Magic Maker – How to make magic in another world –
Chapter 179 Organization
After returning to Ajolam, we hurried to the castle to report. It seemed that the gatekeepers had already received reports from the knights, allowing us easy entry into the premises. After a brief wait of a few minutes, we handed over our weapons to the soldiers and were escorted to the king’s office.
The room was adorned with numerous books, documents, a luxurious sofa, a desk, and chairs, but was otherwise modestly decorated. King Ralfgang, standing by the window, turned to face us. The atmosphere felt somewhat softer compared to when we were in the audience chamber. This change was likely due to both his expression and demeanor, as well as the difference in his clothing. In the audience chamber, he wore opulent attire befitting a king, but now he appeared in more lightweight clothing, an appropriate choice when not required to make a public appearance.
In addition to King Ralfgang, there were several others gathered in the room. Presumably, there were individuals resembling ministers or high-ranking civil officials, knights who seemed to be generals or members of the royal guard, and also a butler and a maid. It’s worth noting that in some Earth countries, the term “prime minister” can refer to the supreme authority in political matters. However, in this world, it often denotes someone overseeing administrative affairs. The ultimate decision-maker and highest-ranking official in all matters related to the state and government is the king.
Setting aside such digressions, the six of us—myself, Marie, Winona, Count Goltba, Dominic, and Ms. Carla—were summoned. Winona seemed a bit uncomfortable, and a man who appeared to be a minister glanced at me with disdain. He was probably slightly younger than the Count, and standing next to him was a burly man who seemed to be a general. His imposing armored figure exuded an air of intimidation, and his bearded face only accentuated his rugged appearance.
“Dominic Jorg, Count Goltba Luzar, and guests of Goltba, welcome. Reinhardt Becker, Commander of the Royal Knights, and Utz Pauman, the Chancellor, are also present.”
King Ralfgang briefly glanced at Dominic and the Count, and the two of them bowed.
“I have heard the report. The Scarlet Magic… no, the Crimson Day, has occurred.”
I thought someone else would respond, but no one spoke. All eyes turned to me. Despite not being an important figure, it seemed like I needed to explain the situation.
“Yes. Early in the morning, when I went to Alsphere, we witnessed signs of the Crimson Day, where red magical energy… Crimson Magic covered the sky. A strange cave appeared in the forest, and we encountered a Red Orc emerging from it, which we successfully defeated. It seems that the influence of the Crimson Day caused the mutation or appearance of these creatures.”
“There were reports of suspicious phenomena occurring in Lystia… rumors mentioned such things. The Crimson Day is visible only to those with magical abilities, and creatures that are invisible to those without magical powers also appear. However, this is indeed a fact.”
“That’s correct.”
I responded without hesitation. King Ralfgang stared at me and then squinted slightly, making me feel as if I were being evaluated. I froze momentarily.
“Relax. I’m not suspecting anything. I’ve already confirmed everything. I sought the cooperation of those with magical abilities involved in the treatment of the Lazy Syndrome. There’s no doubt that Crimson Magic is swirling over the skies of Alsphere.”
Internally, I breathed a sigh of relief. The response was swift. It seemed that King Ralfgang was quite competent. To be a king or queen, one had to be skilled, or so it seemed. Nevertheless, he remained calm. I felt that he was oddly accepting the situation without much resistance. Shouldn’t he be more bewildered or skeptical? No, that wasn’t it. He must be disturbed, just not showing it. Even for someone like me, who had prior knowledge of the Scarlet Night and the magical beings, the unexpected arrival of the Crimson Day in Mediph was unsettling. I, who knew about the Scarlet Night and the magical beings in advance, was deeply disturbed. If that was the case, King Ralfgang, who hadn’t anticipated it, would likely be even more affected.
“Tell me more about the Crimson Day. Shion Ornstein.”
“Yes.”
I explained what I knew about the Scarlet Night and the Crimson Day. In Istria, during the Scarlet Night, creatures invisible to humans without magical abilities, like wraiths, appeared. The Lazy Syndrome also emerged during the Scalet Night. It was difficult to defeat magical beings without magic. Magic was effective against the creatures that appeared during the Scarlet Night and Crimson Day. Magical tools were also effective against magical beings. I deliberately didn’t mention the promise with Queen Milhya. It involved state secrets and would not benefit Lystia if disclosed. Alsphere was a special place in Mediph, and the ongoing events would likely be known throughout the region. The crisis should be understood by the King of Mediph, and the usefulness of magic should be communicated. Queen Milhya’s plans should also achieve some success, assuming the issues could be resolved.
“Superstitious nonsense. Magical beings and demons? The so-called Scarlet Night is nothing more than a far-fetched tale. Believing in things unseen is as foolish as those who deceive with false revelations of gods.”
The Prime Minister, Utz, spoke without attempting to conceal his malice. His reaction was expected and, in fact, the appropriate one. I remained composed, but Marie’s eyebrows twitched slightly. Please, don’t get angry now.
