Chapter 25 – Now There Are Three
Friday, July 19th.
In the student council room during lunch break.
One more member has been added to this space that we were just renting.
“Hey, Ibuse-kun. By the way, did you watch the anime we talked about yesterday?”
“Of course.”
“Eh, um… how was it?”
“…Amazing.”
“…! Right?! I knew it, I knew you would understand, Ibuse-kun!!”
Nanami’s eyes sparkled as she sat across from me. Ever since two days ago, we’ve been meeting here in the student council room to talk about anime and manga. Nanami seemed delighted that I had gotten into her favorite series, eagerly sharing recommendations one after another. Since I hadn’t engaged in any otaku activities since being in this body, I found myself watching anime and reading manga whenever I had free time since yesterday.
“But with the way it ended, do you think…?”
“…!! Yes!! There’s a movie coming out! And it’s this summer!!”
“No way, no way… Are you serious…?”
“If you’d like, we could go toge… Ah… um…”
Nanami stopped midway through her sentence, I guess she blurted it out impulsively. But I want to see the movie too. And I want to talk about it as soon as I finish watching it. So I decided to invite her instead.
“Hey, Kinoshita.”
“Y-yes!”
“I’d feel pretty out of place at an anime movie by myself, you know? I’d appreciate it if you came with me.”
“…Of course! I’d love to!”
Nanami replied with a big smile to my invitation. She’s really an angel. Looking at her from the front, I think she’s really cute. No wonder otakus get the wrong idea. If I hadn’t been rejected by her the other day, I might have fallen for her too.
“By the way, Ibuse-kun. How is Akari-chan doing?”
“She seems to be doing well. The day after tomorrow is the main event… I think she’ll be back by Monday.”
Akari hasn’t shown up in the student council room since that day. According to her, it’s because she’s “restraining her Senpai cravings,” whatever that means.
By the way, I’ve already told her everything about what’s been going on with Nanami. As expected, she yelled at me over the phone, “It’s always about the boobs, isn’t it! You’re bringing in more girls! You pervert!!”
“I see. Then things will be lively again.”
“Be careful, Kinoshita. She’ll probably cling to you a lot.”
“Ahaha…”
That said, I don’t think I’ll have much time left to spend here comfortably. Apparently there will be a student council election after summer vacation, and if the President changes, I doubt we’ll be able to hang out here anymore. It’s okay during fall, but what about in the winter? Well, the cafeteria is okay.
“Thanks for the meal. It was delicious as always.”
After eating the lunch Shiori gave me, I quickly cleaned up and got up from my seat.
“Hmm? Do you have something to do?”
“Not really, just… restroom and preparing for the next class.”
“I see. See you next week then.”
“Yeah.”
I bowed to Shiori and Nanami and left the student council room. Nanami didn’t say anything, but she waved her hand and gestured “Bye, bye.”
……
…
“Ahh…”
As I went to the bathroom to relieve myself, I think back on what has happened so far.
Things are going okay for now. Although a little bit of time has passed, there’s no sign of anything happening with Akari or Shiori. Maybe having Ibuse Reo around has helped, at least a little.
The real issue, however, is Nanami… I still feel uneasy about her situation. Although she’s currently safe thanks to mine and Shiori’s intervention, that guy is still out there, carrying on with his activities as if nothing’s happened. If he hasn’t given up on Nanami, then the next move will likely be at that summer event.
However, for now, the heroines are living happily as I originally planned. Let’s just hope that these days of peace continue without any incidents.
With these thoughts swirling in my mind, I left the restroom and headed to class.
At first, I was reluctant to start my second high school life, but once I got used to it, it was surprisingly fun.
Recently, the way people around me looked at Ibuse Reo has been changing. Still, no one tries to talk to me, but it’s better than the piercing stares I got a month ago.
Still, there’s one person who keeps giving me intense looks…
“Oi, Ibuse.”
Speak of the devil.
“…What is it?”
I reluctantly turned around when I heard a voice from behind. The voice belonged to Miyano Kaede, the protagonist of the game. This might be the first time we’re actually having a proper conversation.
