Chapter 81 – The Fun Culture Festival 1
——Reo’s Side, the Culture Festival Begins——
Culture festival.
This high school’s culture festival is held over two days, October 25th and 26th, and many people from outside the school come to visit.
During the festival, the student council is generally allowed to act freely, though they still need to keep an eye on things to some extent.
So, on Friday, October 25th, the first day of the festival, I was busily helping my class prepare.
I put on a tattered white coat that Nanami had made, and a nostalgic silver wig. I made a face that looked like I might have killed someone, trying to create as terrifying an expression as possible, and went to show it to Nanami.
“How does it look?”
“Eekkk!! You really surprised me… Come to think of it, Reo-kun used to look that scary…”
“…That’s what you’d call the right person for the job.”
When I showed her my expression, Nanami flinched for a moment, and once she confirmed that it was me, she had a look of relief on her face. If even Nanami reacted like that, I’d be unstoppable with people who don’t know me.
Nanami, too, was looking nostalgic. Her outfit was similar to a nurse’s uniform, but she was wearing a heavy wig that covered her eyes, making her recent beauty aura completely disappear. However, the destructiveness of her chest still can’t be hidden.
“…As expected of Nanami. It suits you.”
“Ehehe… You too, Reo-kun…”
“Okay, come on now, stop being so lovey-dovey and get to work.”
While I was talking with Nanami, Himezaki came over in a blood-stained hospital gown to warn me to keep my hands moving.
“Ibuse-kun is strong, so there’s plenty of work to do. Nanacchi, help everyone get changed. They were calling for you earlier.”
“Eh, really? Sorry, I’ll be right there!”
After hearing what Himezaki said, Nanami hurried to the classroom where the girls were getting changed. I tried to help out as Himezaki told me, but suddenly I was poked in the side.
“What is it?”
“Did you make your decision?”
“…I pretty much had it decided from the start.”
“…Popular guys sure are different.”
Himezaki spoke with a slightly sarcastic tone, trying to hide something as she reached for a prop box nearby. Seeing that the box looked a bit heavy, I was about to help her, but someone else beat me to it.
“I’ll carry it.”
“Huh… oh, okay…”
Yoshimoto appeared out of nowhere, easily lifting the box and efficiently getting to work.
Watching Yoshimoto, Himezaki stood there dazed, so I turned the question back on her as payback.
“Did you make your decision?”
“…It was decided from the beginning. The rest is up to him.”
“Then there’s no problem. Don’t make it more complicated.”
“…Shut up.”
Himezaki, clearly embarrassed, lightly kicked me in the shin and went to help Yoshimoto with his work. I’m not that bad at reading the atmosphere that I’d get in between them, so I decided just to help another classmate who was having trouble with their work.
——Sakura’s Side, Scary Things Are Scary——
Soon after the start of the first day of the culture festival. I took Shiori-san and came to the front of Reo-senpai’s class.
“It’ll be fine… It’ll be fine…”
“If you’re that scared, I think you should give it up.”
“I’m not scared!!”
“I see.”
Reo-senpai’s class had set up a haunted house. I’d heard about it from Noa-san, who told me their shift, so I thought I’d drop by and check it out. Of course, my class had a café, and there had been a fierce battle over shifts with Akari… but I’ve always been good at rock-paper-scissors.
Still, I was scared to come alone. If I invite a friend, I’m sure they’ll tease me about Reo-senpai. Noa-san was busy working, so she couldn’t come. In the end, I managed to persuade Shiori-san to come with me. Right now, I’m holding Shiori-san’s hand as tight as I can while waiting for our turn.
“Okay, next person~”
“Yes. Okay, let’s go, Sakura-chan.”
“Please don’t let go! Hold me the whole time, okay?!”
“Yeah, I got it. Don’t worry.”
The receptionist called us, and we both went inside. Inside, we were walking along a narrow path as the walls were partitioned off with cardboard boxes and such. I guess it was made to be a maze, but… I could hear some strange mechanical sounds… and groaning noises…
“Shiori-san, hurry! Let’s go quickly!”
“Wait. We have to solve the mystery too.”
