Magic Maker – How to make magic in another world –
Chapter 44 Magic theory
In the courtyard, I combined magical research with training.
My sister went to the nearby forest for a running session.
As I grew older, training in the courtyard became challenging.
So now, I am alone, focusing on magical training.
A few years ago, I wasn’t allowed to train magic alone if my sister or someone else wasn’t nearby.
Now that I’ve turned ten, I’m allowed to conduct research on my own.
Despite my daily efforts in training, progress has been somewhat stagnant lately.
Let’s start with the magic I can use.
The single magics are ‘Flare,’ ‘Bolt,’ ‘Aqua,’ and ‘Blow,’ totaling four.
The special magics are ‘Jump’ and ‘Fall,’ two in total.
Single magics are also known as elemental magics, serving as the foundation.
Special magics are derived from single magics.
Jump allows only short-distance movement, and the direction is not entirely free.
I’d like to fly in the future, but it might be challenging.
Fall creates a pitfall by flowing air to the ground beneath the target.
At the moment, I can only create a depression of a few tens of centimeters.
Next are the composite magics.
Here are the composite magics I can currently use:
-
-
-
- ★ Combustion (Flare + Bolt)
-
-
-
-
-
- ★ Electrified Water (Bolt + Aqua)
-
-
-
-
-
- ★ Waterfall (Aqua + Fall)
-
-
-
-
-
- ★ Jump Boost (Jump + Flare)
-
-
-
-
-
- ★ Aerial Dash (Jump + Bolt)
-
-
-
-
-
- ★ Gust (Jump + Aqua)
-
-
For newly learned or experimental magics, I’ve marked them with a ★ symbol.

So far, that’s about it.
I conducted several experiments utilizing atmospheric magic. These experiments involved the generation of mist, changes in air pressure, and alterations in atmospheric composition.
To cut to the chase, I couldn’t create mist. I thought that if I could solidify atmospheric moisture, I might be able to create mist by vaporizing and partially solidifying it.
Mist is created due to temperature changes, and even with modifications to atmospheric components, I couldn’t induce its formation. What I’m doing involves simple separation and mass changes in the atmosphere itself, as well as pressure adjustments.
As mentioned earlier, changes in air pressure were achievable. Mass changes, meaning giving commands to the air touched by magic to increase or decrease mass, likely resulted in pressure changes.
However, it’s different from a straightforward alteration in atmospheric pressure. The phenomenon touched by magic becomes magic. Magic deviates from the physical laws I’m familiar with, and the laws of this world also have aspects that don’t align with my knowledge.
Assuming too much can be risky, that’s for sure.
Next is the change in atmospheric composition.
This was also impossible, considering the nature of magic.
Magic maintains the limited substances and phenomena it touches as they are and transforms them into magic. While I can ignite fire, changing the nature of fire itself is impossible.
The magic I am currently obsessed with is “Jump.” This magic, unlike others, prioritizes evasion over attack.
Having multiple means of attack is undoubtedly advantageous, but for me, the crucial aspect is how to avoid the opponent’s attacks effectively. With mobility, I can use magic effectively, facing multiple opponents or formidable enemies.
The principle of Jump is simple. Concentrate magic at my feet, envelop it in wind, create high and low pressure within the magic, circulate it to some extent within the magical membrane, amplify the wind force, and release it at will.
It doesn’t require as much time as High Blow or Flare Storm, but still, a certain amount of time is needed. In other words, immediate activation is not possible.
Maintaining this situation for a few seconds, I unleash it at a free moment. Since the wind dances around my feet, it’s challenging to handle, and the wind doesn’t always go in the desired direction. I fail about two out of five times.
Moreover, I can only lift off slightly while standing. It’s meaningless unless I jump or move just before using Jump.
Just listening to this might make it sound unusable, but when used effectively, it’s a perfect magic for evasion. If a regular jump covers three meters, skillful use of Jump can extend the distance by another three meters.
Even if I can only jump about a meter sideways without using Jump, with Jump, I can jump two or three meters. Not only in terms of simple distance, but because of the different initial speed, it can also be utilized for evasion.
However, it has a strong tendency, the timing of the jump is difficult, and I need to be careful about landing.
I sense its potential, though. Every day, I spend time to freely use Jump, following a simple rule of navigating through wooden sticks set up in the courtyard.
