Magic Maker – How to make magic in another world –
Chapter 29 Synthesis magic
“Now, since I anticipate not receiving any communication for a while, let’s do what we can now. My research is stalling, but there’s something that’s been on my mind. I headed to the central courtyard with a few tools in hand.”
“Well, Shion, what are you up to today?” My sister asked, as she had been practicing her swordsmanship and was sweating slightly, enjoying the refreshing atmosphere. It’s a sight quite far removed from what I’m accustomed to. Wiping the sweat from her brow, my sister came over to me and directed her gaze to the items in my hands.
“A cup and a candle? What are you going to use them for?”
“Well, just watch.”
I placed two candles on a flat rock in the central courtyard. The fire was obtained from a regular fireplace, not a flare. There wasn’t much wind, so the fire flickered but didn’t go out. I placed a cup over one of the candles.
“Fire needs oxygen to burn. So when you enclose it like this, it goes out. You knew that, right?”
“Eh, yes! I-I knew that!”
It was quite evident she didn’t know. Well, aside from the oxygen part, covering something to extinguish it is relatively common knowledge in this world. But for fires, they’re usually put out with water or allowed to burn out naturally. Additionally, regular lamps are often extinguished by blowing on them. While the method of covering a fire is indeed common, you probably wouldn’t see it much in our household.
“So, what’s the significance of this?”
“Well, normal fires are extinguished like this, but I was wondering what happens to magical fires. So, I thought I’d give it a try.”
“Doesn’t it go out?”
“Who knows?”
I generated a flare in my right hand. It had a duration of about three seconds. That should be enough. I immediately placed a cup over the flare and quickly removed the cup.
“Oh, it’s not extinguished.”
That’s right, it didn’t go out. Even though there should be no oxygen. What could this mean? Typically, a regular fire requires an ignition source, oxygen, and a flammable substance. I had previously considered the idea that fire magic used magical energy as a flammable substance.
However, I had assumed that oxygen was still needed. But that was a mistake. Fire magic didn’t require oxygen. This raised questions about the nature of magical energy. I’d previously observed that when magical energy came into contact with something, it could generate an electric current, especially in the context of lightning magic.
This suggested that magical energy was a variable form of energy that could react differently depending on the conditions it encountered, essentially amplifying or maintaining the state of the phenomenon it was interacting with.
In addition, it was clear that oxygen wasn’t required. This indicated that magical energy could sustain the phenomenon itself under a wide range of conditions, even if oxygen or a flammable substance was absent. In other words, magical energy had the capacity to continuously amplify the phenomenon under various circumstances.
However, fire magic could still be extinguished by water. This aspect raised some questions, but it might be related to the fact that it was fire magic. Water was its natural enemy, given the opposing attributes. So, perhaps they canceled each other out? This part remained a bit ambiguous, and I decided to leave it on hold. A flare’s fire had a unique effect on materials and didn’t alter the properties of lightning stone, which was useful. This wasn’t just ordinary fire; that much was clear.
“But now that you know this, what’s the point?”
“I’m not sure yet. I just know it’s different from regular fire. I believe the same applies to lightning magic.”
And then, in that moment, I had an idea. I quickly stood up and moved to the center of the courtyard.
“What’s going on?”
“Sis, I want to try something. You can release magical energy outside your body, right?”
“Yes, I can. My magical energy output is low, and it’s not very stable, though.”
My sister could also use Flare, but her output was considerably lower than mine, and she couldn’t maintain the fire for long. It would extinguish shortly after she released it, so she couldn’t control it properly. I guessed her output was around 20 to 30, compared to my 60. But she was likely better at controlling magical energy. She could manipulate the magical light in her palms more intricately than I could.
“Alright, I’ll fire a Flare over there and hold it in the air. I want you to collide a cluster of magical energy with it. Make sure to shoot from a distance.”
“I don’t mind.”
She agreed, though she looked somewhat puzzled. Flare didn’t require oxygen or a flammable substance, and it was fueled by magical energy. If Flare was already manifesting, what would happen if you added more magical energy to it?.
However, fire magic consumed magical energy for its very existence, and Flare embodied all the necessary elements. So, if we collided magical energy with Flare, could it become even more powerful? That’s what I thought. I fired a Flare into the air, and my sister released magical energy towards it.
Now, we waited to see what would happen. Would it ignite suddenly, increase in firepower, or undergo some unique, color-changing transformation? I waited in anticipation. They collided, and then… a loud bang. An impact and a strong wind hit me. Heat and light filled my field of vision. It happened in an instant. Blue flames burst and created an explosion in the air. There was no doubt about it; it was an explosion.
“Kyaa!”
I heard my sister’s scream. When I quickly looked in her direction, it seemed like she had merely fallen on her rear. I breathed a sigh of relief, but the flames had disappeared entirely in an instant. Because it was an aerial phenomenon, there was no damage to the surroundings.
“W-what was that just now!?”
My sister’s eyes were wide open, and I was also in shock. I never expected something like that to happen. Why did it happen? I had only supplied magical energy. Why did it result in an explosion?