Shiori-san was dutifully solving the mystery, matching the paper she’d received from the receptionist with the code-like thing written on the cardboard wall.
“Hmm… it’s this way.”
“Hurry! Hurry!”
I urged Shiori-san on as we moved forward. I don’t want to think about what would happen if we chose the wrong path. I don’t even need to meet Reo-senpai at this point! I can just ask him to show me a photo later! This is too scary——
“Raarghhh!!!”
“Kyaaaaahhhh!!!!”
I was startled by the sudden loud voice from behind me. At that moment, I was no longer able to think rationally, screaming at the top of my lungs and running towards the exit to get away from the scene.
“Nanami. I’m sure I didn’t choose the wrong path.”
“……Noa-chan told me to scare you. Please believe me.”
“Sigh… You’d better treat me to something later.”
“Yes…”
……
…
After being scared out of my wits, I rushed forward, completely ignoring the puzzles and just kept going. Luckily, I kept choosing the right paths and was safe so far. As I passed through the next checkpoint, thinking I might make it to the end…
“……Huh?”
It was a dead end. Does that mean I took the wrong path? But no one was jumping out to scare me. Confused, I decided to turn back——
“Welcome.”
“Huaaa?!”
When I turned around, someone was standing right in front of me. Where did he even hide with a body like that? I couldn’t see his face clearly, but he was terrifying. His eyes were glowing red, and he was holding a syringe.
“Well, look what I’ve found here. You seem like you’d make a good test subject. It would be much appreciated if you don’t resist——”
“I’M SORRYYYYYYY!!!!!”
I was so scared that I apologized profusely as I darted past the man and ran desperately through the maze again.
By the time I came to, I was in the hallway, panting and half crying.
“…Did you have fun?”
“I’m never coming again!!!!!!”
Shiori-san, who came out after me, teased me, and I couldn’t help but shout in response.
By the way, I heard later that the haunted house was a huge success thanks to my screams.
Not that I’m happy about it at all.
——Noa’s Side, Everyone’s Student Council President——
“Thank you, Onee-san!!”
“You’re welcome. Don’t get lost again.”
“Yes!!!”
Before lunch, I was taking care of a lost child in the student council room. The parent came to pick him up right away and was very grateful.
Still, being a student council president is very exhausting. I realized this firsthand while preparing for the culture festival. Shiori-senpai has helped me so many times.
Grrr…
“I’m hungry.”
I haven’t eaten anything since the festival began. Every time I tried to grab something to eat, a problem would pop up right in front of me. I don’t think I’ll have the strength to last if I don’t put something in my mouth soon. As I was thinking that, the door to the student council room opened by itself.
“Oh, found you.”
“Good job, Noa-chan~”
Reo-kun and Nanami-chan came in with various meals in their hands and started arranging the food they had on my desk. Yakisoba, crepes, takoyaki… everything smelled so delicious.
“Thank you… How did you get all this?”
“We finished our class shifts, and while we were looking for you, people from different classes kept calling out to us.”
“‘Please give this to our student council president!’ they said.”
“I see.”
Everyone’s so kind. I almost started crying. I was so happy.
“…Well, that’s it for me then~”
As I was overwhelmed with joy, Nanami-chan quickly tried to leave the student council room. I could understand why. But…
“Hey Nanami-chan. Do you want to eat together?”
“Eh? Is that okay?”
“Yeah. We’re friends, right?”
“…Yes!”
Nanami-chan looked overjoyed as she sat down in Reo-kun’s seat. But then, Reo-kun, looking uncomfortable, started trying to sneak out of the room next.
“Well, I’ll just…”
“Oh no you don’t! Reo-kun, stay. In fact, why don’t you feed me? I’m tired, you know.”
“No need to feel awkward around us. After all, both of us are Reo-kun’s girlfriends~”
“Yeah, exactly!”
“…Alright, I’ll take you up on that.”
And so the three of us decided to have an early lunch.
We talked about Sakura screaming at the top of her lungs in the haunted house, how Yoshimoto-kun and Himezaki-san seemed to be getting along well, and how many people intentionally got the final riddle wrong in order to see Reo-kun. It was a lighthearted, fun time filled with nothing but laughter.
