Magic Maker – How to make magic in another world –
Chapter 15 Goblin attack 1
As usual, the research is not progressing.
In this situation, it seems like I’ve reached a limit.
Alone in my room, I was murmuring to myself.
Every day, transitioning from the habitual gathering magic state to the depleted magic state.
Repeating this many times, pushing it to the brink of magic exhaustion.
Increasing both the total magic capacity and the limit of magic release.
However, the effectiveness of this training seems to be diminishing little by little.
“I don’t think it’s possible to continue the research based on the information from Trout.”
It seems necessary to change the approach.
However, there is no information about magic.
Trout’s phenomenon was discovered by my sister, but I don’t know of any other similar occurrences.
But I have a rough idea.
At this stage, only living beings possess magic.
So, the logical step would be to search for other living beings that possess magic.
Whether they exist or not, based on the information I have now, this seems to be the only indicator.
Based on that, I am narrowing down the possibilities.
Monsters and fairies.
These two types of beings.
Concerning fairies, it’s a bit uncertain, but they are entities close to the concept of living beings.
In my understanding, they fall into the category of fantastical creatures.
In a different world, when it comes to beings related to magic, I think there are only monsters and fairies.
I haven’t encountered monsters yet, and I’ve only seen fairies from a distance.
Encountering monsters for research seems impossible, and obtaining fairies would be difficult.
There are things I want, but they are not something a child would desire.
Now, what should I do?
No ideas come to mind even after pondering, so ultimately, I could only continue the usual magic training.
○●○
Half a year passed, and I turned seven.
I am growing, but my magical research remains mostly unchanged.
I contemplate what to do, spending my days without reaching a conclusion.
One day, while in my room, practicing magic, I gazed at the mass of magic gathering in my right hand.
Magic accumulation, magic concentration, and lately, practicing magic maintenance.
Usually, a few seconds are the limit, but I’ve been gradually extending that duration.
Currently, I can maintain it for about ten seconds.
I don’t have much sentiment about the solidification of magic.
Because there’s no inherent meaning to manipulating magic itself.
At first, not understanding the rules, I released magic with strong emotions.
But as I arrived at the idea that emotions are also a form of will, I succeeded in releasing magic relatively easily.
Purely mechanical emotions and will do not generate magic, but clear emotions seem unnecessary.
Perhaps it’s just a matter of getting used to it.
Through repeated magic release, I began to understand the modulation of emotions and, along with will, the generation of magic.
In simple terms, beneath actions and will lies emotion.
Even if the emotions aren’t clearly defined, I should always be seeking something and trying to do something.
In this case, “desire” might be a more appropriate expression for emotion.
In states of confusion, extreme fatigue, or when consciousness is muddled, it’s different, but under normal circumstances, it should align as described earlier.
In other words, if there’s a moderate balance of emotion and will, magic is released.
It’s extremely vague, but presumably, magic is released based on the proportion of emotion, will, and desire.
It took a lot of practice to understand this delicate balance.
But once I reached that point, I hit a wall again.
This time, it’s a dead end. There are no other pointers.
I need to somehow obtain monsters and fairies as planned, or at least make contact with them.
As I was lost in thought, I heard loud footsteps and voices from downstairs one day.
Curious, I descended the stairs.
Outside, it was pouring rain, and the sound of the water was loud.
However, in an environment where concentration is needed, rain sounds are better than complete silence.
At least for me.
There’s something comforting about the sound of rain.
Descending to the first floor and heading to the living room, I saw my father standing there, drenched, still wearing his coat.
Next to him were several villagers. Adult men dressed similarly, their expressions stern.
It seemed like they were discussing something with my mother.
Something was off.
This has never happened before.
Feeling uneasy, my sister came down from the second floor.
She must have come downstairs out of curiosity too.
Together, we moved towards our father and the others, and they noticed us.
“Um, is something wrong?”
They exchanged glances as adults, but then my father spoke.
“Goblins.”
“Goblins? Y-you mean monsters!?”
“Yeah, that’s right. There have been reports of a few goblins spotted in this vicinity. It’s dangerous, but we have to go and exterminate them. Make sure you all stay inside the house, no matter what.”
Goblins were a representative presence among monsters.
They were often depicted as minor foes, prey for fledgling heroes and adventurers.
I wondered if this world was the same.
However, despite that, everyone’s faces were serious, and some were even pale.
My father turned to my mother and said, “Gather all the village women, elderly, and children here. There are about thirty of them. The men will head to the goblin’s nest to exterminate them. Do not, under any circumstances, go outside.”
“Yes, understood.”
My mother, who usually wore a gentle expression, looked serious today.
The adults were flustered, and I couldn’t help but feel this much anxiety.
Even though I had the mind of an adult, I was still a child who knew nothing.
It seemed Marie was the same. She tightly held my hand.
“I-It’ll be okay. Dad and the others will take care of it. And I’ll protect you too.”
Marie had a sword at her waist.
Indeed, her swordsmanship was quite impressive for a child.
But she had no real combat experience and was still just a child.
