Chapter 2 My sister, father, mother and me
The first six months were tough.
After all, my body wouldn’t move properly, and I couldn’t speak.
I had to be taken care of in every aspect.
There are parts I hate to remember, so please allow me to omit them.
Most of the time, I was asleep.
My job was just staring blankly at the ceiling.
It was boring.
But because I looked forward to the future, it wasn’t painful.
As you grow older, you can do more things.
Then, eventually, I will learn about magic.
Oh, I can’t wait.
I’m looking forward to it so much that I wet myself. I’m sorry, Mom.
“Oh dear, Shion-chan. You had a little accident. Let’s change your diaper, okay?”
A beautiful woman with a gentle smile, my mother, Emma, said this.
My name is Shion. It might sound somewhat feminine, but I am a boy.
Honestly, I struggled to figure out what to call myself in my heart, but there’s no doubt she’s my mother in this world.
I decided to call her Mom or Emma in my mind.
Well, I don’t really call her by name.
Emma changed my ‘diaper’ with a gentle smile.
Oh, when I say ‘diaper,’ it’s like regular underwear.
It seems unavoidable as it’s not good to have it too thick and poorly ventilated, causing discomfort.
After changing my diaper, Emma picked me up.
“Hmm, Shion is a quiet child. Quite different from Marie.”
Emma looked down at me with a bit of worry.
Indeed, I am quiet. I don’t cry much, and I don’t laugh much.
Because, you know, even if you make funny faces and say ‘boo,’ I can’t laugh.
The laughter threshold for a thirty-year-old guy isn’t that low, you know.
Although I put on a polite smile, people around me tend to look at me like, ‘What’s with this guy?’
Because of that, I try not to force myself to smile.
While Emma said ‘there, there,’ she gently rocked me.
The pleasant rocking invited drowsiness, but it was interrupted by a loud sound.
“Mommy!”
The one who opened the door was a little girl.
Although, she’s older than me in my current state.
She’s Mariann. Nickname is Marie. She’s my sister.
She’s three years old and quite a mischievous girl.
Perhaps due to her strong personality, her reddish-orange hair, which reaches her shoulders, is wavy.
She keeps herself relatively tidy, but her movements and gestures ruin it all.
She stomped on the floor and came down to us.
“Oh dear, what’s the matter, Marie?”
“Mommy! I want to carry Shion too!”
I must decline.
If I let you hold me, you’ll definitely drop me.
Even a small height drop is dangerous for a baby.
Please stop, really.
Even our easygoing mother seemed troubled by Marie’s request.
Hey, um, no. Decline, please!
Internally, I watched nervously.
As for Marie, she was tugging on Mom’s skirt, saying, “Hey, hey! Please!”
“I’m sorry, Marie. It might still be too much for you.”
“That’s not true! I can do it!”
You can’t do it!
“Is that so?”
“Yes!”
It’s not like that!
Stop it, seriously!
I don’t want to die before using magic!
Even though I was reincarnated into a different world, dying after being dropped by my sister is the worst outcome, I absolutely hate it!
“Ugh, I’m sorry after all.”
“U-ugh, I’ll, I’ll carry him! Marie will do it!”
Marie started crying. Unable to control her emotions, she tugged at Emma’s skirt.
“St-stop it. It’s dangerous.”
“Nooo! Let me carry him! It’s not fair!”
When a child starts crying, they won’t stop easily.
Children are selfish.
The cries echoed throughout the room.
This is really tough.
Emma, flustered, laid me down on the bed and started talking to Marie.
“Marie, you’re the older sister, you shouldn’t be selfish, okay?”
“It’s not fair, it’s not fair!”
Emma spoke to Marie patiently.
She has amazing patience.
I wouldn’t be able to do that.
After tens of minutes, Marie, who had finally stopped crying, smiled, and Emma chuckled.
“Marie, you wanted to play with Shion, didn’t you?”
“Yeah…”
“In a little while, Shion will be able to talk and move little by little. Can you wait until then? We need to protect the baby, you know. As a family.”
“…As a family?”
“Yes. I want you to help, Marie. Because you’re the older sister and I can rely on you.”
“Because I’m the older sister?”
“That’s right.”
Marie rubbed her eyes and wiped away her tears, then smiled brightly.
“Okay! Marie will endure it! Because I’m the older sister!”
“Hehe, thank you. You truly are a great older sister.”
Emma patted Marie’s head gently.
I witnessed a heartwarming moment, feeling warm inside, even though I am just a baby.
Marie toddled over, and when she reached the side of the bed, she brought her face close to mine and gently poked my cheeks.
“I hope you grow up quickly, Shion.”
I want that too.
But for now, please don’t push yourself too hard, big sister.
With a little nervousness, I reach out my hand to Marie.
