Chapter 2: Awakening ②
After completing the tests with Dr. Kudo, I was brought back to my room.
I said I was fine during the questioning, but my body felt heavy, and I couldn’t walk on my own, so I was moved in a wheelchair.
Pushing the wheelchair was the slender beauty with vermilion hair tied in a ponytail, Akari Yoshizawa. Even from behind, a faint, pleasant fragrance wafted with her movements. She’s energetic, polite, and gives off the vibe of a fresh rookie nurse. Apparently, she and the other senior nurse are assigned to take care of me.
“Izumi-san, good job with the tests. We’ll be back at your room soon, so you can rest.”
“Ah, thank you.”
The MRI was surprisingly cramped, and even with earplugs, I could hear the noises, which was honestly a bit scary. They also put some device on my chest to check my heart’s echo, and the whole process took a while, leaving me exhausted. I didn’t expect just getting tested would tire me out this much.
“Your mother will be visiting during visiting hours, I hear.”
“My mother, huh…”
Apparently, my mother is coming, but… what kind of person is she? She’ll probably be shocked when she learns I’ve lost my memories…
“S-Sorry… I wasn’t being considerate…”
“N-No, don’t worry about it…”
Yoshizawa-san, who kindly brought up the topic, seemed to deflate as she remembered my amnesia.
I’d love to change the subject to lighten the mood, but since I just woke up and know nothing, I can’t come up with anything clever to say.
“My room is really spacious and nice, isn’t it? Are all the rooms in this hospital like this?”
The room’s luxurious, hotel-like decor doesn’t seem like something an average person could afford. Is my family in this world wealthy? Or is this hospital catered to the rich?
“Yes! All the rooms in the men’s ward are like that!”
Maybe because it was an approachable topic, Yoshizawa-san’s voice regained its energy.
But what’s a men’s ward? Why are men separated?
The goddess said my general knowledge from my past life should still be intact, but I’m completely clueless.
“Um, what’s the men’s ward?”
I interrupted the flow of conversation again. Amnesia is really inconvenient… If this world’s common sense is completely different from my past life, I could be in serious trouble.
From what I saw of the hospital during the tests, it didn’t seem that different from my past life, so I think I’m okay for now.
“As the name suggests, it’s a ward dedicated to male patients. Our hospital has excellent security and facilities, so please rest assured!”
That’s not what I meant… Maybe I phrased my question poorly.
“Why do they need to separate men into their own ward?”
“Um… Izumi-san, have you forgotten about that too?”
“Forgotten about what?”
Her vague pronoun doesn’t give me any clues. But it’s clear that I’m missing some critical knowledge. I need to learn this properly, or life after discharge could be scary.
“Oh, we’re almost at your room.”
I was about to ask for details about “that,” but it seems we’ve run out of time.
When we entered the room, the other nurse, Shiori Nakano, was waiting.
She’s a beautiful woman with deep maroon hair tied in a bun, taller than Yoshizawa-san and with a more pronounced figure. She’s Yoshizawa-san’s senior from their university days, and together, this senior-junior duo is taking care of me. It looks like she was cleaning my bed while I was at the tests.
“Welcome back, Izumi-sama. Good job with the tests. Good work, Akari-chan.”
Being praised by a beautiful woman feels really nice.
With their help, I moved to the bed, and they used the bed’s reclining function to prop me up so I could talk more easily. I’m a bit annoyed I didn’t notice this feature when I woke up—it took a lot of energy just to sit up earlier.
“Senpai, can we talk for a moment?”
Yoshizawa-san called Nakano-san, and they started talking in the back of the room.
They’re probably discussing my test results or condition. I want to know the results too, but nothing will happen until Dr. Kudo arrives.
“Izumi-san, the doctor will be here soon, so please wait a little longer.”
“Oh, okay. Um… could I have some water?”
“Yes, of course.”
The tests took longer than expected, and my throat was dry, so I asked Nakano-san for some water.
As I sipped the water and took a moment to relax, Dr. Kudo entered the room.
“Izumi-san, we have the detailed test results, so I’ll go over them with you.”
Her fuji-purple hair was tied up in a chignon, and through the gap in her white coat, I could see a turtleneck sweater that accentuated her figure. She’s still wearing the glasses she had during the tests—did she rush over here?
She sat on a chair beside the bed, crossing her stocking-clad legs, which extended from her tight skirt.
“First, I’ll explain why you were brought here. You were in a traffic accident and transported to this hospital. You fractured your right arm and suffered a severe head injury, which put you in a coma.”
I see. Maybe I was hit by a car from the right, breaking my arm, and then thrown, hitting my head? If I hadn’t reincarnated, I probably would’ve died in that accident.
“You remained asleep for over ten days and woke up today—that’s the general timeline. Are you following so far?”
“Yes, I understand.”
Ten days of sleep… No wonder Nakano-san and Yoshizawa-san were so flustered. It’s like a dead person suddenly got up.
“The test results show no significant issues beyond the injuries and weakness from the accident… but, as you’ve noticed, you have memory impairment, likely caused by the head injury.”
“Yes…”
“There’s a chance you might recover some memories over time, but it’s not very likely. We’ll conduct further tests with a specialist later to determine the next steps. For now, we’ll focus on treating your fractured right arm. That just means keeping it immobilized until the bone heals.”
“Got it…”
The chance of recovering memories… The goddess said my memories were gone because my soul was erased, so the chance is probably zero. They don’t exist to begin with…
“It’ll be inconvenient with your dominant arm out of commission, but if you need anything, don’t hesitate to use the nurse call like before. If your condition changes, a doctor will come right away.”
“Izumi-san, since things were hectic earlier, let me introduce myself properly. I’m Shiori Nakano, your assigned nurse.”
“And I’m Akari Yoshizawa, also your assigned nurse!”
“We’ll primarily be taking care of you, so feel free to use the nurse call. One of us is usually on duty, but occasionally, another nurse might respond, so please keep that in mind.”
“Got it. Thank you, Nakano-san, Yoshizawa-san, and Dr. Kudo.”
“You can count on us!”
Yoshizawa-san responded enthusiastically but stumbled over her words, turning bright red. Her clumsiness lightened the heavy atmosphere in the room.
“Well, I’ll be going now. Izumi-san, take care. Shiori-chan, can you come with me? Yoshizawa-san, please look after Izumi-san.”
“Yes! Thank you, Dr. Kudo!”
The cheerful mood didn’t last long, as Dr. Kudo and Nakano-san had other work to attend to. Nakano-san followed her out quietly, leaving the room.