The Knight Commander standing next to the Prime Minister remained silent. Was he in agreement, or did he have no objections?
“However, Ornstein is the developer of Lazy Syndrome treatment. Lazy Syndrome has been effectively treated, and the technique is said to be performed with magic. The physicians who returned to Mediph after treating Lazy Syndrome also testify that magic is visible. Are they all spouting nonsense?”
“Well, that is true, but…”
“In fact, a cave suddenly appeared in Alsphere. Therefore, the need to rescue the fairies is evident. Whether you can see demons or red magic… Crimson Magic, as you mentioned, doesn’t change the fact that something must be done. So, shouldn’t we dispatch a rescue team?”
“Well, as you say.”
The king’s demeanor was evident even from a distance. Each word conveyed determination and duty.
“If that’s the case, let’s continue. Ornstein, do you believe that demons have not yet appeared?”
“Most likely. The Crimson Magic in the sky should be absorbed when demons appear. However, since it is still lingering in the sky, it is reasonable to assume that demons have not appeared. I’m not particularly knowledgeable about demons, so I can’t say for certain.”
“Then, is it reasonable to consider that the monsters that appeared in Alsphere before were hiding in the cave?”
“That possibility exists. The hidden cave likely revealed itself due to the Crimson Day. Before the Crimson Day, the monsters might have found a way to come out of the cave, similar to the principle in the fairy village.”
“So, it can be considered a precursor to the Crimson Day. Given the appearance of those creatures during the previous Scarlet Night, it is reasonable to assume that unknown creatures may emerge during the Scarlet Night or immediately after. However, the situation has already changed. First and foremost, we need to rescue the fairies. Infiltrating the cave requires a small elite group. Therefore, it seems necessary to organize a team composed only of those with magical abilities.”
After careful consideration, King Ralfgang turned his gaze towards a specific individual.
“Dominic, I entrust you with the command.”
Dominic showed a face full of astonishment. He hadn’t even thought about being appointed.
“Me…?”
“Yes. Any objections?”
“No.”
“Then, rescue the fairies in Alsphere. Fairies are crucial to our country. We cannot leave them unattended. Along with the rescue mission, investigate Alsphere and the cave. We need any information about demons or monsters. I entrust you with full command. Also, request the participation of Shion Ornstein and Mariann Ornstein in the team formation.”
I had anticipated it and mentally prepared myself. However, I never expected the king to directly address me. His judgment is swift. From my perspective, well-aware of the situation, it’s the correct decision, but considering King Ralfgang’s lack of detailed information, it’s an exceptionally accurate and rapid judgment. Naturally, others might find it incomprehensible.
Prime Minister Utz, seemingly eager to say something, was about to speak, but King Ralfgang spoke first.
“Both Ornstein individuals have been conducting research and investigations on fairies and creatures in Alsphere. Additionally, they have a good relationship with fairies, who are known for their wariness. Therefore, I consider them the most suitable candidates for the rescue mission. Moreover, our country lacks sufficient information on demons, creatures, and Scarlet Nights. Although the veracity remains unclear, it would be foolish to disregard the words of Shion Ornstein, who already has achievements. Both of them are also reputed for their combat skills. Therefore, forming a team is imperative.
Dominic Jorg is a captain of our country’s Royal Knights, and he, along with the Ornstein pair, Count Goltba Luzar, and Carla Ackerman, has been conducting research and investigations on Asphere. He possesses extensive knowledge of fairies in Alsphere, making him suitable for this mission as a member of the Mediph Kingdom. Hence, I have decided on this arrangement. Any objections?”
Prime Minister Utz appeared dissatisfied but refrained from saying anything. Captain Reinhardt of the Knights was silent throughout, making one wonder if he was genuinely paying attention.
“It seems there are no objections. We will handle the formation, so please wait for a moment. Do you need any specific equipment?”
“Lightning lamps, iron thunder swords, and discharge stones would be appreciated. They are all effective against demons and creatures that appear during Scarlet Nights.”
“Unfamiliar equipment, but we’ll arrange it. Anything else? Very well, I’ll rely on you.”
“Yes! I am Dominic Jorg. I will surely meet Your Majesty’s expectations!”
Unlike his usual self, Dominic gave a respectful salute befitting a model knight. Following Dominic’s lead, we were about to leave the room.
“Wait, Ornsteins. Both of you.”
Upon being stopped by King Ralfgang, Marie and I halted. As the others turned back, he gestured for them to leave the room first. Ralfgang, Reinhardt, Utz, and a few individuals who appeared to be maids remained.
With a slight tilt of his chin, Ralfgang urged Marie and me to stay. It felt awkward, but I wondered what this could be about.
“What are your thoughts on that?”
What could “that” refer to? We were perplexed, not understanding the intention behind the question.
“…Dominic. Have you heard anything about him?”