I perform this using Jump, sometimes flying in a completely different direction or falling. While I’m better than I was at first, it’s still not at the practical stage.
In the battle with my father, I used it as a last resort, but unless there’s a significant reason, I shouldn’t use it.
“Haa, haa… Moving my body while using magic, the fatigue is incredible…”
Physical fatigue doesn’t occur with the loss of magical power. Continuous use of magic, leading to depletion, makes the body feel heavy, and mentally one becomes lethargic. Unless a significant amount is consumed, one wouldn’t feel a sense of fatigue. However, if you keep moving and continuously using magic, it’s a different story. The physical and mental fatigue becomes stronger, gradually making the body feel heavier. Even if magical power and physical strength remain, there’s a vague tiredness different from usual.
But this is necessary. Magicians need stamina and physical ability. Otherwise, they can’t fight alone. In games or manga, magicians often lack stamina or have low physical ability. Well, that’s like committing suicide. In solo missions, against multiple opponents, or in situations requiring high mobility, they won’t stand a chance. Well, I understand the sentiment though.
Continuing training, covered in sweat, my sister entered from the main gate. It seems her running session has ended. Like me, she’s drenched in sweat, breathing heavily. When she spotted me, she waved her hand, and I waved back.
“Welcome back, sis.”
“I’m home. Phew, I’m tired.”
Even though she says she’s tired, she’s still smiling. It makes my heart skip a beat, if only for a moment. Recently, my sister has become more womanly, somewhere between a girl and a woman. Going through a growth spurt, she looks somewhat like a high school student. I’ve grown too, but I’m still quite small. Well, in terms of age, I’m still upper elementary school, so it can’t be helped.
“How’s your body feeling? Any discomfort?”
“You’re asking that again? I’m fine. Absolutely no issues! I’m actually feeling fantastic.”
My sister proudly puffs out her small chest and smiles. Indeed, she has shown remarkable growth in the past few years, both as a swordsman and physically. But still, it concerns me. There’s a noticeable difference in her growth compared to a regular person, and it’s hard to ignore. Mom and dad are worried, and I am too. However, it doesn’t seem to be a problem for my sister. As she says, she’s perfectly healthy.
In this world, there are magic, fairies, and monsters. Not everything aligns with my common sense. So, my sister’s growth and her current physical abilities might not be entirely unbelievable. However, Dad seems unfamiliar with cases like my sister’s, and it’s still a concern. Well, unlike modern Japan, individual access to information is quite limited here, so it’s hard to make a blanket statement.
I suspect magic might be involved, but it’s just a gut feeling. There could be other reasons, or maybe she simply has talent, or it’s genetic. There are no medical devices in this world, and doctors here usually don’t move unless there’s a significant problem, and they can’t determine symptoms. For now, she’s perfectly healthy, so all we can do is watch over her. If magic or spells are involved, it should affect me too. But I’m just an ordinary person. I don’t have superhero-like physical abilities, and my body is not exceptionally healthy.
“I can kinda guess what Shion is thinking, but there’s nothing wrong with me, you know? I don’t think there’s anything to worry about. Besides, having high physical abilities is a good thing, right? I can fight if needed, and it won’t be like with the goblins before.”
My sister tightens her expression. Even now, it seems that her past memories are etched in her mind. Certainly, we’ve overcome that ordeal. However, it’s not like we’ve forgotten or fully accepted those memories. It’s the same for me. Monsters are terrifying. They are enemies of humans.
“… If anything happens, let me know. Even if it’s something small.”
“Yeah, yeah, I get it. Everyone’s overly cautious, seriously.”
I could understand my sister’s feelings as she sighed in exasperation. But I can’t help but worry. She’s my only sister. It’s only natural to be concerned, I think. I don’t want to be too annoying about it. She might simply be a once-in-a-few-thousand or few-hundred-thousand genius. …Though that doesn’t seem likely.
However, the magical light emanating from my sister’s body remains unchanged. I’ve always seen that aura overflowing from her entire body. I thought there might be some visual change if there were any abnormalities in her magic.
For now, there’s no change at all. Despite a lingering unease, I felt frustrated by my inability to do anything. If things are fine now, it doesn’t mean they’ll be fine forever. But there’s nothing I can do because my sister is perfectly healthy. Am I overthinking this? I had to forcibly convince myself and accept the current situation.
Seeing Marie trying to comfort me, all I could manage was a wry smile.
