikaru is currently in kindergarten, in the “Nencho” (pre-kindergarten) group.
Though we don’t know all the details yet, we have a basic understanding.
Most of this information was gathered from Akari and Hikaru, who come to visit every day. Higakure, being a busy “salaryman,” hasn’t visited since the first day.
The Hero clenched her fists with frustration.
“I can’t accept it that way!”
“Why not?”
“What value do I have if I’m not the Hero!?”
Her voice sounded like a scream.
“Is being the Hero the only thing that gives you value?”
“What else is there!? Defeating the Demon Lord as the Hero is the only meaning of my existence!”
I understand now.
That’s why she could use the self-sacrificial spell, “Balas Eternity,” without hesitation.
At the same time, I think it’s heartbreaking.
To not see any value in oneself outside of the role given by others.
Although, the same could be said for me, the Demon Lord.
“The perception of one’s value is something we find within ourselves. Both you and I.”
“I have no value other than being the Hero.”
“Is that really true?”
As I asked, she averted her gaze.
It’s not surprising.
For 16 years, she was revered as the “Hero-sama,” and that was her entire identity.
It might be challenging for her to accept a completely different life suddenly.
But, if that’s the case…
I asked the Hero.
“I have one question for you.”
“What is it?”
“After defeating me, the Demon Lord, what were you planning to do?”
In response to that question, she fell silent.
“After defeating the Demon Lord, what then?”
“If the duty of the Hero is to defeat the Demon Lord, then once the Demon Lord is defeated, the Hero is no longer needed. So, what were your plans after that?”
“…As if I would know. I am the Hero. There is nothing for me other than defeating the Demon Lord!”
It’s a sad tale.
Once again, I felt a sense of disgust towards the leaders of the human race in the original world.
To have turned a sixteen-year-old girl into the “ideal Hero-sama” to this extent…
“You should learn about various worlds.”
“What do you mean?”
“If you hate TV, how about trying to read this?”
I said that and showed her a “History Learning Manga” that I had borrowed from the hospital’s library the other day.
It’s an interesting book with the history of this world written in an easy-to-understand manner.
I’ve already read up to volume 16 out of the total 20 volumes.
Right now, I’m reading the chapter on the “Meiji Restoration,” and the history of this world is truly fascinating.
One story that particularly captivated me was about a regional lord named “Oda Nobunaga” who sought to unify the entire country. His unstoppable progress and the swift downfall caused by a rebellion of a trusted general make for a turbulent life, even from the perspective of the Demon Lord.
However, she scornfully rejected it.
“I don’t need to know about this world’s history! What’s the point of knowing about things before I was born?”
“Aren’t you curious about the cause of those wars as the Hero?”
“Because there was an evil and unjust Demon Lord and demons!”
I see.
Undoubtedly, she is a girl filled with a strong sense of justice.
However, her perspective seems too one-sided.
No, it’s more accurate to say she lacks an appreciation for the value of learning.
On second thought, it was fortunate that she was reincarnated as an “elementary school student” in this world.
If she can learn about various perspectives and values in this world, her sense of justice might grow in a positive direction.
“Regardless, today is the day we get discharged from the hospital. We’ll be going home together and attending the same school starting tomorrow. Let’s try to get along, shall we?”
“Damn it! Why did all this have to happen?”
The Hero seems frustrated, but I can’t help but look forward to leaving the hospital and starting school.
This world is still full of unknowns. The more I learn about it, the more intriguing it becomes.
In the early afternoon of that day, the time finally came for us to be discharged. Our parents and Hikaru came to pick us up.
