Chapter 75: Dinner with Minato-chan: Pre-Employment Orientation
The blaring of my phone’s alarm snapped me awake. Checking the time, I quickly changed and fixed my hair.
“Alright, off to the family restaurant!”
I stepped out, locking the door behind me. As I clattered down the stairs, Cui swooped down from the sky, landing on my head.
“Whoa…! Oi, Cui, don’t spook me like that!”
‘You’re hardly spooked. Let’s go.’
“You’re coming too…?”
Cui’s motives are still a mystery to me. Well, some parts are clear enough.
‘You’re meeting Kokuryouin Minato, right? I want to see how you’ll conquer that girl up close.’
“Don’t say weird stuff!”
I mean, sure, I want to get with Minato…! She’s totally my type—a classic Japanese beauty! But…!
“For your information, Kurumi’s my girlfriend here…!”
‘? Kurumi’s your girlfriend, so just screw Minato whenever you feel like it.’
“That’s not how it works!”
Tch…! My less-than-chaste track record’s making it hard to argue back properly…!
Cui doesn’t get the whole “don’t sleep with others if you have a girlfriend” thing.
To be fair, I’m not exactly pure either. I’m all over Erinabel and the others in the other world.
It’s harder to use ero-skills in Japan, and that’s why I hesitate with Minato. It’s all in my head, really.
I’m way more forward in the other world. Probably because I’ve compartmentalized it as my “fantasy sex life.”
‘Hmph. Just use Forced Arousal already…’
“You’re really into Minato, huh…”
She’s tagging along just for this. Cui must be dying to see Minato writhing in pleasure.
‘Not just Minato. I like Kurumi too. And in the other world, I’ve got my eye on Amberta and Cerialis. Hurry up and screw them too.’
“What a wicked bird…”
And I’m the guy living it up with this bird’s ero-skills. No way I’m stopping this lifestyle now! Sensitivity Amplification, tentacle summoning—both sound thrilling…!
Feeling a slight rush to my lower half, I arrived at the family restaurant. It’s a decently famous chain known for its signature Fist Hamburger.
“Oi, Cui. It’s a restaurant, so get in the bag.”
‘Tch. Annoying.’
Cui obediently slipped into my shoulder bag. I took a seat and pulled out my phone.
Just as I opened the messaging app to tell Minato I’d arrived—
“You’re a bit early. Impressive.”
“…Yo, been a while.”
Minato was standing right beside me. When did she even get there!?
“Move over.”
As instructed, I slid deeper into the booth, but instead of sitting across from me, Minato sat right next to me.
“Hey, what gives? Don’t people usually sit across from each other?”
“Where I sit is my choice, isn’t it? If you don’t like it, you move.”
“It’s not that I don’t like it!”
Stubborn…! Such a stubborn ojou-sama…! Not that I mind, really!
Minato must’ve gone home from school, as she was in casual clothes. A slightly short miniskirt, super cute. Her clothes and shoes looked pricey too.
(And she’s got it with her… the sword…)
Like that brat from before, she carried a long, crimson cloth bag. Definitely a Japanese sword.
“It’s on the company’s dime, so order whatever you want.”
“For real!?”
Heck yeah!
I’ve got no pride issues about a younger girl treating me, so I unhesitatingly ordered the double Fist Hamburger. Minato went with tempura soba.
“Oh, right. Here. Stones I got from my last trip.”
I pulled a wooden box from my bag and handed it to Minato. She opened it immediately to check the contents.
“…Impressive as always. How do you keep finding stones infused with such unique power…?”
“Well… let’s just say I’ve been through a lot.”
“Fine. I’ll transfer the payment now.”
Minato took out her phone, tapped a few times, and showed me the screen.
“I just sent 150,000 yen.”
“Thanks! That’s a big help!”
Now I’ve got about 450,000 yen to play with…! And this meal’s on the company’s tab, plus Minato’s cute…! Honestly, this is a white-collar dream job!
