Magic Maker – How to make magic in another world –
Chapter 61 That’s what i want to do
I turned twelve.
While sensing the familiar smells of medicines and alcohol, I concentrated.
Alfonse Clinic.
A place I visit every day, where I’ve already become acquainted with Mr. and Mrs. Fal. Mr. Bruno has been suffering from a mild form of Lazy syndrome than Kakuya for over a year since he was brought to Dr. Alfonse clinic.
Every time, I administer magical treatment.
Mrs. Camilla, his wife, is watching from behind as usual.
After finishing the magical supply for a while, Mr. Bruno blinked several times and showed a slight smile.
He moved his gaze towards me, and a light of will lit up.
Mr. Bruno’s fingers touched mine.
He probably wants to say something, but he can’t speak, so I don’t understand.
I gently held Mr. Bruno’s hand and stood up.
I felt dizzy and lost balance, but I managed to adjust my posture.
Camilla hurried to support me, but I raised my right hand to stop her.
“It’s, it’s okay.”
I took a deep breath and composed myself.
I used quite a bit of magic.
Sensually, but if I release magic once, it’s about 90.
If I continue this about a hundred times, I get dizzy, and in the next few times, the magic runs out.
My magic amount is about ‘ten thousand.’
For treating Lazy syndrome, even if I spend ten thousand magic, the changes are minimal.
To maintain a good condition, I have to keep supplying magic, but either because the magic amount is insufficient, or for some other reason, it gradually returns to a lazy syndrome state.
Still, I continue to supply magic in the hope that it might have a positive effect on the patient’s body, that there might be invisible changes, or that continued efforts might lead to new discoveries.
With the will of Mrs. Camilla, I continue every day.
“Is… Is everything okay?! Shion-sensei!”
“P-Please stop calling me ‘sensei’… I’m just a kid, you know.”
Mrs. Camilla is about the same age as my mother. It makes me uncomfortable to be called ‘sensei’ by such a woman.
“You are a sensei to us. Thanks to you, my husband has gotten better. I can’t thank you enough… Other doctors, except for Dr. Alfonse, demanded exorbitant fees and couldn’t provide any treatment at all… And Sion-sensei has been so caring, treating my husband. Moreover, for free… Every single day. No other doctor has gone this far.”
Camilla was shedding tears. Seeing her like that, I feel my own powerlessness.
My treatment is still very experimental, and my main goal is to cure my sister. And yet, there’s no way I could accept any payment.
“But the treatment hasn’t led to recovery. It’s my lack of ability. I’m sorry…”
“Even so! You’ve been so kind! My husband surely appreciates it. Even if he doesn’t get better, that won’t change!”
Whether I visit every day, provide treatment, or empathize, it’s meaningless if I can’t cure them. All I can do is wear a bitter expression with an apology.
“Sensei, please don’t worry. We’re already… more than satisfied. Both my husband and I are content. You’ve done enough, and our hearts are saved.”
It’s meaningless if you can’t help.
Even though I’m not a doctor, I’ve come to understand the difficulty and fear of saving someone over this year-long period.
It’s not easy.
Initially, it was to save my sister.
But through interactions with various people, I started to have the desire to save everyone.
Yet, here I am, unable to do anything.
I bow and leave the patient’s room, heading towards the entrance of the clinic.
“Shion.”
I pass by Cole in the hallway.
He’s grown a bit in the nearly two years.
His height has increased, and his facial features have become more refined.
Around seventeen or eighteen, it’s only natural.
The white coat suits him better than before, exuding a certain dignity as a physician.
“You look pale. Are you getting enough rest? Don’t push yourself too hard.”
“I’m resting. I take breaks and eat. I’m just tired from using too much magic, so I’ll be fine.”
Indeed. I’m not pushing myself to extremes, nor am I being pushed.
There’s a sense of impatience. After all, it’s been over five hundred days without any progress in treatment.
I always have the constant desire to cure my sister and the patients quickly.
The number of lazy syndrome patients isn’t increasing much, and fortunately, there haven’t been sudden changes in patients.
But that’s just maintaining the current situation.
I think about countermeasures and try to come up with a solution.
Hearing my words, Cole sighs.
“Don’t carry it all on your own. You’re doing well.
Don’t worry about other doctors or nurses. They’re incompetent, but they have high pride.”
“Why are you suddenly saying this? It’s gross.”
“Gross? What’s gross about it? I’m just worried about you, damn it!”
Cole is awkward, and his language is rough.
But I think it’s a manifestation of his honest and serious personality.
He’s strict with both himself and others.
But more than that, he’s kind. That’s why he extends a helping hand and encourages those who are weak or making an effort.
