Magic Maker – How to make magic in another world –
Chapter 193 A Hero’s End
Mariann Ornstein, also known as Marie, was furious.
She felt anger at her own helplessness.
Inside the collapsing Abyss, knights and fairies were continuing to move to escape.
The collapse intensified gradually, with countless rocks falling from the ceiling.
“Run! Run!”
Dominic shouted desperately.
Despite her semi-conscious state, Marie managed to hold on to her awareness.
Marie was being carried on Dominic’s back.
Clenching her teeth and maintaining her consciousness, Marie opened her mouth.
“Put me down… Shion is… Shion is…!”
Amidst the thunderous noise of the collapse, Marie’s faint voice didn’t reach anyone.
However, it somehow got through to Dominic.
“No, Marie-sensei! It’s dangerous to go back!”
“Put me down…! I don’t want to leave Shion alone!!”
Even in a state where she could barely breathe, Marie shouted.
She was moving on sheer willpower alone.
But no matter how desperately she tried, she couldn’t escape from Dominic’s firm grip.
Marie could think of nothing but Shion.
She had to save Shion; she couldn’t leave him alone.
She didn’t want to be left behind or leave anyone behind anymore.
She had sworn to stand and fight alongside him, to walk with him.
She had become stronger for that purpose.
She had tried to be strong.
So why was she being saved by Shion again?
As an older sister, she was always being helped by her younger brother.
Ever since she was young, she wanted to help her brother as his older sister.
That’s why she tried so hard.
But all her efforts always seemed to go to waste.
Even when she thought she had saved him, she would find herself being saved.
It was always like that.
So she kept trying harder to ensure it would never happen again.
She worked hard and changed everything.
But why, why was nothing going right?
Marie was consumed with self-blame.
She was frustrated with her own powerlessness, but that feeling soon vanished.
Her own feelings didn’t matter now.
She had to save Shion.
Marie tried to break free from Dominic.
But she had neither the strength nor the magic power left, with only the strength of an infant remaining.
“Let me go… please, I beg you, take me to Shion.”
She pleaded over and over again.
But Dominic wouldn’t listen.
To Marie, Shion was the most important person in the world.
She felt nothing but hatred for Dominic, who was preventing her from going to Shion.
“No, I won’t let you go. Shion-sama asked me. He asked me to take care of you, Marie-sensei. So no matter what happens, I won’t leave you. Absolutely not!”
“Stop jok—”
Just as she was about to pull Dominic’s hair in anger, she saw his face.
He was crying.
The knight couldn’t hold back his sadness and frustration.
Seeing his awkward but sincere expression, Marie couldn’t stay angry.
Dominic felt the same way.
He felt ashamed for abandoning Shion to escape.
But because it was Shion’s request, he was determined to see it through.
Marie hung her head, powerless.
The strong thread of her will snapped, and her body stopped moving.
There were several markings made with fairy stones along the corridor.
Shion had made those marks.
Marie thought that maybe Shion had predicted this.
He might have even anticipated that she and Dominic would be able to use magic senses.
If so, her little brother was incredibly brilliant.
And she couldn’t help but feel an overwhelming affection for him.
“There’s the exit!”
Someone shouted.
A dazzling sunlight shone upon them.
A single ray of light brought relief.
As soon as everyone was outside, a change occurred.
The ground shook louder than ever, and the Abyss trembled.
“Get away!”
Following Dominic’s order, everyone hurriedly moved away from the Abyss.
Even amid the tremors, they desperately distanced themselves from the Abyss.
After a while, exhausted, everyone stopped moving.
Dominic did the same, gently setting Marie down before collapsing himself.
A few minutes later, the Abyss crumbled.
With a roar, the small mountain fell apart.
The booming noise continued for a while.
They huddled low, enduring the flying dust.
The abnormality continued for a while.
Everyone watched in stunned silence.
They were too shocked to speak.
After a few more minutes, the noise finally ceased, and the dust began to clear.
With such a tremendous noise and impact, everyone believed the Abyss had completely collapsed, making the interior no longer intact.
Marie thought so too.
“No, no! Shion…!!”
“Marie-sensei! It’s dangerous!”
Marie staggered towards the Abyss.
Though Dominic tried to stop her, Marie didn’t listen.
She stumbled back towards the Abyss.
The collapse had already stopped, leaving only a heap of rubble.
The entrance was gone.
The entire Abyss had collapsed.
There was no cavity, and likely no gaps inside either.
Marie plopped down.
Stunned, she just stared at the collapsed Abyss.
Dominic clenched his fists tightly while looking at Marie’s back.
Blood oozed from his hands.
The other knights, beginning to accept the situation, slumped their shoulders and gazed at the rubble.
The Abyss had collapsed.
So Shion must be…
As everyone despaired, only one figure moved.
It was Marie.
With trembling hands, she started clearing the rubble.
“It’s okay… big sister will… save you… Shion, it’s okay.”
Her actions evoked pity.
She was a determined, single-minded sister.
It was such a pitiful and sad sight.
Her love for her brother was so strong that she couldn’t accept the reality.
No one could find the words to say.
Marie couldn’t even grasp small stones, dropping and picking them up repeatedly.
Though everyone knew it was futile, Marie alone hadn’t given up.
Murmuring “It’s okay, it’s okay” as if to reassure herself, Marie continued to clear the stones.
No one spoke, and everyone continued to blame themselves.
“Shion-sama! Lady Marie!!”
It was Winona’s voice that broke the silence. She appeared along with Count Goltba and several knights.
“W-What is… What has happened here!?” “Lady Marie…? Where is Shion-sama!?”
Panicking, Winona looked around and, finding Marie, immediately began searching for Shion. However, Shion was nowhere to be seen. Winona then turned her questioning gaze towards Dominic. Dominic, looking as though he had swallowed something bitter, slowly shook his head.
“W-What do you mean? Shion-sama is safe, right…? He must be safe, right?”
Winona asked the other knights besides Dominic. However, everyone averted their eyes and said nothing. No, they couldn’t say it. That Shion was dead. Even saying it out loud was too much.
“Shion Sensei…? No, it can’t be. He promised to research with me. There’s no way…”
Count Goltba was in despair. The usually kind old man was no longer there, only an elder who had lost someone precious stood in his place. His usual youthful spirit was gone, replaced by the frailty of old age. Winona was stunned. Overwhelmed by the events, she lost her strength and fell to her knees.
“N-No… Shion-sama… That can’t be…”
Winona’s eyes gradually filled with tears, which soon began to spill over. Everyone could understand her feelings. Her master, Shion, had died. While everyone was engulfed in sorrow, only Marie kept moving her hands. It was a blind and inefficient action, but everyone understood her feelings. After a while, Marie collapsed. The willpower that had kept her conscious had finally run out. Dominic went to Marie’s side and cradled her, likely to fulfill Shion’s final request.
“…Let’s go home.”
Dominic’s final order, uttered weakly. No one objected, and everyone, heads bowed, began to walk away.
