Chapter 10 – Meanwhile –
Translated by zirmir

――While Frey was having a meeting with the demon king’s daughters for a second time.
Dozens of students were gathered in the schoolyard of the Luxe Martial & Magic Academy.
The students slowly sorted themselves out, turning from a haphazard bunch to small teams, slowly
completing their formation as an army unit.
「Err…… today we’re going to be having a mock combat drill where we’ll learn how to move as a group」
A middle-aged male teacher announced this to the group of students standing in the yard.
「Err…… the Felds’ Martial Arts Tournament will be held soon this year. Strong students will be participating from all over the country.
Today’s training will also be used for selecting participants from our school, so don’t skimp out.」
「Yes!」
In response to the male teacher’s proclamation, the students in the yard loudly replied, the eagerness of those wishing to participate being represented in the volume of their voice.
This would be tenth tournament to be held this year, in honour of the warrior Feld, a comrade of Lux.
All the tournaments held so far had been won by none other than the students from this school.
Winning the tournament didn’t just gave a vague sense of order, it also allowed people to display their prowess in front of various influential
people who had arrived from all across the country, in search of powerful and talented people.
It would bes a great opportunity for those belonging to a prominent family, allowing them a chance to improve their position in their family,
and for those hailing from a more common household, it could be a stepping stone that would allow them to rise to the top.
As a result, there would always be a fierce competition on campus for the limited number of slots available.
「Err-……so the representative of the teams I’m going to call please come forward. Err……, first Arius Squad!」
「Yes~」
(TN: はぁ~い said in Ha~i)
Giving a non-chalant reply, Maia Jarvis slowly arrived in front of the teacher while fiddling with her purple hair.
This attitude would usually arouse a need to discipline within a teacher, but few teacher’s in the academy were capable of trying to do so
with the eldest daughter of the Jarvis family, a great family renown for their swordsmanship throughout the nation.
If Frey were to be in charge of the group, he would probably have reprimanded her, but the teacher present could do nothing
but sigh and move onto the next group.
「Err-…..next is Atora Squad.」
「Yes!」
A dignified reply, the exact opposite of Maia’s, echoed through out the schoolyard.
And stepping out, Lily Herschel walked with a resolute attitude, portaying a manner similar to her response,
eventually walking up to stand face to face with Maia.
「Oh my, is Lily going to be my partner?」
「So it seems. Please be gentle with me.」
「Ufufu, I heard that you were very depressed after what happened to your beloved sensei, are you okay?」
Maia attempted to provoke her, while Lily mockingly laughed at her attempts.
Everyone in the academy knew that Lily was a student who had obtained the attention of Frey.,
「Don’t worry. All of sensei’s teachings are imprinted on my body.」
In response to Maia’s blatant provocations, Lily fluently responded in her own manner.
「It doesn’t make any sense for it to be imprinted on a body.
Ah, could it be that……you were also being inappropriately instructed by that commoner……
But you’re also a commoner, you might be suitable for each other.」
Maia giggled and gave a sarcastic smile while attempting to hide that it was a plot orchestrated by her.
But Lily didn’t say anything back to Maia.
The reason why Maia possessed such an attitude towards Lily was due to an incident that occurred soon after they entered school.
In addition to coming from a prominent family, Maia was treated as an idol for her skill with swords.
And she herself took it for granted that she was born as the eldest daughter of the Jarvis family.
She would use various methods in order to punish those who stood up to her or refused to lower themselves in front of her.
It was at the point that Maia had reached to the extremities of arrogance that Lily, a commoner student arrived.
Thinking that she could ‘discipline’ a commoner, who had arrived without displaying any respect for Maia’s status,
she chose to challenge her in swordsmanship class.
The commoners were always subject to brutal oppression from nobles, who were raised in a richer
and more prominent environment than theirs.
While everyone, including herself, thought that she would beat Lily, the future defied their expectations and what occurred was a
brutal defeat that would be lodged in Maia’s memory.
Not long after the showdown, Maia lost her reputation, and the students hailed Lily as a model student and class idol instead, the
noble’s previously surrounding her and hailing her with praises now became part of Lily’s entourage.
Months flew by, and Lily’s reputation slowly grew with time.
Fuelled by her burning hatred and a sense of jealousy, Maia decided to steal all that belonged to Lily.
As a start, she chose Frey, a teacher with a commoner’s background, a subject of Lily’s admiration.
The plot was easily accomplished, as Maia’s teacher and her fiance, Arius, also had the same goal in mind.
Without any prior warning, Frey Garnett disappeared from the academy as well as the city, leaving a wound in Lily’s heart.
But despite that, Maia’s desires were not satisfied.
It would have been easy to plot and expel Lily from the academy, just like Frey, but she chose not to do so.
Instead, trying to make Lily kneel in defeat before her, aiming to regain her lost pride.
With those thoughts in minds, Maia faced Lily.
And, Lily faced Maia, knowing that she could never lose in order to keep her promise with her sensei.
The battle that would occur was a mock battle with a three-vs-three format.
It would be a mock battle with simple rules:
if a single hit is received on the head or torso, the person is eliminated.
or the team loses its means of attack, and is unable to fight back, their loss would be declared..