In this year or so, I’ve come to understand Cole to some extent.
There aren’t many opportunities to act together like before.
“Haha, thanks. I’ll be fine, so don’t worry.”
“If you can say that, then maybe it’s not a lie.
Anyway, take a break once in a while. You come for consultations every day and seem obsessed with lazy syndrome.
Listen up. Go straight home today and get some rest! Eat a meal! Got it!?”
“Got it. I’ll do that.”
Cole seems like he still has more to say, but he’s called by a nurse and enters the patient’s room.
I leave the clinic.
Passing through the crowded street, I head to Glast’s house.
I’ve been relying on him for quite a long time.
He frequently visits me, and I feel bad about it.
He says, “Stay as long as you want! In fact, that way I can repay the favor!” I appreciate it.
I feel like he repaid the debt more than enough.
The town is lively.
There’s no sign of the wraith, and the extermination of surrounding monsters has stabilized.
The number of vagrants has decreased, and there are fewer people developing lazy syndrome.
It’s peaceful.
On the surface.
In any world or society, there are people who are suffering.
For those living day by day, struggling with their own lives, there’s no room to worry about those who are suffering.
So, I don’t blame them; it’s only natural.
With heavy steps, I continue walking and reach Glast’s house.
There’s a familiar face in front of the entrance.
“You look pale, Shion. Are you okay?”
“Hey…”
“Yeah, Rafina, Brigit.”
Rafina, displaying her supple figure, exudes an adult charm. With her originally well-defined features and a good figure, she attracts attention. However, her personality is a bit of a goofball. She’s a knight enthusiast.
On the other hand, Brigit remains unchanged. Her growth seems to have come to a halt. In a sense, people might envy her, but she doesn’t seem to find it desirable.
Holding a book in one hand, she stands as expressionless as ever.
“What’s wrong?”
“Nothing, just thought I’d drop by between tasks. Honestly, I’m swamped with work! Can’t be helped!”
“The 75th Royal Guard Knights… only deal with cleaning and odd jobs… it’s so boring… so, She often come to Shion’s place… just to kill time while saying it’s an escort mission…”
“W-what are you saying, Brigit?! Don’t say weird things!”
Her flustered reaction was evidence that it hit the mark. Brigit and I sent her lukewarm glances.
“Guh! St-stop giving me those looks! Th-that aside! What about you, Brigit? Isn’t the scholar busy!?”
“…Recently, the ecology of monsters has changed, and various pieces of information are crossing over… It was busy sorting all that out… So, I came to check on Shion…”
It seems both of them came to see me, expressing their concern. I smiled wryly, unable to come up with a response.
“Cole mentioned it too, but I’m fine.”
“But, Shion… You’ve been dedicating your time to researching treatment for almost two years. Despite that, there’s still no progress in the treatment?”
“Treating a rare disease… it’s not something that can be done easily. It’s better not to get too worked up…”
I feel their concern. My heart warms, and I couldn’t help but let out a smile.
“Thank you, both of you. I really am okay.”
“I-I see… if Shion says so, then we won’t say anything anymore.”
“Yeah, thanks. Feel free to come inside if you’d like.”
“Very well. We’ll intrude then.”
“Sure…”
Entering the house with the two of them, we head from the shop area to the living room.
“Oh, Shion. You’re back.”
“Hey! I’m in the way!”
“Welcome back, Shion-kun!”
“Shion-kung, welcome home!”
Maron, Red, Rose, and my mother welcomed me. I sense a bow behind me.
Rafina, Brigit, Maron, Red, Rose, and my mother have acquaintanceship. It’s only a casual relationship.
Rose and the others have grown taller, and you can sense the growth of the boys and girls. By the way, I think I’ve grown about 5 centimeters. I’m around 145 centimeters now. It’s not tall, but I’m still in my growing period, so I’ll grow more. Yeah.
“I came to see Marie and Shion, but your complexion looks pale. Are you resting properly?”
“I brought some crops since they’ve been harvested. They’re packed with nutrients, so eat up and regain your energy!”
“We have lots of gifts from the villagers too!”
The kindness from the three was evident. They showed concern for us and brightened our surroundings. There were occasions when acquaintances from the Adventurer’s Guild and villagers also came to visit, treating us with similar kindness. I was blessed, surrounded by good people, and felt happy.
As we chatted, someone entered from the entrance. It seemed to be my father and Glast.
“Oh, you arrived early.”
“Yeah, I left home early today. I met Glast on the way, so we came together.”
“Hey. I’ll be intruding, even though it’s my house!”
“Shut up, Glast.”