Marie happily grabs my hand gently, and smiles brightly.
Emma watches this scene with a warm smile.
●○●○
Two years passed, and I began to acquire new abilities.
First, I became able to speak simple words.
I already knew the words, but this body has poor articulation and apparently slow cognitive processing.
So, how should I put it, any rational actions are generally difficult.
It’s strange how impulsive actions come easily.
I could crawl and eventually walk on two legs.
The first word I spoke was ‘rice.’
I couldn’t help it, I wanted to eat.
There’s only bread here.
And so, once I crossed three years old, the house became my castle.
My house was quite large.
Two floors, with eight rooms.
Some rooms were hardly ever used, and the kitchen was quite well-equipped.
Of course, compared to the modern world, it was modest, but at this level of civilization, I think we were quite well-off.
Probably due to the family background. I still don’t know our exact standing.
Outside the house, there was a courtyard. Since there were no houses around, it seemed quite rural.
So far, I haven’t met anyone outside my family.
The house was made of wood, with window glass, but of low quality.
Dishes were mostly pottery or wooden.
There were some silver utensils, but not many.
The clothing resembled European medieval style.
My hair was a fiery red, a bit different from Marie’s orange and Emma’s golden colors.
My features were distinctly foreign.
I think they’re quite well-defined, but my eyes might give off a slightly stern impression.
Lacking in facial expression changes, I might come across as insolent.
I was in the courtyard.
I watched Marie running around the courtyard, wondering what was so amusing.
I wonder why children run around so much. It’s a mystery.
As I sat on the stairs, Marie ran towards me.
“Shion! Let’s play together!”
“…Run?”
“Yes! Let’s run!”
At five years old, my sister, whose current obsession was running, said with a beaming smile.
What should I do? I’m more of an indoor person.
I don’t really like physical activities, and even at three years old, I’m a bit mature for my age.
I’d prefer to decline if possible, but my sister, sparkling with excitement, wouldn’t listen to me.
With a sense of resignation, I stood up and lined up beside Marie.
“Let’s go! Ready, set, go!”
We all started running together.
Me at three years old, and Marie at five.
Our physique was completely different, and she had overwhelmingly more strength.
Naturally, there was no way I could win, and the distance between us widened.
But children have amazing stamina.
An adult would get tired quickly, but children bounce back to energy in no time.
On the flip side, they get sleepy quickly.
I chased after Marie, following her back as we ran.
By the age of three, you can at least run. Though a bit unsteady.
We circled the courtyard, and Marie came to a stop.
“I win! Shion, you’re slow!”
“You’re just fast, sis.”
“Is that so? Hehe, well, I’m the big sister after all!”
In front of my triumphant sister, I could only think, “You’re a cute one.”
Marie lifts me up and is genuinely happy, but when something bothers her, it shows on her face immediately.
She has an easy-to-read personality. It’s especially evident in children.
Marie suddenly turned her head towards the main gate.
“It’s Father!”
Sensing something, Marie dashed towards the main gate. Despite being a little tired of running, I followed suit.
The sound of hooves echoed, and the gate opened with a metallic scraping sound.
A carriage appeared, passing through the courtyard and stopping in front of the entrance.
A dapper, bearded man on the coachman’s seat climbed down, and Marie jumped into his arms.
“Welcome back!”
“Hahaha, I’m home, Marie. You’re as lively as ever.”
“Yeah! People say my hair color is as vibrant as the sun and full of energy!”
“Is that so? Hahaha!”
Father smiled happily and ruffled Marie’s head.
Marie squinted her eyes in delight, resembling a cat.
As for me, I stood nearby and watched the two.
Hugging Father would be a bit awkward. Well, I can’t do that; I’m a man in his thirties.
Father approached me, holding Marie.
“Welcome back, Father.”
“I’m home, Shion. You’re as reliable as ever.”
“It’s not true. Sister is the reliable one.”
And so, it was. My sister had an air of superiority, puffing out her chest proudly.
“Now then, Father is going to fix the carriage, so go inside the house.”
“Yes.”
“Yes.”
Father got on the carriage and moved to the stable at the end of the garden.
He’s my father, Gawain.
I don’t know exactly what kind of work he does.
I want to know various things soon.
I have some freedom to move around and can communicate to some extent.
And I’ve managed to give the impression of being ‘quite composed for my age.’
With this, I won’t be questioned much even if I act a bit more mature.
Though there are limits since I’m still three years old.
It might be a bit early to investigate magic and things about this world, but my patience is running thin.
I thought it would raise suspicion if I suddenly started talking about magic right after being born, so I kept quiet.
Starting today, I’ll slowly start asking questions.
“Come on! Shion, come in!”
Called by Marie, I entered the house.
