Chapter 44: The Exiled Marquis’ Daughter and the Magical Wilderness, Part 7
Incantation differs from common magic in several ways.
It requires a special pronunciation for spells and uses a key phrase called ‘incantations’ to activate the magic. Unlike common magic, where the magic circle is constructed inside the body, incantation constructs it outside the body. For someone like me who can see magic, this is the most significant difference.
I watched the spear of light released from the huge magic circle constructed about ten meters above Shara’s head. Incantations boast incredible power, and among them, Lux Lance has exceptional piercing power and destructive force within its effect area.
Even in the church, which values learning the techniques of the gods, most people only know about it in theory. Few can use it with such skill that you could count them on one hand within the entire church. It’s unusual for a practitioner to use incantations at all.
Because—this power.
The spear of light struck the Forest Dragon head-on, piercing its head. For a moment, it stopped moving, then its entire body shook, and with a sharp crack, it vanished. Along with half of the Forest Dragon’s body.
It’s clearly not the kind of magic that a practitioner, who aims to heal people with recovery magic, should learn.
What was Shara thinking when she learned such a spell?
I looked at the self-proclaimed practitioner, Nun Shara. She was sitting on the ground, breathing heavily as if she had collapsed.
She seemed exhausted, likely because her magic power was temporarily depleted, leaving her breathless. However, her face showed satisfaction.
“Shin.”
Erika’s voice made me turn to face forward.
“It’s still standing?”
I muttered in disbelief.
The Forest Dragon, or rather its remnants, was bubbling with regenerating flesh, attempting to restore its body despite having lost not just its head but half of its body.
Blasting away half its body and still not being able to defeat it was unexpected. They say not to let your guard down even after decapitating a dragon, but this was beyond tough. Retreat was the only option.
Before I could make the decision, Erika moved.
“I’ve learned how to control the flames.”
With that, Erika smiled at me and swung her sword like a conductor’s baton. With a roar, the Forest Dragon was engulfed in a pillar of fire.
“As long as the magic stone doesn’t burn, it’s fine, right?”
Erika said this with a proud smile.

“I can’t help but feel some pity, even for a monster, meeting such an end.”
Shara, now standing firmly, seemed to have recovered her magic. Her expression was hard to read; I couldn’t tell if it was from exhaustion or disbelief.
“I don’t think it felt anything since it had no head.”
Erika, who had spent several minutes burning the regenerating Forest Dragon with a pillar of fire, showed no signs of fatigue. It’s no wonder she’s called a prodigy with sword and magic, given the immense magic power she must possess.
I was struggling to dig out the magic stone from the remains of the Forest Dragon, which, despite being half-blasted, was originally the size of a house. The magic stone was buried and hard to find.
“Shin, shall I help?”
It was Erika who offered.
“No, Erika, keep an eye out for any threats. I think we’re safe for now, but with the dragon gone, other monsters might come back.”
Well, we can handle them if they come back, but it’s better to be cautious. Oh, here it is.
I dug out the magic stone from the pile of debris and lifted it up. Its purple surface had intricate vein-like patterns.
Holding it above my head, I showed it to the others. Shara had a complex expression, as if she still couldn’t believe it was real, while Erika nodded with satisfaction, as if this result was expected.
I wondered what kind of expression I had.
At the very least, I probably looked like someone who knows this was no ordinary monster to defeat.
