Let me be a mob! - Chapter 38- Silvie\'s shortcomings...
[Silvie’s POV:]
I have always been a curious child, as per what the people around have regarded me. Someone who loves to know about everything new my eyes land on. Every bright thing became a prime subject of curiosity and the things which I cannot get a full grasp on were my greatest motivation to never stop on the path of learning.
My childhood was….complicated…one? Yeah, it’s the right word. I did not have a simple life until I reached the Excalius Academy. I have lived as a source of disgust and subject of bullying because of my half-trait of humanity and the other half belonging to elves. True, I never got to decide why the way I was born like this but I never complained either since having a life where I could learn new things and meet new people was more than enough to feel gratified for my existence.
Though half of me is human, I inherited a trait that very few elves carry and pass on their lineage. These special eyes of mine help me detect the spirits around me and also tell them apart. I cannot detail their physical form but the differences in their shades and the size of their energy signature were hefty enough for me to know about the spiritual reality I have always been fascinated about.
I never held the talent to get in contact with these divine beings but I was already fortunate enough to be able to see them. Though it was a feat to get contracted with a spirit, that would have let me get accepted by both human and elven sides, I never really repented over it for not being able to form a contract. Only pure-blood elves and some heroes of the legends were able to attain such achievements. And I was neither of the two.
And I believed in the Excalius Academy there would be none who could be regarded as legends as well either since the practice of spirituality has long been lost in human history. Only the books kept in the depth of ancient libraries and museums held the proof that humans also could interact with spiritual divinity.
But I was proven wrong…
I never could have imagined that I would find a boy, not having any fascinating rumors about him nor any background to create a remembrance in my memory, would have the favors of spirits to the point, I was not able to take my eyes off him. He was a living Spirit magnet who did not have to call for the divine beings to bless him….rather they were always present around him like he was under their protection, which was utterly baffling and inexplicable in any storybook I have previously read.
Someone having such a high affinity with the spirits that he was getting flocked by them was truly unheard of. Only some old elves who have practiced divinity for a long time could pull such a miracle yet in front of me, even right now, Jin Carter was calling forth the wind spirits with the chants that he was not supposed to be aware of.
“GO!!”
As he yelled, I felt myself moving even though I was still in a daze and awe upon witnessing how joyously the wind spirits were lending their strength and bestowing their blessing for Jin to imbue his weapon and slash the barrier to create a small opening.
I ran along with others and before I could realize it, we all were out of the barrier in mere blinks. Considering the fact everyone was superhuman and very elite among them as well, it was given that the duration of ten-second Jin provided was more than enough for everyone to evacuate.
“Come on, Jin!”
Aiden shouted in slight anxiety for Jin to cross the barrier as well. For a second I felt my throat going numb and my heart escalating when I saw his weapons disappearing and his arms swelling because of the exhaustion he must be feeling because of the overdose of spiritual blessing.
Thankfully, Jin made a short sprint before he jumped through the gap which closed just after the tip of Jin’s feet crossed through and landed on the ground in front of us.
“KHAKKK!!!”
Jin muffledly cried and writhed on the ground as I saw his veins convulsing and his arms turning reddish brown due to overheating. He looked so much in pain that I felt my eyes moistening at the sight. I already saw some symptoms of a blessing overdose when I first saw him after I lost my teammates but now when he had to use his divinity once again…I could not even conceive how much it was hurting him.
I have read in books that the pain of overheating because of blessings feels like thick nails piercing your bare skin and tearing your muscles. You would feel each fiber of your body burning under the heat which normal humans could melt under. Blood grows heavy and senses dull down to numbness. Everything around becomes nothing but a blur and the person suffering from such consequences could even beg for death rather than suffer from such a heavy burden.
I am not sure if I was in the place of Jin I would have handled that much pain and wouldn’t have used my dagger to instantly cut my throat. Even his tears were rolling and blood spilling out his mouth because of the tongue he must have injured, Jin was not shouting nor was he asking for help.
Relatively only three seconds had passed since Jin landed and the shock of his current state was too horrifying that Fiona seemingly forgot that she had the right equipment to help Jin. And about me…then I was also standing among the crowd, seeing Jin struggling like a fish who has been put off its habitation. I was too powerless and reserved to offer a hand even though I knew if not for him, I, and maybe all of us would not have survived.
