- Chapter 21 - The two princes and the two knight orders
The two princes and the two knight orders
We exchanged greetings once more, the first prince and I.
When we looked up at one another, Prince Gerald in his knight’s uniform looked back at my brother beside him.
”I see. She’s a smart younger sister like you said, Graham.”
”Yeah. But this child’s true worth is in her skill with magic tools. Her talent and her passion, and then her capability to conceive an idea and materialise it… I believe Leticia has what it takes to rival the founder Ethan Ainsworth.”
Brother Graham looks at me with a glint in his eyes as he starts boasting in some way about the younger sister he’s proud of.
”Wai-, Onii-sama?!”
He’s obviously praising me too highly.
What has he been telling the prince, this brother of mine???
”Fufu. Graham says these kinds of things, but what about the Count of Owleyes?”
Fishing for a response from my father, father shakes his head.
”That’s incorrect, Your Highness.”
Otou-sama squinted his eyes with a huff.
B-, by any chance, is this———
”Otou-sama, sto-”
”Leticia, is someone who [surpasses] the founder Ethan Ainsworth, a [prodigy] of a magic-toolmaker.”
My father asserted so with a straight face.
”(Pfft)”
The prince made some kind of strange noise.
”——th-, the Count of Owleyes also appears to have quite the praise for the young lady.”
Saying so, Prince Gerald grinned at me.
”Ha, haha…”
Blood rushes to my face in shame.
At that moment, the prince came closer and whispered in my ear.
”Your family loves you, Leticia-sama.”
His Highness chuckled.
(Heeeeeeeeeeeeey!?)[1]
As this was far too much for me, I covered my face with my hands.”
”Actually, I heard this story the other day from my friends who participated in the Count Family’s magic tool unveiling. According to them, [it was a projectile weapon with absurd might], is what they said.”
Saying so, the prince looks to Brother Graham with a glint in his eye.
My brother who received that eye signal nodded his head in response.
”And so today I asked of His Majesty, if we could get approval to include all the knights in the inspection. But then, Alvi… no, the First Knight Order responded with their intentions to decline the inspection.”
His Highness Gerald let out a small sigh.
I fumbled around my recollection of the knight order.
”The First Knight Order is, if I’m not mistaken, has many members from the old noble families, and are decora… are a proud knight order for corteges and parades, right?”[2]
””(Pfft)””
The three men burst out laughing.
(“Hey, Letty!”)
Brother Graham rebuked me in a whisper.
”Huh, was it not?”
I played dumb.
The First Knight Order is, in short, a knight order composed of the children of the Royalist Faction.
It sounds good to say that they respect tradition, but they’re pretty much a decorative knight order with no actual combat experience, and are only obsessed with their outward appearance.
By the way, in the previous life, the place that the second prince belonged to, as well as received swordsmanship training, was also the First Knight Order.
Other than working as Kingsguard and the royal castle’s guard, they lead the ceremonial corteges at parades, and, rather than fighting, their main duty is security at events.
On the other hand, Brother Graham and His Highness Gerald belong to the Second Knight Order, which is an actual fighting force deployed to international border disputes with the surrounding countries, as well as going to deal with things like monsters within the country and bandits.
When it comes to who belongs here, there are many people from the new noble families, but, if one is good enough, their doors are also open to commoners.
Like this, the duties, and also the character, of each of the two knight orders differ.
In the previous life, the ones who arrested myself and Otou-sama, as well as the servants, while using unnecessary violence, were the knights of the First Knight Order.
Since I have these memories, I could never have favourable feelings towards [them].
”Well, they have various reasons[3], you know. Don’t speak so ill of them, Ojou-san.”
As I was recalling unpleasant things, His Highness Gerald smiled.
”I said something awkward to hear. I apologise, Your Highness.”
In response to His Highness’s mature reaction, I apologised.
”That said, His Highness the second prince Alvin is not here today, is he?”
”——— w-, well, I wonder?”
The first prince’s eyes were swimming in their sockets.
No, but it was His Highness who blurted it out earlier.
”To be honest, it’d save me trouble too if I didn’t have to worry about that one.”[4]
”Huh.”
With great interest, he came and peered at my face.
”Seems you’ve got something on your mind.”
”No, not particularly.”
When I shrugged my shoulders, His Highness Gerald laughed and said,
”Well, let’s leave that kind of stuff behind us.——— Now then. I’m also seriously look forward to today’s demonstration. I’ll be cheering you on along with Graham and our friends, so do your best!”
When the first prince shouted that out to me, he took Brother Graham along with him, and returned to where the practising knights were.
☆
After parting with the prince and my brother.
My father and I went down to the training ground together, and checked on the audience spot and the firing location, as well as the target and such.
The distance from the firing location to the target, was roughly 30 metres at teh unveiling the other day.
However, for today’s targets, we have 5 worn-out magic armours and magic shields respectively.
Though I say they’re used goods, they are still in a usable state, and the armour was stuffed with straw.
Moreover, they’re lined up in a single line, [shield, armour, shield, armour…], with one behind the other———
”How far we can shoot through these things, was it?”
To my words, my father nodded.
”Most likely, it seems that’s what the participants at the unveiling the other day suggested. After that, they seem to want to measure [how effective it would be against enemies in a formation in an actual fight].”
”Ah, so that was their intention, huh. I see. As expected of Otou-sama.”
Saying so while smiling, in order to hide his embarrassment, my father cleared his throat and said,
”What, it’s just what the juniors of the oldies think. It’s just a matter of [if it were me, that’s what I’d do], Letty.”
Though he was trying to keep up appearances, the corners of his mouth were slightly turned up.
It was as we were having a pleasant chat like that, that it happened.[5]
——— chi-ring chi-ring, chi-ring chi-ring.
The sound of bells rang around us.
Turning around, I saw the chamberlain that guided us earlier, ringing a handbell from above the stands.
Once all those in the training grounds that noticed it had gathered, he raised his voice.
”His Majesty shall arrive shortly! Prepare yourselves!!”
Hearing the announcement, the knights of the Second Knight Order briskly began tidying up.
”Now, let’s go, Letty.”
”Yes, Otou-sama!”
I gave a big nod to my father’s words, and headed to the audience spot.
TL Notes:
[1]Not sure what should’ve fit here. The author didn’t choose the best words either ↩
[2]a cortege is basically the quiet marching, while the parades would be the marching with fanfare and such I guess. ↩
[3]I previously thought this might’ve been “they do various things”, but who knows? JP isn’t the most explicit language out there. ↩
[4]by the flow of the story, I assume this is Leticia speaking here ↩
[5]I kind of need a better way of translating sentences ending in “だった”. This really doesn’t flow well. ↩
