Magic Maker – How to make magic in another world –
Chapter 183 Heel
The Next Day.
Unable to see the morning sun due to being isolated from the outside, my body didn’t feel well. There seems to be a story about humans developing abnormalities if they continue to live in darkness.
Staying in a place like this for a long time feels like it could drive one insane. After a few hours of departure, the same scenery continued – red crystals, narrow passages, rocky walls, eerie atmosphere.
Even though I kept walking relentlessly, I couldn’t reach the square where the fairy village, my destination, was supposed to be. Using magical perception to explore the surroundings, there was still not a trace of the fairies.
Alsphere is a reasonably vast forest, but not exactly a massive one. It would take about a week to walk from one end to the other. The square with the fairy village could be reached in about an hour after entering the forest. However, I should have been walking for nearly ten hours already.
Perhaps it was because the path was intricately woven. The position of nearby landmarks could be grasped using magical perception, so I shouldn’t be retracing my steps.
Suddenly, I emerged into an open area. It resembled the camping spot.
“Have we come back…?”
“No, there are no landmarks. This is a new place.”
I replied to Dominic, who looked anxious. The fatigue of the knights was evident. If we didn’t make progress by the end of the day, returning might become an option.
I need to find Melfi and the others quickly and take them out. In Mediph, fairies are precious, and they are important friends to me. I can’t just go back without a reason.
In an instant, my skin tingled. The presence of magical power.
“It’s a monster!”
Its form is still not visible, but it is definitely approaching. With everyone on guard, the monster appears.
I was caught off guard. The monster didn’t emerge from the passage; it overflowed from the wall. Red orcs gradually emerged from the rocky wall, as if penetrating a highly viscous liquid substance.
“W-What is this!?”
Someone among the knights exclaimed. Amidst the growing agitation, the monsters revealed their entire bodies. Before we knew it, we were surrounded by ten red orcs.
If they had appeared from the passage, facing them would have been enough. We never expected them to emerge from the wall.
“Turn your backs to the center and face the wall! Leave the fight to Lord Shion and Marie sensei! Focus on defense!”
Dominic’s instructions were concise and accurate. The knights, on the verge of being overwhelmed by fear, regained their composure and began to act as instructed.
Marie and I moved instantly. Despite being a square, there was not much space to move around. With ten massive red orcs, it was only natural. Wide-ranging magic couldn’t be used as it would involve allies, and powerful magic like fusion magic was the same.
In that case, what needed to be done was already decided.
“Sis! I’ll hold them back! You finish them off!”
“Got it!”
Whether a slash would work on the Red Orcs is still uncertain. If they are like the wariths, regular attacks might not be effective, but the Red Orcs seem to have a tangible form. Let’s pray that sword attacks will be effective.
I use Boost and kick the ground. In an instant, I move close to one of the Red Orcs. It hasn’t kept up with my movements at all. I instantly gather magic power under my feet.
I transfer that magic power to the ground beneath the Orc’s feet and expand atmospheric magic. It’s a Fall. I released magic power from my feet because when running, waving hands causes too much sway and makes concentration difficult. Of course, it’s possible to release magic power with hands down, but if both the action and magic release can be done in one place, that’s better.
Especially when sprinting at full speed. The softened ground swallows the Red Orc’s feet. The Red Orc loses balance and struggles to stay upright.
Marie wouldn’t miss such a significant opening. In an instant, Marie leaps to the rear of the Red Orc. In the blink of an eye, Marie’s slash runs through.
“Hah! That was tough…!”
Marie’s hand tightly grips her beloved sword. It’s an ordinary sword made by Glast, a craftsman, not imbued with magic.
“In that case!”
While still in mid-air, Marie sheaths the flowing sword into its scabbard and draws the Iron Thunder Sword. In an instant, a sharp metallic sound rings out.
Marie’s slash. The Red Orc;s neck slightly tilts, and then it falls.
Alright! The Iron Thunder Sword is effective after all. I move to the next Red Orc. While running, I activate Fall, causing each Red Orc’s feet to be swallowed by the ground one by one. Each time, Marie cuts off the defenseless neck of the Red Orc.
“Uwaaaaaah!”
A distant Red Orc swung its axe down on the knights. The strike unleashed from its massive body was beyond what an ordinary person could endure.
“Don’t take it! Dodge! Aim for its legs if you get a chance!”
Dominic’s enraged voice echoed. There is no time to help them now. We have to exterminate the nearby Red Orcs.
