Magic Maker – How to make magic in another world –
Chapter 100 Class starts
The first day of the Laziness Syndrome Treatment Training.
The provisional Laziness Syndrome Treatment facility, commonly known as the school, in the training area.
This room seems to be used for the training of soldiers and some higher-ranking knights.
However, it doesn’t seem to be used frequently, and the interior is empty.
There is not a single piece of equipment.
It seems that when training is scheduled, participants bring their own equipment.
It feels somewhat like a small gym.
Winona and the maids are watching along the wall.
The students have already gathered.
While many wore respectful attire yesterday, today, the dress code is somewhat more casual.
This is because I informed them to come in comfortable clothing for the practice of magic power release.
“Let’s begin the training today. Thank you for your cooperation.”
There was no response.
Well, of course not. They haven’t been taught to respond. But it was evident that they held a different impression of me compared to yesterday.
About half of them had sparkling eyes, looking at me with curiosity. The boy from yesterday, Isaac Messerschmidt, if I remember the name correctly, was also openly curious, not bothering to hide it as he gazed at me. However, when our eyes met, he awkwardly turned away and whistled, giving off a rather childish vibe, or perhaps he’s just the type to wear his emotions on his face. I had to suppress a laugh.
Now, the question is the other half.
They are just observing from the back, seeming uninterested. Some are uninterested, some want to appear uninterested despite their curiosity, some genuinely don’t care, some are still skeptical, and some are just unclear.
The old man who stood out earlier is observing from the back. Is he really just keeping an eye on things?
The commoner boy is with the curious group, but he stands a bit away from the nobles.
Honestly, it’s still early, and it’s impossible to understand everyone’s situation. I’ll get to know them as we go, and it’s better to identify issues after starting. I did my best with the preparation, even thinking about the interaction from yesterday in advance. I didn’t expect such a strong reaction, though.
Now, let’s start by making friends with the students who are sparkling with childlike curiosity.
“I mentioned this yesterday, but magic power refers to the internal energy within the body. Everyone here already possesses magic power within their bodies. Once you learn to manipulate this magic power, you’ll be able to cure lazy syndrome. Lazy syndrome occurs when magic power is depleted, leading to a state of physical and mental lethargy. Hence, individuals with magic power can treat patients by imparting their magic power to them.
So, first, with regard to magic power—”
“Um, may I ask a question?”
As I was about to delve into the next topic, a high-pitched voice interrupted. It was the girl from the curious group, her stern expression fixed on me. No, she was probably just observing, right? Her expression was the embodiment of an impassive face. Despite her beautiful features, the stern atmosphere and expression ruined the overall impression. By the way, she is quite petite and has a youthful appearance, making her look cute to me.
“Yes, um, you’re Eris Esharos, right?”
“Huh? Uh, y-yes, that’s right. Ahem, so, regarding my question, you mentioned that if a person with magic power gives magic power to cure lazy syndrome, wouldn’t the person providing the magic power end up getting lazy syndrome?”
She quickly grasped the information from the recent explanation. She seemed like a quick thinker. Her question was natural, something I had thought about multiple times, as it was a concern—what if I get lazy syndrome and become unable to treat anyone? For that reason, I had to proceed cautiously.
“It’s possible.”
I responded nonchalantly.
In an instant, a wave of unease swept through the students.
Well, that’s to be expected.
I’m stating a treatment method where the one administering the treatment, the healer, might get sick.
“D-Do we have to use such a method? Isn’t it dangerous?”
“Yes, well, it is somewhat risky. However, doctors everywhere engage in treatments with some level of risk. While lazy syndrome is not contagious, physicians dealing with epidemic diseases face even greater risks. Considering that, the risk is relatively low, and if you don’t make mistakes in the procedure, the chance of getting lazy syndrome should be very low. Also, you’re here to help those suffering from your own country’s illness, right? I hate to say it, but resolving issues without any risk is quite challenging.”
The students, who were initially curious and gleaming with interest, now looked bewildered. They were drawn in by the magic power out of childlike amazement, wanting to learn more. It’s an essential sentiment. However, learning a method of treatment with just that emotion is dangerous. Magic power is a powerful force, but using it incorrectly might lead to killing someone or even one’s own death. Concealing such risks and teaching only the appealing aspects is not something a teacher should do, regardless of the fading excitement from yesterday. There were things I needed to convey before the class started.
“That may be true, but…”
“Magic power has its benevolent aspects for people. However, it can be dangerous if used improperly. I believe I have provided explanations regarding magic and healing beforehand. It’s also written in the textbooks.”
Likely, they hadn’t been seriously considering it and hadn’t read the textbooks. They probably believed what Isaac had said about ‘magic power not existing.’ Perhaps, even after the selection, most of them might have been expecting to be taught a different, true method of treatment apart from magic power. Even if they had been reading the textbooks, few students seemed to believe it was true. However, they had witnessed the existence of magic power with their own eyes. So, they had no choice but to believe my words. The students swallowed audibly. Unlike yesterday, their expressions were serious. When one learns about something they were interested in or moved by and then confronts reality, they might lose interest. However, one cannot live based solely on admiration. Balancing the practical aspects with aspirations, reconciling with reality, and striving for ideals—that’s what life is about. What will they do? Will they give up upon hearing my words, lose interest, or something else?
“There is no dreamlike thing that only has benefits.
Even a knife, if used skillfully, can carve materials, but it can also harm oneself or others.
However, if you know how to use it and practice, you can avoid such harm.
Magic power is the same.
If I say this, it may only leave you with anxiety. However, it’s okay.
In case something happens, for the time when someone falls into lazy syndrome, we gathered this many people.
Look at the faces of the people around you.”
As I spoke, the students obediently looked around at the people nearby.
Not everyone, but most of them were moving their heads, trying to understand what I meant.
“Someone next to you, a friend, a stranger, family, lover, anyone.
If all of you can perform treatment, then anyone who falls into lazy syndrome can be cured.
That means you can help each other.
And please remember this one thing:
Even if everyone here were to fall into lazy syndrome, I will definitely cure all of you.
No matter how far away, no matter how dangerous the place, I will definitely go to each one of you and treat you.
Let’s make a vow. I will never abandon you and will heal you.
There is danger, but please rest assured. Remember this:
The people here can be your help.
And the fact that I am here.”
The eyes of the students, who had looked uneasy, gradually showed determination.
It wasn’t a complete resolution, but it seemed that some of their anxieties had been alleviated to some extent.
“Esharos-san, do you have any more questions?”
“Ah, um, no, that’s all.”
It seemed that she also had some level of satisfaction. However, anxiety would continue to linger. In fact, it should be that way.
Humans tend to deteriorate when their days become too mundane. It’s a different kind of laziness, distinct from the disease.
So, I wanted them to always remember that I am here. The students here are going to be my disciples. I don’t know much about them yet, and they don’t know much about me. There will be friction, and there is no trust yet. But… We have a connection, and we are spending time together.
If that’s the case, we shouldn’t waste this opportunity to spend meaningful time together, to build a friendship. I’ve met various people, and I’m here because I’ve been helped by many. So, I believe this encounter is also something precious.
“Now, let’s begin the class.”
Unlike the earlier greeting, the students, who seemed a bit nervous, turned their earnest gazes toward me. Feeling a sense of loveliness in their sincerity, I thought, ‘Is this the mindset of a teacher?'”
