Chapter 6 Magic research analysis 1
Clatter, clatter, gulp, gulp.
The sound of utensils scraping echoed in the living room.
“Haguh, haguh!”
“Gafu! Mogumogu!”
“Oh my…”
My sister Marie and I were engrossed in our meal.
Eating bread and quickly washing it down with water.
As we finished our meals simultaneously, we placed our cups on the table.
“Thank you for the meal!”
“Thank you for the meal!”
Leaving our astonished mother behind, we stood up from our chairs.
“Let’s go, sis!”
“Yeah!”
We hurried to leave the room, but just before doing so, we remembered and took the dishes to the sink.
“Hehe, you’re a good boy.”
“Alright, we’re heading out!”
“Yes, have a safe trip!”
Turning away from our smiling mother, Marie and I left the living room.
We hurried through the hallway and headed to the warehouse in the backyard.
Carrying three buckets and fishing rods, we left through the main gate.
In our bag were towels, bait for fishing, and other necessary supplies.
We ran towards the lake.
Upon arrival, we set down the buckets.
“Haa, haa… It’s… tough.”
“Come on! Shion, you’re so lazy! That’s why you have no stamina, you hardly exercise!”
“I… I don’t even have a good comeback…”
It seems the consequences of lazing around for so long have caught up to me.
I’ll try to move my body a little more from now on.
“So, what’s next? We still have a lot of time until evening. What do you want to do?”
“I want to investigate the lake. First, I want to know where those light orbs are coming from.”
“The source? Isn’t it coming from the lake?”
“That’s possible, or maybe it’s from the lake’s creatures. We need to investigate properly to understand the true identity of those orbs.”
“Hmm, I don’t really get it, but if Shion says so, I guess it’s true! So, what do we start with?”
“Okay, first, let’s put lake water in these three buckets. Then, I plan to put sand and rocks, seaweed, and fish in each of them.”
“Alright, got it. I don’t really understand, but I get what we need to do! Let me go get some seaweed for you!”
Marie immediately started to undress. Her belly button was revealed, and in a rush, I stopped my sister’s impulsive action.
“W-What are you doing?”
“What do you mean? If I don’t undress, I’ll get wet, right? The seaweed is likely at the bottom of the lake.”
“T-That’s true, but you don’t need to undress! I’ll go get it!”
“Shion? Can you swim?”
In Japan, I could swim. Just an average level, though. But I rarely went outside, so I never swam in this body.
“I think I can manage. As you’re a girl, you shouldn’t expose your skin in public.”
“Is that so? But, there’s only you, Shion…”
“Even so, it’s not okay! Anyway, I’ll do this, so, Marie, please handle the sand, rocks, and fishing.”
“Mmm, fine, I get it. There’s no need to make such a scary face.”
Marie pouted but adjusted her clothes.
She’s wearing a slightly thick one-piece dress.
Since she moves a lot, her underwear is often visible.
She’s my real sister, so I don’t think much about it. Besides, she’s just a kid.
I quickly undressed and was in my underwear.
In this world, underwear looks somewhat modern, similar to today’s appearance.
However, the materials and quality are significantly inferior.
My sister glanced at me occasionally, but I shouldn’t mind.
I entered the lake. When it reached my waist, I submerged my face in the water.
I couldn’t see clearly, but I could spot some green things relatively nearby.
I grabbed several seaweed with their roots and put them in the bucket. After wiping my body and dressing up, I placed sand and rocks in one bucket with lake water, sand and seaweed in another with sand and water, and the third one had only water.
“The fish aren’t biting very easily…”
A simple fishing rod with a distorted fishing hook hung from the end of a thick branch.
I’m using such a basic fishing rod and some bait resembling earthworms.
I think it should attract freshwater fish, but they don’t seem to be biting.
It’s a good thing we came early.
I sat next to my sister and looked out over the water.
At this time, the light orbs are not visible.
I’m curious about what this signifies, but I still don’t understand.
However, I don’t feel a sense of lethargy right now.
Thanks to my sister.
Because she told me about this place, I am who I am now.
And I also understood how much she cares about me.
Even if the phenomenon in the lake turns out to be just a curious event completely unrelated to magic, I’ll be fine.
Even if it’s dull, I won’t be unhappy.
I’ve learned the importance of having family around.
“W-What’s with that grin?”
“I just thought how lucky I am to have you, sis.”
“W-Wha-what are you talking about! Th-that’s obvious! I-Im my big sister. Of course!”
Her face turned bright red in an instant.
So obvious. But that honesty was endearing.
Though she’s younger, Marie is my older sister.
I realized that painfully well.
“Thank you, sis, for going along with something like this.”
“…I’m free, and besides, if it’s something you want to do, then it’s only natural to join you.
And, you know, if there’s something like magic, I’d like to see it too.
It’s kind of exciting, isn’t it?”
“Hehe, yeah, I think so too. That’s why… I’m here.”
It not only meant in front of the lake but also in a different world.
But my sister doesn’t know that.
I… should stop thinking about it. It’s not something to talk about, and nobody would be happy even if I did.
No one would believe such a ridiculous story.
Even if I spoke, it would be incredibly difficult to reconcile.
“I hope there’s magic.”
“If it exists, I’ll show it to you first.”
“Hehe, promise.”
“Yeah, promise.”
I shared a laugh with my sister.
It was a happy time. Even without magic, I realized I have a family.
“Ah, here it is!”
My sister stood up and pulled the fishing rod firmly.