It was challenging to attribute this sudden explosion to the rapid supply of magical energy. That’s because supplying less than half of my magical energy output shouldn’t have significantly increased Flare’s power. That explosion clearly contained a considerable amount of energy just from the magical energy collision. I helped my sister up, pulling her hand and getting her back on her feet.
“Are you okay, sis?”
“Yeah. I was just a bit startled… Did you know this would happen, Shion?”
“No, I had no idea this would be the result. I thought it would just increase the firepower.”
“R-right. But why did it turn out like that? Just from magical energy touching it.”
Just from magical energy touching it.
It exploded just from touching it, like if it were an explosive. Magical energy as an explosive? That couldn’t be, could it? Wait a minute. I believed that magical energy was a variable substance. That was probably correct. However, something about it was bothering me. Magical energy ignited when it touched fire. Magical energy discharged when it touched electricity.
Fire, burning, oxygen, flammable material.
Electricity, flowing, discharge.
Electricity… electricity?
I suddenly realized and quickly approached the thunderstone in the corner of the garden.
“Shion!? What’s wrong?”
My sister hurriedly followed me.
I immediately generated magical energy and made it touch the thunderstone.
Electricity traveled through the magical energy.
The shape of the electrical current resembled “thorns.”
Just like the impression of thunder.
But why did the electrical current take this shape? Thinking about the reason behind it dispelled my doubts.
The electrical current running through magical energy somehow had the same shape as “lightning running through the atmosphere.”
What could this mean?
I looked at the magical energy with conviction.
That’s right.
Magical energy emits light in an extraneous state.
In other words, it might be reacting to the atmosphere.
Is the light amplification due to ultraviolet radiation?
Is it responding to sunlight?
If that were the case, it would make sense for heat to be generated.
However, at that point, it couldn’t be concluded that magical energy was reacting to the atmosphere.
Still, there was clearly air resistance when casting Thunder Magic.
Flare didn’t require oxygen and only combusted using magical energy. In contrast, Thunder Magic had air resistance.
This implies that magical energy might be serving as the role of oxygen, amplifying the phenomenon, possibly setting the stage for the phenomenon of an object.
This alone didn’t confirm that fact.
However, Flare did indeed burn without oxygen, and supplying magical energy that reacted with oxygen to Flare resulted in an explosion.
If magical energy reacts with an object, or in this case, a substance, amplifying its properties, then extraneous magical energy would have plenty of oxygen, amplifying that element.
This extraneous magical energy came into contact with Flare, which is fire. It reacted due to an excessive oxygen supply or a reaction resembling it, causing an explosion.
Magical energy interacts with the atmosphere when released, affecting its properties.
This raises one question: why doesn’t magical energy, which interacts with the atmosphere, explode when it comes into contact with ordinary fire?
The difference in properties between ordinary fire and Flare would likely explain this.
Furthermore, magical energy interacts and reacts with other magical energy.
This is not a mistake, as I know that magical energy reacts when it comes into contact with the Goblins.
In other words, magical energy was amplified by magical energy that interacted with the atmosphere, causing the magic to produce explosive power.
That might have been the cause of the explosion earlier.
“Oh, oh! Th-this might be significant progress!
It’s happening! It’s happening! This is it! Whoo!”
I began to get excited.
A big opportunity had arrived right before me.
This was undoubtedly it.
The chance for a breakthrough had arrived.
“You’re making another strange face… Well, I guess it’s fine since you seem so happy.”
“Sister! Sister! Come over here! Help me!”
“Alright, alright. What should I do?”
“I’m going to use Thunder Magic, so you’ll need to supply magical energy to it over there.”
“…Are you sure it won’t explode again?”
“If my estimation is correct, it won’t! But stand back a bit!”
My excitement got the better of me, making me somewhat unaware of my own actions.
But I couldn’t stop myself.
I created a long magical energy rod and touched the thunderstone with it.
I signaled to my sister, and she touched the tip of the rod with her magical energy.
The electrical current was brief.
However, because my sister’s magical energy had touched it first, I could see the tip clearly.
The electrical current disappeared from the point of contact.
“It disappeared…? I wonder why. Flare exploded, but this one didn’t.”
“Because of air resistance. I think the magical energy that’s in contact with the atmosphere hindered the electric current.
In other words, I’m definitely right!
This magical energy comes into contact with the atmosphere and amplifies air and oxygen like other phenomena!”
“I… don’t really get it.”
“I don’t get it that well either! But the fact that I might understand means something!”
I couldn’t contain my joy and excitement, and I was jumping around.
My sister watched me with a happy expression.
I love moments like these.
In magical research, there can be setbacks, failures, and times when things don’t go well. But occasionally, there’s progress like this.
This feeling is incredibly satisfying and enjoyable. People who engage in research might be unable to stop because they experience this kind of pleasure.
From today, I’ll step into a new realm once again.
By the way, today, our mother is out. That’s why she didn’t come out even when there was an explosion. If she had, it would have been quite a problem.
For now… I’ve decided to name this magic ‘Synthesis Magic’.