Marie and I continued to defeat the Red Orcs. Six more to go. The knights were desperately fighting the Red Orcs, but it was like an ant facing an elephant. They were being blown away or cut, but there were no fatal injuries, and they were managing to defend themselves.
With Fall and Marie’s flash, we defeated another Red Orc. Five more to go.
“Gruooooo!”
One Red Orc raised a roar. The loud cry made me grimace, and I inadvertently stopped in the confined space.
“Kuh! Bolt!”
I cast a bolt spell toward the continuously screaming Red Orc. Spells become incantations without using words directly related to attributes. The term “Bolt” may evoke thoughts of lightning or electricity, and perhaps because that’s how I perceive it, purple magical power of lightning attributes emerges from my mouth.
Even just saying the magic name instinctively has some effect. The electric current born from my palm directly hit the face of the continuously screaming Red Orc.
“Gyii… Gruooo!”
But the damage was minimal. While it would have been powerful enough to singe a regular Orc, it seemed ineffective against the Red Orc. I expected it to charge at me in anger, but surprisingly, it remained calm.
“Stop that voice! Aim for the legs!”
“Uwaaaaa!! M-My ears! My ears!!”
“Damn it! Kill it! Fight!!”
No one is listening to Dominic’s instructions. The visible confusion is evident. This is not good. At least, if they can’t protect themselves, Marie and I won’t be able to fight.
We managed to defeat the nearby Red Orcs somehow. Four more to go.
“Uoooo!”
Bruno, while uttering a strange cry, slashed at the screaming Red Orc’s legs. The blow was shallow but undoubtedly dealt damage to the Red Orc. Not stopping there, Bruno continued to slash at the Red Orc repeatedly.
“Ha! Ha! Uraa!!”
“Gigigii, Gaga!”
The Red Orc directed hostility towards Bruno. Perhaps it became impossible to ignore. The roar stopped.
“I am Bruno, the captain of the Hundred-Man Squad! I won’t lose to a monster like you!!”
Bruno’s proclamation echoed in the square. Life returned to the faces of the knights. Thanks to the efforts of their comrade, their expressions shifted from fear to determination.
“Everyone, follow Bruno! Defeat that Red Orc!!”
“Ooooh!!”
The knights charge at the Red Orc. It may have seemed reckless, but it worked. The other Red Orcs were distracted by Marie and me, and the screaming Red Orc was focused on attacking Bruno in front. As a result, dealing with them became more manageable. The longer Bruno endured, the more the Red Orc suffered injuries.
“Watch out for its axe! Keep the attacks to a minimum, don’t overexert yourselves!”
Dominic’s precise instructions further refined the coordination. In the midst of it, Marie and I took down two more Red Orcs. Two more to go.
Each time I gathered magic at the Red Orc’s feet, the accuracy of the magic increased. It was a phenomenon that wouldn’t occur in the usual safe environments for research and training.
Magic performed in battle might lead to greater growth. While sprinting, I gathered magic at my feet and transferred it to the Red Orc. The Red Orc, seemingly anticipating Fall, leaped and tried to escape from the ground. But that was a mistake.
“If it jumps, it exposes its vulnerability,” Marie remarked with exasperation and severed the Red Orc’s neck. The thick Red Orc’s head dropped to the ground with a thud. Simultaneously, the Red Orc that had been screaming was defeated by the knights.
“We’ve vanquished them!!” Dominic shouted in triumph, and all the knights raised their swords.
I quickly checked for injuries. Two people were injured, but there were no fatal wounds. To have only two injured in that situation, the knights seemed to be quite skilled.
“How are the injuries?”
“Ugh, I-I’m fine.”
Lacerations ran across their arms and legs. This was just what I needed. It might sound a bit cruel, but there was something I had wanted to do for a while.
One injured person had magic, the other seemed to lack it. It was quite convenient. I placed my hands on the injured knight with magic.
“Please stay still.”
I charged magic into my palms. Gradually increasing the magic while using magical perception to sense the knight’s magic, I checked the situation. If there was any abnormality, I would stop. However, it turned out to be unnecessary worry. The wounds began to heal gradually.
“I-Is this… the wounds are healing!?”
Marie looked surprised beside me. It reminded me of the Einzwerf battle. At that time, I lost consciousness, and when I woke up, both fractures and wounds had healed. It was believed that my internal magic had acted. The shield was also a physical reaction to that magic. Through magic, the body was activated, enhancing physical abilities or creating a magical membrane to protect the body.
Perhaps it could be achieved with vast magic power. However, I thought about it then. If magic itself had effects like shields or healing, could it be done for others as well? When releasing magic, it doesn’t have a tangible form and just passes through. In other words, if completely released outside the body, the shield’s effect would be lost. However, if in contact with the body, there would be an effect.
