Chapter 18: The Banished Marquis’ Daughter Becomes an Adventurer, Part 4
I was honestly at a loss due to the attitude of the female guild staff, but I couldn’t just leave, so I asked again.
“I want to register as an adventurer.”
The woman’s reaction was a bit better this time.
“Y-Yes, we can handle that here.”
She was stumbling over her words.
Is she really okay?
“Then, I’d like to register both myself and her as adventurers.”
I wondered if the Orcula Kingdom used the same adventurer registration forms.
As I waited for the guild staff’s response, I noticed she was staring at my face.
This situation happened just a moment ago too.
I was about to speak to prompt her, but she spoke first.
“Um! May I ask for your names?”
Wouldn’t she find out during the registration anyway?
Thinking it might be part of the procedure, I answered.
“She is Erika Longdagger, and I’m Shin Longdagger.”
I swear, I just said our names normally.
I wasn’t trying to be difficult, I wasn’t angry, and I didn’t have a threatening expression.
Maybe I had a weird smile when I said Erika Longdagger, but that was it, I swear.
However, the guild staff’s reaction was completely unexpected.
“Longdagger! The ‘Unbefitting Longdagger’! So you are really the Longdagger!”
*
Facing the suddenly shouting guild staff, I felt a wave of anxiety.
The “Unbefitting Longdagger”—Merseja also called me that.
Back then, I forgot to ask what it meant and let it go. But hearing it from a guild staff in another country made me really curious.
Could it be that my unbefitting feelings for Erika are widely known?
I do think my feelings are unbefitting.
The second son of a poor viscount liking the beloved daughter of a marquis, who is also the kingdom’s chancellor, is obviously out of my league.
I’ve never voiced it, but anyone can see it’s a high hurdle and unbefitting.
The Adventurers’ Guild is said to have its own information network. Sometimes, it knows things even the country doesn’t.
Could it be that this network knows about my unbefitting feelings too?
I was more impressed by the guild’s information network than scared.
But the fact that my feelings for Erika are known in another country is… mortifying.
“Excuse me, could I have a word?”
As I was stunned by how the knowledge of my unbefitting feelings had crossed borders, Erika stepped forward.
“What do you mean by ‘Unbefitting Longdagger’?”
Huh? Is she angry?
Her voice and aura are tense.
“Hee!”
The guild staff woman froze upon hearing Erika’s voice.
“I am also a Longdagger. If that was an insult… very well, I shall accept your challenge.”
The woman, now sweating profusely, seemed overwhelmed.
I understand the feeling, but I wondered if this was appropriate behavior for a guild staff member.
Adventurers are generally the type who risk their lives and rely on violence to make a living.
And we’re obviously much younger, being only sixteen this year.
You can’t just freeze up every time someone is a bit annoyed. Though, to be fair, if Erika was angry, I’d also prefer to stay away.
“What do you mean by that?”
Setting aside what exactly she meant, her tone became noticeably colder.
“No, no, no, no! It’s not an insult at all!”
The guild staff’s reaction was almost exaggerated in its desperation.
“The ‘Unbefitting Longdagger’ is a famous nickname, and there is respect and awe associated with it. It’s not an insult!”
A nickname?
I tilted my head in confusion behind Erika.
It’s true that some adventurers earn nicknames.
My mentor has one, and so do my fellow apprentices.
But I was sure I didn’t have one.
Those are special titles given to unique individuals.
Someone as ordinary as me shouldn’t have one.
Wait, does this mean my unbefitting feelings have spread so widely that I’ve earned a nickname?
How embarrassing! W-What should I do? This is so embarrassing.
“Is that so?”
Erika sounded surprised.
The woman nodded quickly.
“Yes! Yes! It’s very famous!”
The woman, noticing Erika’s improved mood, continued eagerly. Wait, is she about to explain why? Is she going to say that my unbefitting feelings for Erika are so well-known they’ve crossed borders?
I had to stop this, but the guild staff woman kept talking.
“It’s well-known that the ‘Unbefitting Longdagger’ is a fellow apprentice of ‘Elsa the Impaler’ and a student of ‘Kind Barbara’.”
…What?
I was baffled by the sudden mention of my fellow apprentice and mentor.
“They even asked us to take care of the ‘Unbefitting Longdagger’ when they come to register.”
…Sigh.
I looked up at the sky.
I could guess what happened.
What were those two doing, making threats like that?
