Chapter 30 Invisible changes
A pale-faced Glast is standing in front of me.
This is the living room of my house.
As usual, our family is all gathered here.
All four of us are at the table, watching Glast’s condition with concern.
I’m the same.
Several days have passed since the day I invented the Lightning Stone and Thunderlight.
There was no contact, but today, Glast came to visit.
We wanted to ask about the results, but seeing Glast’s expression, we were unsure how to ask.
For now, we invited him into our home and prepared to hear the story.
That’s the current situation.
What on earth happened?
Could it be that he didn’t sell any at all and is in trouble?
If that’s the case, it’s my responsibility.
No one might blame me, but it’s undoubtedly my responsibility.
I suppressed my anxiety and waited for Glast’s words.
And then, with his eyes swimming, Glast trembled his lips.
“――Sold out.”
“Huh?”
I let out an absurd voice in response to the unexpected words.
Sold out?
“That’s good, but then why do you have such a face? You should be more delighted, shouldn’t you?”
Dad’s words are reasonable.
All of us should have felt the same.
But Glast’s demeanor remains unchanged.
“It’s good that it sold. It seems like I placed the products in an acquaintance’s store, and they sold out immediately. The problem is… that… it sold too well.”
“Sold too well?”
“Yeah. It sold in an instant. It seems a customer who found the product in the store spread the word through word of mouth. It sold out quickly, probably because I set the price reasonably. It became very popular, and I was bombarded with questions about who made it and how it was made… Of course, I didn’t tell anyone. And then… I was asked to make more.”
Glast glanced at me for a moment.
Ah, I see what this is about.
“In other words, you came to ask Shion for help?”
The processing of thunderstone itself can be done by anyone.
The issue lies in Flare, or fire magic.
In the refining process of thunderstone, Flare is essential, and without it, the characteristic of electricity generation is lost.
My presence is essential, in other words.
“I, I understand. I don’t intend to ask for the impossible, especially since you’ve already helped me a lot! If Shion doesn’t want to, that’s fine. Let’s just end it. But you know, this situation is quite special. As a merchant, I want to make money when the opportunity arises. Of course, if you help, I’ll pay you. I’ll also come to pick you up, and I’ll even send you from Istria to here by horse! H-How about it?”
Dad looked at me, silently asking what I would do.
Getting a reward is nice. Well, I don’t need money right now, but I’ll probably accept it. Considering the previous favor I asked for, it’s better to create a situation where I’m with Glast to some extent.
As it is now, the only times I can meet Glast are when Dad and I go together to Istria or when Glast comes to the house. That’s inconvenient for various reasons.
However, the drawback is the shortage of time.
Reduced time for magical research and training is a concern. I also want to research synthesis magic. However, considering the future, it might be a good idea to go along with Glast’s proposal. Besides, he’s asking for a favor.
“I’m fine with it.”
“Really!?”
“Yes. However, only up to once every three days. And there might be times when I need a break for my convenience. I’ll let you know in advance. Also, a long-term commitment might be difficult.”
“Oh, oh, that’s fine. More than enough!”
Glast nodded with a delighted expression.
Having a certain level of income at this age is significant. Even if I can’t possess it myself, the fact that I earned it might make it easier to ask Dad for something.
In the end, from today onwards, I’ll be helping.
In the courtyard, I mounted Glast’s horse and turned to my family.
“Listen, Glast. Make sure to get Shion home before it gets too late. It’s fine to stay overnight since going back and forth will be tough.”
“Yeah, sorry about that. I appreciate it. I’ll take good care of him!”
“I doubt it doesn’t matter who’s taking care of whom… Shion, be careful. And don’t do anything reckless on your own, especially when it comes to magic. You tend to go overboard with it.”
“I’ll be fine. Don’t worry.”
“And… Marie. You stay at home.”
Facing my sister, who was eagerly trying to mount Glast’s horse, Dad said with amazement.
“Eeeehhh!? Why!? Why!?”
“No matter what, Shion alone should be enough.”
“But, I’m worried if it’s just Shion! I’m sure I can help in various ways!”
Certainly, having my sister around is reassuring for me. Recently, when my sister is around, I’ve been allowed to conduct magic experiments. However, it’s only for simple ones, and if it involves any danger, Dad has to be present.
So far, I’ve adhered to this agreement. Therefore, it seems that Dad trusts me. However, he doesn’t trust my sister completely. It’s a matter of setting boundaries, and this seems to be the limit he’s comfortable with.
I conduct experiments either in the courtyard or in my room, and I always report to Mom. When going to a distant place where my parents’ eyes can’t reach, it seems those rules don’t apply. Rather, my sister being there might lead to more reckless actions.
There’s a tentative agreement that some experiments are allowed if my sister is present. Dad’s probably considering this. I’ve been following Dad’s instructions and being a good kid. I’m not demanding or troublesome. I’m just pursuing my own path in magic and causing a bit of trouble.
Other than that, I should be normal. So Dad perceives me as a responsible son. Well, maybe responding too much to that trust might not be a good idea.
Probably, things will deviate a bit from that in the future. My sister keeps grumbling. People who consistently express their opinions are indeed commendable. She probably thinks she can get her way if she persists. And it seems effective with Dad.
“I understand. Marie, go along… Don’t cause trouble for Glast. And don’t do anything dangerous. Got it?”
“Eh! Y-Yes, I understand! It’s okay, I’ll take care of Shion!”
With a firm pat on her chest, Marie quickly mounted the horse.
What swift work.
Dad sighed resignedly.
During such times, Mom doesn’t say anything. She just smiles or makes a troubled face in the background. She’s probably supporting Dad as the head of the household.
“Now that the conversation is settled, we should be going. I’ll send you back in the evening.”
“Yeah, I’m counting on you.”
With that, Glast urged the horse forward.
Once we were a bit away from home, I spoke carefully to avoid biting my tongue.
“How about the promised items!?”
“Wait for about a month! I’ve enlisted the help of a skilled tailor, so it’ll take some time! As for the other request, I have something in mind! Can we discuss that later!?”
“Yes! That’s fine!”
Amidst the thunderous sound of hooves, we continued our conversation at a loud volume. My sister clung tightly to me from behind.
“What are you talking about!?”
“I’ll tell you later! It’s going to take a bit!”
“Mmm! Fine, I got it!”
After a few more hours, we arrived in Istria, started processing the thunderstone, went beyond noon, left the shop around 3 PM, and had Glast take me home. With everything going smoothly, Dad seemed relieved.
Afterward, I started working part-time regularly. On the days in between, I devoted time to manipulating magic power.
To use synthesis magic, you need to bring magic power into contact with magic. It would be easier with my sister, but doing it alone would be better. So, I thought about it. When releasing magic power from my right hand, could I release it from another part of my body?
The release from the right hand is 60. The remaining 40 stays within my body. I thought I might be able to release it from another location. The result was that I could do it a little, but it was challenging to concentrate on both hands simultaneously. Gradually, I’m getting better at it. I have various other ideas, and there is a lot of potential in synthesis magic. However, right now, I want to focus on mastering this simultaneous magic power release. The experiments with synthesis magic will come later.
I continued this routine: practicing magic, going to Glast shop a few days later, and training in between. I maintained this lifestyle for a while.