Gradually stepping back, something shot up from the water.
“There we go! It’s a Cutthroat Trout!”
With a beaming smile, Marie took the lively fish, removed the hook, and put it in the bucket.
“Is a Cutthroat Trout a common fish?”
“Yes, it’s a common freshwater fish you can find anywhere.”
“Anywhere, huh…”
If that’s the case, then it might not be related to the source of the light orbs.
I can’t imagine such a phenomenon happening everywhere.
If it does exist, our parents would know about it.
But they didn’t see it, and even when Marie tried to explain, they seemed puzzled.
So, it’s still highly likely that this is a phenomenon unique to this lake.
And the Cutthroat Trout may not be the cause, increasing the possibility.
“What should we do? Catch a few more?”
“Yeah, let’s do that. Will you continue?”
“Yes, I will. Let’s keep at it.”
I sat next to my sister, chatting and laughing.
Unfortunately, we didn’t catch any fish, and it was approaching evening.
As a precaution, we stopped fishing not to disturb the phenomenon and waited.
In the evening, the orbs of light floated up again from the lake and ascended into the sky.
It seemed like this phenomenon occurred every day. We would need to observe it throughout the year to understand more.
Could it be a temporary phenomenon occurring under certain conditions like seasons, environment, or something else?
“Let’s check the buckets.”
I suggested, looking at the buckets.
None of them were glowing.
“They’re not glowing.”
“…I tried to recreate the conditions as much as possible, similar to those in the lake.”
So, could it be another fish besides the Cutthroat Trout or some other substance or creature near the lake that is the source?
While contemplating, I asked my sister, “Apart from the Cutthroat Trout, are there other fish in this lake?”
“There might be many. It’s quite difficult to gather them all.”
That makes sense. It’s not easy to cover all the creatures living in a single lake.
Alright then, time to dive in.
I undressed again and approached the lake.
“That, it might be dangerous!”
“It’s okay. Probably.”
“I-it might not be okay, you know!”
“I told you! But, enough! I’m going too!”
Before I could say anything, Marie discarded her clothes.
In a camisole and drawers. Basically underwear.
It was on the less exposed side.
“Hey, sis, once you undress…”
“I told you it’s not allowed! But I don’t want to leave Shion alone!”
Marie had a strong determination in her eyes.
In this state, trying to say anything to her would be in vain.
She absolutely wouldn’t change her mind.
I sighed and had no choice but to accept it.
“I got it. Let’s go together.”
“Hehe! You should’ve said that from the beginning.”
She squeezed my hand tightly, and I returned the gesture.
At first, it was embarrassing, but now I had no resistance.
After all, she’s my sister.
The two of us waded into the lake, progressing slowly.
Walking amidst the floating orbs of light was like being in a fantasy.
The exhilaration was overwhelming. I didn’t even know the meaning behind this phenomenon, but I felt like what I had wished for was nearby.
Suddenly, I reached out towards one of the orbs.
“W-wait!”
Before Marie could stop me, I touched the orb of light.
“It’s warm. And a little ticklish, maybe?”
“Huh, not too hot? Are you okay?”
“Yeah. I’m fine. It’s actually kind of pleasant.”
Hearing my words, Marie cautiously touched the orb of light.
Her expression softened.
“It’s really warm. Like a bath.”
The orb of light disappeared when touched.
What on earth could this be?
As we approached the area where the lights were emanating from, I dipped my face into the lake.
I couldn’t tell exactly where they were coming from.
The lake was relatively clear, but not extremely transparent.
There were ripples and bubbles on the water’s surface, making it hard to see underwater.
I gazed at the spot where the light was born.
However, it didn’t emerge from the same spot.
It seemed to be moving slightly.
While I was looking underwater, my sister was also observing the same, and at the same time, she lifted her face.
“Bwah! Haah, that’s not working.”
“Hmm… yeah, it’s hard to see clearly.”
“Yeah. But I figured out one thing.”
“What? What did you figure out?”
“Probably, the orbs of light are emitted by aquatic creatures, possibly fish.
Not plants, but moving creatures, I believe.”
“Why do you think so?”
“Because they’re moving. The positions where the light is born change. But I don’t know which creature exactly.”
“It would be great if we could see better.”
“Yeah… that’s true. Anyway, I guess this is our limit for today. We’ve learned a bit.”
“Really? I don’t quite understand.”
With a questioning look, my sister tilted her head.
When we returned to the lake shore, we dried off and put on our clothes.
“Thanks, sis. You saved me.”
“Forget the thanks! Seriously! We’re family, so we don’t need formalities!”
“I see. But I want to say it. I’m grateful to you, sis.
Even in a family, it’s okay to express what you want to say, right?”
Looking straight at her, my sister averted her gaze looking a bit flustered.
But I could tell she was happy.
Because her profile undoubtedly showed a smile.
“W-Well, yeah, I guess if you put it that way, there’s no helping it, yeah.
A-anyway, let’s go back. What about those buckets?”
“I’ll take the fish home, just to be sure. I want to observe them.”
The seaweed is probably not a factor, so it should be returned to the lake.
“Yeah. Let’s put the others back before we leave.”
We emptied two of the buckets and took the one with the fish back home.
The catch wasn’t much, but there was no trace of disappointment.
Rather, I was excited beyond measure.
It was fun. Since coming to this world, it was the first time I felt this much joy.
It’s not just because I learned about what seems to be the trigger for magic.
It’s also because I have someone to share this time with.
During this time, I vowed to cherish our life together.