「Err……then the mock battle between the Arius and Atora teams will begin. Both sides please be careful.」
As the teacher declared, Lily firmly planted her feet on the ground while Maia lightly bowed her head for a moment.
The other students in the line couldn’t hide their excitement
as they became spectators to a battle between the 2 strongest students in the school.
「Begin!」
The start of the match was declared.
It was the three members of Maia’s squad who took the initiative.
They split up in a prearranged manner to create a three one-on-one battles, and Maia took on Lily, preventing her from intervening in the battle of
the other 2 students.
And as the rules stated, the two of Lily’s squad members were rendered incapable of fighting as soon as their weapons were flung from their hands when the signal was given.
Of course, it wasn’t due to a lack in ability, but rather because Maia had told them that they would be rewarded if they abandoned Lily.
For Maia, victory was not something she would achieve after a fair match.
It was a simple way to make her opponent kneel before her,
the integrity of the battle meaning nothing to her, who was willing to do so by any means possible.
「Ara ara, your teammates are already defeated.」
While crossing swords, Maia called out to Lily.
Then she noticed that Lily’s swords strength didn’t have the weight and sharpness of their previous encounter and pushed further
Whether she was getting stronger or the heartbroken Lily was getting weaker, it didn’t matter to Maia either way.
All she could think of was having the opportunity to beat this detestable woman and have her kneel.
「Kuu….!」
(TN: くっ……!)
Once Maia’s attack was parried, Lily took the chance to gain a large distance, proceeding to move backwards.
「Ara, this a first for someone like Lily would decide to back away. But…..it’s all over now…..」
Maia slowly approached Lily, flicking her purple hair gracefully.
Then, the other 2 members joint in, stacking the odds against Lily’s favour.
Everyone watching thought it was over, that all that was left to be seen was
the execution of a grudge borne by a hateful woman.
However, the thoughts in Lily’s mind during such a predicament were regarding victory, nor regarding a slot in the tournament,
much less about Maia. All she thought was:
Sensei.
Sensei.
Sensei.
Sensei, Sensei, Sensei, Sensei, Sensei, Sensei, Sensei, Sensei, Sensei, Sensei, Sensei, Sensei.
Sensei, Sensei, Sensei, Sensei, Sensei, Sensei, Sensei, Sensei, Sensei, Sensei, Sensei, Sensei
Sensei, Sensei, Sensei, Sensei, Sensei, Sensei, Sensei, Sensei, Sensei, Sensei, Sensei, Sensei
(TN: this goes on for about another idk 25 to 50 times)
Where is sensei now, what is he doing, is he safe, what is he thinking, is he taking care of himself?
That was all that occurred in Lily’s mind.
The farther away they were from each other, the longer they couldn’t see each other, the louder those thoughts became.
As Lily touched the hairpiece she was given at that time, she ruminated on the words she was given.
‘If you keep following my teachings, I’m sure we will see each other again.’
And then, holding the sword in front of her eyes again, she faced the three disturbances..
「Pff….ahaha! You’re still trying? That’s too presumptuous of you!」
The three of them, confident of their victory, slowly approached Lily, eventually surrounding her.
All that was left was to take their time to slowly brutalise her.
While thinking about this, Maia took one step and then another, then another and another and another, all in a manner like she was walking up the stairway to heaven.
Lily took a deep breath.
And at that moment when the distance between the two of them has reached approximately two meters–
*FLASH*
Lily appeared behind the 3 disturbances, after-images left by her sword still remaining in front of those 3.
The sound of Lily sheathing her mock battle sword echoed in the silent schoolyard.
With that, the two students who had been standing behind Maia collapsed on the spot as if a puppet’s string being cut.
「Eh? Wha-what….just….happened….」
Unable to comprehend Lily’s sudden disappearance from her vision,
Maia gawked her head once from side to side, and the next thing that struck her was an intense pain in her abdomen.
Unable to bear it, Maia collapsed on her knees.
「Wasn’t that effective?」
Lily said to the male teacher, who was staring at the situation in amazement with his eyes and mouth wide open.
「Eh, err-……we have a winner! ……Atora squad wins! Le-Le-Let’s move onto the next set….. Somebody! Take them to the infirmary!」
The three members of Arius Squad, two of them completely unconscious and one lying on the ground slumped, in a fetal position.
Even Maia, who had managed to remain conscious, was on her knees on the ground, in agony from the intense pain caused by being hit in the abdomen with a chunk of metal,
even though it was a mock battle sword with magical protection.
Lily walked past Maia, who lay sprawled on the ground, and walked back to her original position
「Th-this….is….not…..the end…..」
Unable to properly think of words due to the pain, she lay on the ground, looking up to Lily as she gracefully walked away after her victory.
Seeing that figure, laughter with a mixture of ridicule and sympathy leaked out from the students in line as well.
「You say she’s a master swordsman, but the Jarvis family isn’t a big deal as I thought.」
「No, no, no that was just too bad for them since their opponent was stronger……」
「But look at that disgusting figure, I’m in a good mood now.」
「Haa~…… Lily is so wonderful ……. I wonder if I could somehow get my son-in-law to adopt her……」
「Your son in law…..that’s impossible.」
And without giving Maia a second glance, Lily bowed to the male teacher and walked back into the line.