Father and Glast glared at each other. Others exchanged greetings and engaged in conversation. The atmosphere was lively indoors. Everyone considered each other and took actions.
How wonderful it would be if my sister were here. That thought couldn’t be helped. I looked at everyone and smiled sadly, and then everyone’s gaze turned towards me.
“Shion, how about taking a short break?”
“Well, I’m not particularly tired. It’s just that my magical energy is running low.”
“No, I’m not talking about today. I’m concerned about what lies ahead. I talked to your mother. At this rate, you’ll collapse before curing Marie. Shion, you’re still a child. You don’t have to carry this burden alone, and it’s okay to express your vulnerability. If it’s too much, you can give up. You’ve done enough. No one will blame you. So, you can take a break now.”
Father’s words echoed in the room. Everyone frowned, and it seemed they were filled with frustration. I knew they were worried about me. They had always been concerned.
“For a long time, you’ve worked hard. Achieving results, putting in effort, spending time, and facing hardships. It’s more than enough. You’ve been doing it for so long. You don’t have to do this anymore.”
“That’s right, Shion-kun. It’s okay now. You don’t have to push yourself anymore.”
Father and mother touched my shoulders in a comforting manner. I looked around at everyone’s faces.
“…Does everyone feel that way?”
No one said anything. Their faces, however, indicated agreement. Father and mother embraced me—strongly and warmly.
“It must have been tough. I’m sorry. We relied too much on Shion. You don’t have to endure it anymore. You don’t have to carry everything by yourself!”
A voice, as if suppressing emotions, echoed. I gently distanced myself, feeling the warmth of the two. As I suspected, that’s how it was. Everyone felt that way. So, I had to say it too.
“No, it’s not tough at all.”
When I said that, everyone present looked at me with expressions of not understanding what was being said.
“W-What do you mean? Are you still enduring it?”
“Shion-kun… You don’t have to be considerate anymore.”
“It’s not tough at all, really. Not tough at all.”
Oh, just as I expected. I somehow knew it, but I couldn’t bring myself to say it. Every time they told me, “Are you okay?” or “Take a break,” or “You don’t have to burden yourself,” I always replied that I was okay. I was resting properly, not pushing myself too hard. But sometimes my magical energy depleted, or I got tired from concentrating too much, or dark circles appeared under my eyes. Seeing that, everyone worried. They cared for me excessively because they were all kind people. With time, the idea that I was pushing myself too hard became a natural assumption among them. Even though it was not the case at all.
“I do want to cure my sister as soon as possible. I think about it every day. But you know, rushing won’t bring results, and even if there are no results, rushing won’t help. I understand that much, and I know that taking proper breaks is important. If I were to collapse or anything, it would only make everyone worry more.”
“But, you’ve been researching and treating for a long time. Isn’t it becoming quite a burden?”
“No, no, Dad. Just think about it. I’ve been studying magic all this time, you know? Even when I didn’t know if it would work or not, I researched, discovered, and developed it. Certainly, I don’t know if it can cure lazy Syndrome. But compared to creating magic from scratch, there’s no hardship or burden. I intend to continue my research for my entire life, for the sake of helping my sister and those with Lazy Syndrome. It’s not a burden or anything. ‘It’s what I want to do.'”
It’s true. There’s pressure, there’s impatience. But I’m not enduring anything, and I don’t find it difficult. I’ve never thought about quitting. Everyone present had a stunned look on their faces. A strong sense of bewilderment filled the room.
“I see, is that so? Sorry, Shion. We misunderstood on our own.”
“I’m sorry, Shion-kun. I said something unnecessary.”
“It’s not unnecessary at all. I know that everyone is worried about me. So, I’m happy. I think I’m a fortunate person. Really, I do. But you know, it’s okay. I’m not enduring anything. So, everyone, don’t worry. Be at ease. I will save my sister.”
There is no basis.
The clear path to treatment has not yet emerged.
But I’m sure I can do it. I believe I can definitely do it.
Doubting oneself, belittling oneself, one cannot save anyone.
Having confidence and the strength of will to keep moving forward.
I know that’s what it takes to achieve something.
Because I’m the one who created magic, I understand.
I won’t give up.
I won’t run away.
I will continue to live like this.
Everyone is watching me. Their gazes reveal various emotions.
I can’t understand everything, but I think most of it was probably astonishment.
In the midst of that, my dad and mom embraced me again.
“You’re an amazing son to us.”
“Thank you for coming to us, Shion-kun.”
“That’s a bit too much. I’d like to hear those words after I’ve cured everyone.”
I smiled wryly and gently stroked their backs.