“I know that he serves in the Royal Knights.”
“I see. It’s not something to be discussed openly, but it seemed like I could trust you.
It’s not something to hide, though.”
Ralfgang stood by the window, looking outside.
“He is my son.”
“Your son!? But, isn’t the family name different?
Dominic goes by the name Jorg.”
“That’s his maternal family name. As the youngest, he has no right to the throne.
In Mediph, only up to the fifth son is granted the right to the throne.
There are exceptions, but they require significant achievements.”
“Dominic… I see.”
Indeed, he had an air of nobility and an oddly substantial amount of authority. Additionally, he seemed to have a close relationship with Count Goltba. It all made sense now.
“He has always been willful. Skillful, but lacking conviction.
Since childhood, he has been close to Goltba, and that might be a reason.”
Certainly, growing up alongside that count, Dominic was likely influenced. Come to think of it, there is a resemblance in certain aspects, like being absorbed in something. But he was part of the royal family. Wait, isn’t this problematic? The way Dominic was treated, especially by Marie, was quite rough, right? Marie, who usually holds her ground well, was visibly sweating, and her cheeks were twitching. It’s one thing if the person has some power, but if they’re part of the royal family, it’s a different story. It wouldn’t be surprising if charges of disrespect were brought up. What if there are consequences? Yeah, better start thinking about an escape plan.
“In the past, he seemed a bit aimless, but recently, he’s been working hard towards his goals. I heard he’s even learning swordsmanship from you, Mariann Ornstein. You seem to be quite skilled.”
“Well, um, yes, it’s, well, something like that.”
Marie showed a humble attitude. No, she’s just trying to cover up somehow. Normally, Marie would confidently answer such a question.
“In addition, I’ve heard he’s taken an interest in magic, actively pursuing studies. It seems he’s using the techniques for treating Lazy Syndrome, and it might be useful in the future. I’ve heard of your achievements, Shion Ornstein.”
“Well, uh, it’s, well, it’s due to his personal efforts, ha, ha…”
It felt like being strangled with cotton. Whether it was sarcasm or genuine praise, it was hard to tell at this point.
“He hasn’t achieved much as a member of the royal family. Fortunately, he’s suitable for this matter at hand. But I don’t think he’s particularly skilled. That’s why I have a favor to ask of you. Please, won’t you help my son?”
Transparent eyes were right in front of me. There was no room for doubt, just the genuine kindness of a father thinking about his son. It wasn’t a threat, especially if he was talking without any ulterior motive. It seemed to be a parental desire to let his son achieve something noteworthy. Huh? Does this mean King Ralfgang wants to give Dominic the right to succeed to the throne? I quickly dismissed the thought that crossed my mind. Involvement in politics never leads to anything good. I learned my lesson with the incident involving Queen Milhya. Despite being for the establishment of the Magic Academy, I’m well aware that I’ve been dragged into quite a troublesome affair. Moreover, thinking about the family matters of Mediph is terrifying. It’s better not to get deeply involved in this matter. Anyway, there’s no reason to refuse. Marie and I exchanged a brief glance, then nodded.
“Leave it to us, Your Majesty.”
“He’ll be fine as long as we’re here.”
“Thank you. I’m counting on you.”
King Ralfgang’s figure overlapped with that of my father for a moment. I couldn’t help but feel a slight longing for my hometown. I recalled the various things my father did for me. He’s probably still worried about me. Of course, my mother too. Actually, she might be more worried and flustered. Although I always feel sorry for causing them worry… We bowed briefly and left the office, guided by the waiting maid, proceeding down the corridor.
“After this is over, let’s go home for a bit.”
“Yes, that sounds like a good idea. We have various things to report as well.”
Marie probably felt the same way. She readily accepted my suggestion. Her motivation was already high to begin with. However, after talking with King Ralfgang, I felt even more strongly about it. I will definitely defeat the demons and overcome the Crimson Day.
An unexpectedly silent moment arrived. I remembered Marie’s words. She noticed that we weren’t blood-related. I don’t know where she learned that, but she undoubtedly knew the truth. Originally, I intended to keep it a secret until I reached adulthood. However, Marie knew.
…Did she change her attitude after learning that we’re not blood-related? Given the flow of the conversation, it felt like a natural assumption to make.
But why? Why would she care about such a thing?
Amidst the questions arising in my mind, I stole a glance at Marie. Almost as if we had planned it, she was looking at me too. We both averted our gazes, and an awkward silence filled the air. We were alone now. We should talk a bit, at least.
“Sister—”
Before I could utter anything, I noticed Winona and the others waiting in the distance. They acknowledged us with bows and waves. It seemed like it wasn’t the right time for conversation.
“…Shall we go?”
“…Yes.”
There was a slight sense of discomfort between us. We pretended not to notice it. Don’t think about it now. Focus on what’s in front of you. Reminding myself of this, I took a step forward.