As we chatted, our food arrived. While savoring the juicy Fist Hamburger, I remembered something.
“So, the other day, some Tényōshū guy attacked me. Kept ranting about why I’m Minato-sama’s attendant.”
“I’ve heard. The Mahara family’s eldest son caused a selfish commotion.”
As expected, Minato already knew. She ate her tempura soba with refined grace.
“…Just to confirm, the sword Mahara was using…”
“Yup, I’ve got it. Planning to sell it somewhere as compensation.”
“You’re truly an outlier in both thinking and ability… Where and how are you even planning to sell it…?”
Is that so? Well, a Japanese sword’s too much for a brat’s toy.
“The day after tomorrow, you’ll come to Rishinkan, where Tényōshū gathers. Could you bring the sword? I’ll tell the Mahara family to buy it from you.”
“That’d be great. And if they attack again, I’ll just take another sword. Infinite profit!”
Money’s never enough…! I want to move out, and I need cash to unlock Cui’s ero-skills…!
“So, what did you think of the Mahara family’s eldest son?”
“Like… how strong he was?”
“Yes.”
I recalled that night. I did feel some kind of intensity from him…
“Hmm, well, he was strong, I guess, but his movements were predictable, and his sword swings were slow and simple. It was like he was begging for a counterattack.”
“I see. Impressive…”
My body moved on reflex back then. Must be the perks of Cui’s contract.
“How can someone who can’t use Kyōshin be that strong? I’m very curious.”
“Thanks, I guess.”
“Just so you know, the Mahara heir is a national kendo champion.”
“Huh… Really…?”
Well, kendo and real sword fighting are different beasts, I suppose.
After we finished eating, Minato got to the main point.
“We’ll soon have you start night patrols and training in earnest, but first, you need to learn the basics about Oni.”
She handed me a thick book. I already had a bad feeling.
“This book covers Oni ranks, Oni Eye techniques, and basic info on Oni energy. Study as much as you can by the day after tomorrow. And never show it to anyone else.”
“Ugh…”
Knew it. I thought Oni ranks didn’t concern me when I heard about them before.
Well, the pay’s good, so I guess I can deal with this…
“So, how many Oni do you guys fight in a month?”
“…Real Oni like Harakara are rare. We usually deal with people who haven’t fully become Oni—those whose minds are corrupted by Oni energy.”
“Hmm…?”
Minato elaborated on what she’d mentioned before.
People harbor emotions like desire, anger, regret, or resentment. Oni energy feeds on those, gradually corrupting them. Susceptibility varies by individual.
“When they start gaining Oni powers, they’re ranked in eight tiers, from lowest to highest: Tōki (Frozen Oni), Hakki (Repel Oni), Kyūki (Nine Oni), Enki (Swallow Oni), Hakuki (White Oni), Gōki (Roaring Oni), Reiki (Foothill Oni), Shinki (Dragon Oni). From Hakuki upward, they can use Oni Eye techniques, and at that point, they can’t return to being human.”
Those at Hakuki or above are considered “true Oni,” and their lifespans surpass humans’.
“Conversely, no matter how much Oni power they have, those at Enki or below can still be saved.”
“Even if they’re pretty corrupted?”
“Yes. It depends on the degree, but knock them out, and Kyōshin can purify them.”
“Using Oni energy to purge Oni energy, huh…”
“Exactly. Tényōshū has honed how to confront Oni energy over its long history.”
I’m not exactly involved in that part, and I can’t use Kyōshin. If Minato says so, that’s how it is.
“Got it. So my job’s to knock out the corrupted ones, right?”
“Yes. And I’ll purify their Oni energy. Simple, isn’t it?”
“Yup.”
Pretty straightforward. And it helps maintain public safety, I guess.
Tényōshū also takes on VIP protection gigs, apparently. With deep ties to the government, they get a lot of those.
Minato kept explaining Tényōshū and Oni basics. Most of it was new, so listening alone was exhausting.
Glancing out the window, I noticed it was already pitch dark.
