Magic Maker – How to make magic in another world –
Chapter 19 First magic
The experiment began.
It was quite a reckless experiment.
I persuaded my reluctant father to participate in the experiment with me.
Or rather, we weren’t allowed to do it alone, Marie and I.
I was grateful for that.
Having my father around indeed made me feel more at ease during the experiment.
“You’re really going to do this, Shion?”
With a strained expression, my father stood by my side.
I was shirtless.
It was necessary to avoid danger.
“Of course, Dad. If we’re doing this, let’s see it through to the end!”
“Ugh! I can’t refuse when I see my son’s sparkling face.
Very well. I’ll stick with you to the end! Come on!”
In the distance, my sister was practicing her swings.
It seemed she had no intention of joining us today.
Well, to be honest, she had an attitude of, ‘I’m okay with it if you want me to join.’
Dad was quite enthusiastic, though.
And recently, it seemed like my sister was spending a lot of time practicing her swordsmanship.
Maybe she’s concerned about the battle with the goblins.
Facing monsters must have been frightening.
She doesn’t show it on the surface and doesn’t say anything.
I worry, but I acted as usual.
When I was struggling with not having magic, my sister did the same for me.
If my sister ever agonized over something and suffered, I’d be there to help at that time.
Watching my sister swing her sword diligently, I had made up my mind.
In front of the bonfire, I gathered magical power in my right hand.
It was an experiment to observe the reaction of gathered magical power with fire.
However, I would gradually change the conditions of the experiment.
Variations in the amount of gathered magical power, changes in the intensity of the fire, reactions to high heat rather than fire, and so on.
I would change various conditions and record the results.
It was a dull task but a necessary one.
“Let’s do it! Dad!”
“Anytime!”
I made the magical power come into contact with the fire.
Instantly, the fire caught on.
“It’s so hot!”
“Here we go!”
Dad splashed water from the bucket.
The fire went out.
“Ah, it’s hot! No change in temperature! Smoke is a dark gray. Flame is blue. Increase the amount of fire!”
“Got it, adding more firewood! …Ready!”
“Yeah! Let’s do this!”
“Come anytime!”
I gathered magical power in my hand.
I gave magical power to the fire.
It ignited.
“It’s so hot!”
“Here!”
A splash of water.
The fire was extinguished.
“No change in temperature. I mean, I can’t tell! No change in smoke, flame, or color!
Next, I’ll try reducing the amount of magical power.”
“Alright, go for it!”
I reduced the amount of magical power that touched the fire.
It instantly ignited similarly.
It was hot. But the intensity of the fire seemed weak.
“It’s hot!”
“Here you go!”
My father, now accustomed, poured the water from the bucket over me with smooth movements.
I didn’t get burned on my hand.
It was quite a brief moment, and the flame of magical power was not as hot as actual fire.
But even I knew this was a reckless experiment.
“Oh, there’s no change in temperature! Slight changes in smoke and flame color.
The fire was weak. The strength of the fire spreading changes based on the amount of magical power!
I continued with such things.
From that day on, I continued almost every day.
On days when Dad wasn’t around, I refrained from researching fire attribute magic because it was dangerous and instead spent time on training my magical power.
And then, a month later.
There were a few things I had understood.
One. The amount of fire spreading due to magical power release varies depending on the amount of magical power gathered.
The more magical power, the more it determines the strength of the fire one can control in their hand. This part was similar to the image of magic.
With the consumption of magical power, powerful magic could be used.
Two. I tried various combustions, and it seems to ignite even without fire if it’s at a high temperature.
Three. Even when in a magical state, it just ignites normally when touched. This was expected, but in the magical state, it reacts like fire would on a human body, keeping the flame red as it normally would.
Four. This is related to magical gathering, but when in a state where a part of the body is covered like with gloves, the magical power is released from the body through the clothing when gathering magic. In this state, when touching fire, it spreads just like before, and the gloves catch fire.
To summarize the above four points:
You can adjust the firepower based on the amount of magical power, but since it spreads to the body, it’s not practical and is dangerous.
It seems magical power plays a role similar to flammable material.
However, this is just one aspect, and it’s not the only one.
Considering the various changes due to magical power reactions, I’m thinking of experimenting with other phenomena.
For a month, I tried various things, but I’ve judged that I won’t achieve any more progress from here.
And now, we are in the living room.
Seated at the table, my father, sister, and I began discussing.
“Shion, I think this experiment was quite meaningful, but I don’t feel like we’re making progress.
We said that magic creates things like fire.
Creating things is a difficult stage, I understand that. That’s why we’ve set the goal of handling fire.
With that in mind, I’ll state this; it seems difficult to achieve even that at this rate.
Right now, it’s just that the fire is catching on to magical power.
You can make some adjustments, but it’s meaningless to stop there.”
“That’s right. I think what Dad’s saying is true.
In the initial stages, I wanted to have flames reside on the palm of my hand or even my whole hand and then release or shoot it at another target.
But it seems like we’re not getting there.”
“If only we could wear gloves that don’t let the fire through… however, such a thing doesn’t exist.”
A completely fireproof glove was unlikely to exist.
If such a thing existed, firefighting in this world would be easy.
While my father and I were pondering what to do, my sister timidly spoke up.
“Hey, what about that? The trout’s light orb. That’s a magical orb, right?
If that’s the case, then if we can do that, we should be able to transfer fire while it’s away from our hand, right?”
“Yeah. I thought about that too, but I couldn’t quite do it…”
“Huh? I can do it though.”
My sister casually said and turned her palm upwards.
Immediately, a small light orb floated up from her palm and gradually disappeared into the air.
“Huh? H-how, why can you do it!?