Would it work against monsters?
I had nothing but vague unease.
Moreover, when I heard “monsters,” I couldn’t help but think of it like a game, and the sense of reality was thin.
On top of that, the opponent was goblins.
I had doubts if they would cause this much panic.
However, judging from everyone’s reactions, there was no doubt that they were quite dangerous creatures.
It seemed like I should reconsider my thoughts.
“Alright, we’ll head to their nest. It’s fine, there are probably only a couple of them. We’ll manage, especially with all the men.”
Probably, my father said this to reassure everyone.
While it was directed at my mother, it was clear he intended for us to hear.
But with those words, I began to understand the reality.
“All the men,” that’s what my father said.
There were fifteen adult men in the village.
They were going to defeat two goblins, all of them together.
They had to. Perhaps even then, it wouldn’t be easy.
It was that dangerous.
In an instant, I grasped the situation and reflexively stopped my father.
“Dad.”
“Shion, I’m sorry, but we’re short on time. We can talk later.”
“I-It’ll be quick. Dad, do goblins have the intelligence and physical ability to get from outside to the second floor?”
Father looked puzzled, but quickly answered.
“No, they don’t. They’re not smart, and there are few protrusions on the outer walls, so they can’t climb.”
“In that case, we’ll barricade ourselves on the second floor. We’ll try to keep the first-floor entrance as blocked as possible with furniture or something. That way, even if the goblins come, they won’t be able to get in, right?”
When I said this, my father put his finger to his chin and contemplated.
Mother and the adults next to us looked at me in surprise.
Marie anxiously watched our interactions.
“Certainly… Well, please do it that way. Send a signal upstairs when we return.”
“Yeah, got it. I won’t leave the room until dad and the others come back.”
Father nodded in a relaxed manner and patted my head.
“I’m counting on you, Shion.”
And then, he immediately left with the adults.
Marie held my hand.
I felt her grip strengthen slightly.
“S-So, let’s board up the windows before everyone comes. Um, I have nails from Glast, and we have boards set aside for situations like this. Uh, where were they?”
Mom started to panic.
Seems like she’s weak in emergencies.
“They should be in the storage shed in the courtyard. I’ll go get them. Mom, please gather the nails. Sister, let’s go.”
“Uh, y-yes, understood. Please.”
“Yeah.”
Both of them seemed quite flustered.
It seemed like I, being the most composed even if just a little, should take charge.
Thinking that, I began moving the boards from the courtyard’s storage shed.
Later, elderly villagers, women, and children gathered at our house, and we explained the situation. They offered their help.
Maron, Red, and Rose were with them.
Everyone worked together to carry and board up the windows. We boarded up the door and used furniture to block it as an extra precaution.
This should be a bit of an obstacle.
I don’t know what kind of creature a goblin is, but it shouldn’t be able to easily intrude.
Thirty non-combatants were anxiously gathered on the first floor.
Mothers embraced their children, elderly couples held hands, and everyone showed their anxiety.
Mom, Marie, and I were no different.
But there’s still something we need to do.
“Um, everyone. We’re going to the second floor now.
Please don’t go outside until the goblin subjugation is over.
We’ve run out of boards, so once you’re in the room, please place furniture in front of the door.
Also, since there are many of us, let’s have around five to seven people in each room.
It’s okay, I’m sure dad and the others will defeat the goblins.”
I spoke calmly.
Seeming to find reassurance in a seven-year-old child being composed, they seemed to calm down a bit.
I led everyone to the second floor.
There are five rooms on the second floor.
Mine and Marie’s room.
The couple’s bedroom.
A study and a guest room.
It was decided that I, Marie, mom, Rose, and Maron would go into one room.
Red would be in the same room as his family.
I don’t know the details, but Rose doesn’t have a family and seems to be taken care of by the village chief.
Since the village chief can fight, he went for the subjugation.
Maron has a large family, so mom would take care of her.
Red is also with his family. Since he has a big family, they got a separate room.
We were going to Marie’s room.
There weren’t many decorations, but there were a few stuffed animals.
The curtains and sheets were in light shades or lace, giving it a girl’s room vibe.
Once we entered the room, we moved the desk in front of the door and sat on the bed and chairs.
Outside, it was pouring rain, and the situation was unclear.
It made me feel even more anxious.
A monster, huh.
I had wanted to investigate for my magic research, but this seems difficult.
I don’t want to die, of course.
Maron clings to Rose.
Mom and Marie sit next to me, holding my hand and patting my head.
Time passes in silence.
It’s different from usual.
I never imagined something like this.
But that’s reality.
Disasters can strike suddenly without any preparation.
I died like that too.
I never want to experience that again.
And I don’t want to make everyone taste that either.
I didn’t say anything.
I really wanted to ask about the goblins.
But if I were to talk about that now, it would only fuel everyone’s anxiety.
So I stayed silent.
Besides, if the goblins were nearby and heard us talking, we would reveal our location.
That would be dangerous.
I think everyone has such thoughts.
So I endured in silence.