Fiona helped Jin to lean on her arms so he doesn’t choke on the potion before she tore open the lid with her teeth in great urgency and poured the liquid down Jin’s throat without delaying a single blink. Considering Jin’s state I thought he may not be able to swallow the cure for his pain but miraculous as he seemed until now, Jin was able to gulp it down somehow.
Thankfully, he began to calm down after downing the potion but Fiona didn’t leave his side and supported him as Jin huffed heavily in her arms.
“Isn’t it strange?”
“What is?”
Among the students, some of them had already begun chatting about the situation, having entirely gotten over Jin’s condition within seconds even though they have yet to say a single thanks to the person who saved their lives just now. But I was no different so I couldn’t complain.
“I mean, neither Professor Lisa nor any other security in charge is present around even though around ten hours have passed since the commencement of the trials. Not to talk about that the sensors present around the forest would have notified the teacher that we were facing a crisis.”
It was definitely a reason for concern they were talking since the sensors I am aware of consisted of high-ranking artifacts which were spread all around the jungles where students get involved. Not to talk about the S-rank professor and one of the strongest in the nation, Professor Lisa who also didn’t seem to be around as well, signified two things.
Either they have lost hope in the students and let us die in the barricade which humanly was unthinkable to break. This one was absurd but not entirely impossible. The other reason I could think of was that maybe another threat much larger than what we have been facing the past half a day has arisen and needed Lisa’s attention which was why she wasn’t around.
I have a feeling it was the second case but I hoped my hypothesis is wrong and nothing sort of more problem-causing situations springs up.
Soon others also began to mutter among themselves, rising the length of their volume when suddenly Aiden stepped forward and in a strong tone brought a halt to the arguments.
“Can we stop chatting at this place and think of a way to return to Academy, for now? I am not sure about you guys but facing another high-ranking monster just because you all can’t put tape on your mouths is not something I deeply prefer. So for god sake, speak less and think more.”
It was disrespectful and could have caused a fight among the students considering how most of the students in our sections belong to high society or were sons/daughters of some war hero. And seeing their growls and sensing the rise of intent in the air aligned with my perception from which I measure people.
However, thankfully no one tried to create a scene here. Maybe it was because Aiden was too strong for them to face or his words had caused them to remember something which would be causing them a nightmare for a long period.
“Hey, are you okay?”
I was brought out of my daze by a hand over my shoulder before I saw Royal Highness Dia looking in my direction with concern unhidden in her eyes. I couldn’t fathom how someone of that ranking could be such a kind person.
“Y-Y-Yeah I am fine. Thanks for asking.”
Despite thinking a lot and blabbering tons of comments inside my mind I still fail to utter words without stuttering and averting my gaze from the listener. It was the effect of what I have seen in the past and what kind of people I have grown up with.
My gaze fell on Jin for a moment as I saw him resting his head on Fiona’s lap and his breathing seemingly calmer than before. His arms were still burnt and he was trembling a lot to be called healthy but overall he wasn’t in any fatal danger for now.
I wanted to use my skill on him but remembering the wariness he carried for me, created a boundary between us that I knew I have to break somehow and teach him things that could maybe save his life in the future. Call it fascination and sheer interest in spirits, but there was something that told me that I have to talk to Jin somehow and let him know that I wasn’t his enemy.
But for now, it would be better to leave this place for which I had an idea which I decided to propose. However, I felt fluctuating mana suddenly around us before we all turned our heads toward the new appearance standing toward our right with her hands on her knees and breathing unsteadily. Her clothes were torn from places and burnt marks around those spots.
In normal circumstances seeing a beautiful lady, as Miss Lisa was, most of the boys would have enjoyed the display but not now since witnessing such a powerful figure beaten down and brought into such a state raised an alarm which I guess no one was ready to face.
“Pr-Professo…?”
Aiden walked forward with hesitation and anxiety blended in his voice before the lady lifted her head and announced something which unfortunately proved my theory to be correct.
“A-*huff*Academy….under attack….”