And when did you become able to gather magical power like that!?”
“I asked Shion for the method and tried it myself. But I don’t have as much magical power output as Shion, apparently.”
So, this is what they call a genius.
While I spent time training my magical power, my sister, while practicing swordsmanship, had managed to not only gather magical power but even release it from her body effortlessly.
“H-How are you doing it?”
“Just normally. I try to let it out from my palm, and it comes out.
But it’s quite difficult to adjust, you know?”
While saying this, she had multiple orbs floating.
I couldn’t make a single one.
Though tormented by a sense of powerlessness, I decided to think positively.
If it’s proven that others can do it, then I should be able to as well.
But I hadn’t been able to release it from my body even once.
Yet my sister was doing it so effortlessly.
A floating orb from her palm, about the size of a ping-pong ball.
And I observed the state of magical gathering.
Compared to me, there was only a thin layer of magical power.
I knew there was a difference in magical power output.
But even so, the light seemed considerably weak.
It struck me!
I focused magical power in my palm.
Then, concentrating my focus, I tried to release the magical power with intention.
In the next moment, a light orb about the size of a baseball appeared and floated up, disappearing into the sky.
“Oh, you did it!”
“You did? I can’t see it, which is frustrating… But how did you do it? Why couldn’t you do it until now? Why did it suddenly work?”
“Well, to put it simply, I think there was an issue with adjusting the amount of magical power for external release. Let’s say the total magical power output for one attempt is 100, and my current limit for gathering magical power is around 80. I tried to release the 80 gathered magical power directly from my right hand. But to release it, I needed to leave some magical power in my palm. The process of releasing requires energy, and having some magical power remaining in my palm enables the release.”
Imagine the situation where water droplets are falling from a ceiling due to accumulated moisture. Not all the water droplets fall to the ground; some remain on the ceiling. It was somewhat impossible to forcibly remove all the remaining water.
Upon reflection, I feel this also connects to why, during magical gathering, a certain percentage of magical power inevitably remains in the body. It’s impossible to expel all the magical power carried by the body, and to expel it requires a corresponding amount of magical power. Consequently, only about 60 magical power can be charged for release. It feels quite inefficient, but for now, it doesn’t matter.
“Let’s go outside right away!”
“Yeah, Dad, come with us!”
“Sigh… you both seem to be having so much fun, it’s envy-inducing.”
Accompanied by the two of them, we headed outside. Dad, as always, prepared the bonfire. I took off my upper clothes and filled a bucket with water. My sister watched from a little distance.
“Alright, we’re ready, Shion!”
“Alright, here we go!”
I directed my hand towards the bonfire, gathered magical power in my palm, and then released it from my body. When the released magical power touched the fire, it began emitting a blue flame. It floated into the air in that state and disappeared midway.
“Oh, wow!”
“Yayyyyyyy! Shion, it floated!”
My father and I were smiling with joy. Even my sister, while looking amused, applauded.
Finally.
I did it.
This is magic!
Huh? Is it a bit lackluster?
It’s okay. It’s still in the prototype stage.
Here is the first prototype magic.
Compared to the magic I know, it’s quite crude.
After all, it’s just the fire floating and disappearing.
But what’s important is that I thought of this, discovered it, and brought it into existence.
In this world, there is no magic.
And I found it.
Above all, what made me the happiest was the fact that I could use magic.
I was so happy that tears started flowing without me realizing.
“Uu, I-I used magic… magic… uhe, uhehehe, hehe.”
“Wow! The usual creepy smile is back, Marie!”
“Hehehe, I’m glad. Shion.”
The two of them celebrated.
While that made me happy, there was still something I wanted to do.
After wiping away my tears, I took something out of my pocket.
“Is that… a portable flint?”
Yes, this is a one-handed flint. It’s shaped like a small pair of tweezers, with the flint fixed at the tip. It’s quite small, and the sparks it produces are small too. We usually use a larger flint at home because it’s easier to light a fire with.
“Wait, watch this.”
I extended my hand forward.
In my hand, I held the flint.
I gathered magic into it, and at the moment of releasing it externally, I struck the flint.
In an instant, the sparks created were bounced within the magic, becoming flames and igniting.
The mass of fire floated slightly and then disappeared.
“W-What was that!? Shion, that was truly magic, wasn’t it!?”
“A-Amazing! I never thought there could be such a use for it!”
I had a proud look and scratched the back of my head.
Both of them laughed happily, rejoicing as if it were their own achievement.
I had been thinking for a long time.
Starting a fire and then transferring it to magic.
But doing that was essentially just igniting another combustible material.
I was aware that it was quite inadequate to be called magic.
So, I had been considering the next stage in advance.
I thought it would be after I could perform external release, so I didn’t expect it to be realized so quickly.
Anyway.
I had achieved it.
Realizing the prototype magic. Even advancing its application.
There was still plenty of room for improvement.
Because for now, it’s just a floating ball of fire.
In terms of imagery, it’s like heading straight towards the target.
It seemed like it would take a while to realize that.
But I did use magic.
For over thirty years, I had yearned to use magic.
I was so filled with a fluffy sense of accomplishment that it made me anxious, wondering if this was reality.
“Hehe, uhuhuhe, I can use magic. I did it. I did it!”
“…Shion, you have an even creepier smile than usual due to your overwhelming happiness.
Moreover, your language skills have significantly declined…”
“You must have been really happy. Let’s leave him alone for now.”
“Yeah, okay.”
Even with their lukewarm glances, I was filled with happiness.
Oh, thank you, different world.
Thank you for giving me magic.
I’ll continue to work hard and pioneer magic study.
I’ll strive to use magic more and more.
I reaffirmed my determination to do just that.
