Chapter 28: The Banished Marquis’ Daughter is Strong, Part 4
We reported to the little girl that we had defeated the monsters and then left the village.
Normally, we would collect the monsters’ fragments, but we left them behind as an apology for leaving the field full of holes.
The village chief would handle that part well.
Although not as valuable as magic stones, the fragments could still fetch a decent price. Since the Golden Ogres were large monsters, the value of three of them would be enough to compensate for the damage to the field.
Well, there wasn’t much left of one of them.
“By the way, was it okay to leave the village chief like that?”
“You mean about the request to the Adventurers’ Guild?”
“Yeah.”
Once the village was out of sight, Erika asked about the village chief’s lie.
“There wasn’t any proof. Reporting to the Adventurers’ Guild wouldn’t make a difference.”
“What about the testimony from that girl’s father?”
“He only said that to us. He’ll play dumb if the guild asks.”
What the village chief did was betray the goodwill of the adventurers’ guild. If the guild learns about a dangerous monster, they will issue a subjugation request on their own.
This is because it’s part of the guild’s principles.
The idea of the adventurers’ guild to defeat monsters for those without power is not just an idealistic slogan; they mean it.
“If we start pointing fingers, it would never end.”
Life in a farming village isn’t easy.
Many villages and settlements do the same thing.
The guild knows this, so even if someone reports it, it will likely be ignored.
Many adventurers and guild staff come from such villages.
“If you say so.”
Erika concluded without much insistence.

Although we ended up unexpectedly staying overnight in the village and technically failed the request, it wasn’t a complete disaster.
“Erm… this is…”
At the adventurers’ guild counter, a female staff member was stunned in front of the three Golden Ogre magic stones.
By the way, this was the petite female staff member who handled our adventurer registration. According to her name tag, her name was Lana.
“These are Golden Ogre magic stones.”
While our request technically failed, we had three Golden Ogre magic stones. The amount the guild would pay for them would be a sufficient reward.
“These are for an emergency subjugation request!?”
Lana, the guild staff member, shouted.
Magic stones harvested from monsters usually indicate their strength by their appearance. Even though guild staff see them all the time, what was so surprising?
“Yes, we’d like to sell these.”
I stated my request.
The Adventurers’ Guild handles the purchase of magic stones and materials obtained from monsters. The guild profits by selling these materials to merchants, which is one of its main sources of income.
“Why are you so calm? Three of them! You two, both rank one, defeated three Golden Ogres!?”
For some reason, she seemed angry.
“No way…”
Lana twisted in surprise, looking as if she’d seen something terrible.
“Are you planning to demand a special exception to raise your rank to seven because you defeated three Golden Ogres?”
“No, we’re not.”
Is she still going on about that?
“About the quest we took…”
I glanced at the magic stones.
“They’ll probably cancel it.”
That made Lana nod as if she understood.
“That must have been tough, huh?”
She offered some sympathy but didn’t press further, likely understanding the situation but not wanting to make an issue out of it.
“I have relatives in that village, so I’ll personally thank you for what you did.”
“In that case, could you give us a better price? My sword got damaged.”
Lana smoothly brushed it off, saying, “That’s a different matter.”
“But if you’re looking to buy a new sword, I can recommend a good shop.”
This was sufficient compensation since we were new in this town. A recommendation from a guild staff member would likely lead us to a reputable store.
“Alright, let’s proceed with the sale then.”
“Understood.”
As she prepared the magical appraisal tools and documents, Lana asked cautiously,
“You’re really not going to demand a Rank 7 promotion, right?”
I just shrugged in response.