“I need to talk to you. Come to the rooftop.”
“…Fine, fine.”
I can’t keep running away forever. The protagonist Miyano Kaede and the villain Ibuse Reo are people who will have to clash someday.
And so, I followed Kaede to the rooftop in midsummer.
“So? What do you want to talk about?”
“I’ll get straight to the point. Could you please stay away from Shiori-senpai and the others?”
Of course, that’s what this is about.
“Why?”
“…B-Because you’re obviously threatening them!”
“Obviously? Got any proof?”
“Your past actions are all the proof I need!”
“…I see.”
Hearing him say that, I honestly can’t argue.
After all, I know what Ibuse Reo has done too. He would use all sorts of methods, whether it be threats or psychological domination, to woo the girl he liked in order to rape her. If the girl had a boyfriend, he’d casually send the boyfriend a recording of him having sex with his girlfriend, provoking the boyfriends into fights over and over. It was all about establishing himself as the alpha male.
He’s just plain evil. There was no deep backstory or tragic past to justify his actions. If anything, it’s a miracle that Akari and the others are even willing to be around me now. That’s how much of a villain Ibuse Reo was.
When such a man started coming to school, he became close to one girl after another, with whom the protagonist was close with. It would be unreasonable to say that he shouldn’t be worried.
Judging right and wrong is ultimately just a matter of position. From the protagonist’s perspective, the heroines are slowly being taken by another man and leaving him. Strangely, I found myself recreating the scenarios of the game.
“Look, Miyano… I’m not asking you to forgive the old me. But people can change, you know? You probably think I’m just spouting crap, but it’s true.”
Even so, I can’t just say “Okay, I understand” to Kaede’s request now. I know Kaede has his own thoughts, but there are things I can’t give up on either.
“I swear, from here on out, I won’t let any of them suffer. That’s a promise.”
I declared, looking Kaede in the eyes seriously. But Kaede didn’t seem to like that. He grabbed me by the collar and raised his voice.
“How can I trust you with that?!”
“Then——!!”
In response, I grabbed his collar just as quickly and threw my emotions back at him.
“——Try taking them back from me. If you’re so sure you can keep them happy, then prove it!”
“Ugh… Don’t need you to tell me that…”
Perhaps intimidated by my words, Kaede let go of my collar. I let go of him as well, putting some distance between us.
“Then start by making your childhood friend happy, at least.”
“…Shut up.”
Kaede cursed and went back into the school building, leaving me behind.
Then, I waited until Kaede was completely gone and crouched down there.
“Ahhhhhhh…!!”
As I cooled off and replayed the conversation in my head, a wave of regret washed over me for how I’d acted and the things I’d said.
“What was that, ‘Try taking them back from me’? Who do I think I am…? What an idiot…”
It was definitely Hangan’s fault. There was something similar to what Wolf, the main character, had said. Also, the situation seemed like a conversation with a rival, so I couldn’t help but get heated up. If anyone had seen me like that, I wouldn’t be able to live it down. Kaede was too angry to notice, but if he thought back on it, I’d die from embarrassment. Seriously, I can’t believe myself. I’d better hurry up and go back——
“Oh, are you done, Senpai?”
“…How long have you been here?”
I asked the innocent voice I heard from the other side of the door, hoping for a glimmer of hope.
“Hmm… a little while now.”
“…Did you hear anything?”
“…Hmm, something about, ‘I won’t let any of them suffer!’”
“Hahhh~~…”
As I was writhing in embarrassment, the door to the rooftop opened and the owner of the voice, Akari, appeared.
“I didn’t mean to eavesdrop! I just saw you two heading up here with such serious looks, and I thought you might be fighting or something…”
“Yeah… Thanks for the concern…”
Akari sat down next to me as I hung my head, patting me on the back and offering words of comfort.
“I thought you were really cool, though!”
“……Yeah, thanks…”
What was meant to be a kind gesture from Akari felt like a sharp blade cutting through me, delivering the final blow.