Then, what would happen if I touched someone’s wound and flowed magic into it? In the early stages of learning magic release, there was a fear of purifying and carbonizing monsters if magic was flowed into them, so contact with humans was restricted. However, during the Lazy Syndrome treatment, I noticed that humans and monsters had different reactions to magic.
Considering all that information, I thought, “What if healing could be done by giving magic?” The knight’s wounds were gradually healing. The deep wounds of a few centimeters were cleanly healing. This was ‘Heal,’ recovery magic, magic that heals and mends people!
“Th-Thank you so much.”
“I-It healed… the wound…!?”
“S-So there’s such power… is this magic!?”
The knights expressed their gratitude one after another, marveling at the words. In the midst of this, the thought that came to me was…
“Ugh.”
Joy.
I can’t help it; my cheeks loosen. There are still injured people; I need to heal them. Besides, I still need to test it.
I went to the knight without magic and flowed magic again to heal the wounds. But it didn’t work. Even if I flowed magic, the wounds of someone without magic did not heal. It was as I expected. Maybe I had thought so, but it seems that the healing effect is not obtained without the influence of magic. Whether it’s oral magic, belt magic, or gathered magic, or even a spell, unless there is some trigger to become a magic user, there seems to be no effect of Heal.
“I’m sorry, it seems I can’t heal you.”
“N-No, it’s just a scratch, please don’t worry about it.”
Magic affects magic. However, since humans without magic don’t show a magical reaction, it seems that magic like Heal, which presupposes the effect of magic itself, has no effect.
At this point, it’s unclear whether it includes people who currently don’t have magic but have the potential, or if there’s a possibility they can become magic users through some method. Or, the lack of the effect of Heal could be evidence that they don’t possess any magic and have zero latent magic power. Either way, it became clear that the effect of Heal is not present in humans who do not possess magic.
Similar to the Lazy Syndrome, though people with little or no magic do not contract the disease. Anyway, there was a harvest in being able to use Heal.
“Hehe… I can heal others, I can use Heal!”
“Congratulations, Shion. That’s wonderful. Can I do it too?”
“Hmm, that might be difficult. Heal uses quite a bit of magic. If you use it on others, it requires a lot more magic compared to regular magic. Maybe for self-healing, it might work a bit. Perhaps since you’re good at Boost and magic manipulation, you can do it with less magic.”
“I see. It might be good to practice. But everyone did well, defeating the Red Orcs.”
“Getting praised by Marie sensei is an honor!”
“Honored!”
Dominic led the knights in saluting, even Bruno unexpectedly joined in. What could this mean?
“I am impressed by the battle just now. It was splendid maneuvering and swordsmanship!”
Ah, I see, that’s what it is. Although I’m used to it, their movements were truly amazing. They are strong. That’s probably why they can recognize strength in others.
“That much is only natural. You all should do your best too.”
“Yes! We will strive to improve!”
With that, the knights began confirming the bodies of the Red Orcs and collecting scattered equipment.
Marie and I watched the scene side by side.
“We defeated them more easily than I thought, which is reassuring.”
“Even with regular weapons, we wouldn’t have been able to inflict any damage.”
“It seems the Iron Thunder Sword is effective against the Crimson Day monsters. With this, even without using magic, we can fight to some extent.”
“That’s true. However, the Iron Thunder Sword can’t be used for a long time. We must not let our guard down.”
The Iron Thunder Sword that Marie had used had lost its magic power. When Marie pulled the trigger, the blade of the Iron Thunder Sword split in half vertically, and an electric current ran through the space. Magic was born, and it filled the blade.
It needed to stay in this state for a while to accumulate magic. Marie sheathed the Iron Thunder Sword, emitting a crackling electric sound.
The sheath of the Iron Thunder Sword is designed to accommodate the blade split in half. Therefore, it is quite wide. Originally, there should have been a box with replacement blades, but not everyone brought it. The Iron Thunder Swords collected from Mediph did not come with replacement blades. It’s unclear whether replacement blades were sold separately during distribution, or if they were discarded. Since there is no other item that can replace the blade, perhaps merchants or wholesalers were unaware of the proper handling. It’s likely because the concept of selling sets doesn’t exist.
“This is so noisy.”
“It’s just a matter of enduring until the magic accumulates.”
Marie seemed somewhat exasperated. At least for now, the usefulness of the Iron Thunder Sword has been proven. Even if the demons appear, it shouldn’t be a one-sided battle.
