Chapter 4 – Mysterious Letter –
A few days after I was fired from the academy, my life changed drastically, of course.
One of the most excruciating things about it was the change in the people of the city.
In the blink of an eye, the fact that I was fired for causing a terrible scandal on campus became a well-known fact in the city, and what had previously been treated as a star of the common people has taken a turn for the worse and has became a target of persecution.
In this city, which is not very large except for the academy grounds, most of its residents do business with its faculty and students.
In other words, no matter how much we may be commoners, we can’t forgive someone who has behaved poorly to a valued customer.
Just walking down the street, they look at you with disgust, and in the worst case, they say, “I have nothing to sell to you! You’re going to die now!” There were times when they would spout things like “human scum” that I was sick of thinking back then.
At this rate, it will soon become impossible to even shop.
I’ve got to get out of this town before that happens….
It’s pretty obvious who leaked the story to the public, but even after achieving their goal of getting me fired, they still aren’t satisfied, and they’re still very effective at harassing me. Thanks to that, there is no place for me in this town anymore.
Thinking about this, I took a bite of the little bit of dried meat I had in storage.
It’s a cheap and unseasoned preserved food, but it’s an appropriate meal for me right now, I say to my self as I roll up the stack of mail I’ve accumulated, self-deprecating in my mind that it’s a worthy meal for me now.
Most of them were addressed to Frey Garnett, who was a teacher at the Academy not too long ago, and none of them are addressed to me, who is now unemployed.
I open the seal and confirm again that it has nothing to do with me right now, and then I get rid of everything.
While I continue to do this kind of idle work to avoid thinking about unpleasant things, I find a strange envelope among the unopened mail.
「The sender’s name…isn’t there…?」
Unlike the other envelopes, that simple envelope did not contain any information about the sender anywhere.
In spite of this, the fact that the address is written in extremely polite and neat letters makes it even more suspicious.
With just a little bit of tension, I slowly open the envelope.
Then a single blank piece of paper emerges from inside.
One small piece of paper that isn’t even folded.
It’s just a piece of paper without any embellishment at all.
And on that paper, in the same polite and clean letters as the address, only the date, time and place were written briefly.
「What the hell is this….」
The suspiciousness of the letter caused an involuntary outburst of confusion.
I turned the letter over and checked every inch of it, but nothing else was written on it.
It doesn’t seem to be some kind of code, nor does it seem to be filled with magic.
I take another look at the written words.
The date and time written on it is midnight today, and the location, although approximate, turns out to be a forest outside the city in coordinates.
「This is stupid….」
I put it together with the envelope and toss it towards the pile of stuff I’ve gotten rid of so far.
For the most part, this is just another way of harassment from those guys.
You never know what’s waiting for you when you go there out of curiosity.
I toss the last piece of dried meat into my mouth and lie down on the bed, just lying there in a daze.
As I lie down and just doze off, many thoughts run through my mind.
Will Lily be okay? I hope she doesn’t receive any strange rumors about the fact that I’ve been teaching her…..
No matter how talented she is, she too comes from a commoner’s background. It wouldn’t be surprising if she were to be trampled over at any time, just like me.
If that happens, I can’t regret it, but what I can do now is to pray that she will behave herself and spend her life at the academy peacefully and safely.
「Father….Mother….Naru…. I’m not giving up yet….」
I talk to the three people who are now deceased who have always supported me in my heart.
Naturally, I don’t get a response, but I feel a little better for doing so.
I’m going to leave here tomorrow.
I make up my mind to do so.
I haven’t even decided where I’m going yet, but it’s better than standing here at a standstill.
Just as I was about to close my eyes, I caught a glimpse of that envelope at the edge of my vision.
