Chapter 15 – The Hidden Beauty That Is Kinoshita Nanami
After school. I was sitting across from two girls at a coffee shop in front of the station.
“You both know each other since you’re in the same class, but let me formally introduce you. This is Kinoshita Nanami. She’s a dear friend of mine.”
“…N-nice to meet you…”
“Yeah, likewise…”
In response to Shiori’s introduction, Nanami timidly lowered her head. She’s been like this since we came here, she’s obviously scared of me. I wonder if I could even have a proper conversation in this state.
“So Nanami. This boy is my dear friend, Ibuse Reo. He may look scary, but he’s very kind deep down, so don’t worry.”
“I-I’m not scared! Ah, …sorry… I didn’t mean to shout…”
“…It’s fine, I don’t mind. You don’t have to hide it.”
“Eh, but… No, I…”
“See? He’s kind, right?”
Shiori said with a proud smile for some reason, and she began speaking for us since we could hardly carry on a conversation ourselves.
“So, Ibuse-kun, are you okay with accompanying us on the day?”
“…Yeah, that’s fine.”
“Nanami too. Are you okay?”
“W-well… if Shiori-chan decided it, then…”
With Nanami’s hesitant answer, Shiori shrugged and turned to face me again.
“Hey, Ibuse-kun. I’d like to ask you a favor.”
“What is it?”
“There’s still a little time until the day. Can you get to know Nanami better before then?”
“Eh!?!?!”
Nanami, who had been shrinking this whole time, reacted to Shiori’s sudden suggestion before I did.
“W-w-w-what are you talking about, Shiori-chan!? That’s… That’s going to be a bother to him!”
“First of all, calm down Nanami. For now, lower your voice and stay calm.”
“Ah, I-I’m sorry…”
Nanami’s loud reaction attracted attention from the other customers and staff in the store. When Nanami realized this, she shrank even further, her face turning red, and fell silent.
“Well, that’s the situation. If this keeps up, we might not be able to fully enjoy the weekend event. That’s why I want you to get along with Nanami.”
“I don’t mind…”
“Thank you. Oh, and one more thing.”
Shiori suddenly stood up, moved next to me, and whispered in my ear so that Nanami wouldn’t be able to hear.
“The truth is, I want to use this opportunity to build up Nanami’s tolerance for boys.”
“…I figured as much.”
“Fufu… As expected of Ibuse-kun.”
It didn’t make much sense for me to be involved in this situation in the first place. Given that, it was natural to assume there was some other motive.
But more importantly…!!
“…What’s wrong? Your ears are red, you know?”
“No… Well, I…”
I can’t help but react when Shiori whispers in my ear in a low voice. I get goosebumps every time her breath touches my ear.
“Oh… Are you embarrassed? I thought you’d be used to this sort of thing, but I guess you’re still just a cute junior.”
“…Of course I’d be embarrassed if a beautiful woman like the President approached me. What do you take me for?”
“?!! …I-I see… Sorry about that…”
Shiori’s body jumped for a second, then she quickly ran back to return to her original seat.
“Well, anyway. That’s how it is. So, um… you two, try to get along!”
Shiori blushed and forced the conversation to wrap up, and we decided to disband for the day.
……
…
“It’s not that easy to get along…”
The next day.
Having been given a difficult task by Shiori, I quietly muttered this during class, observing Nanami in front of me.
If I were to talk to her in class, it would cause a big deal. Nanami would surely get all flustered and Miyano Kaede would come running.
So there’s only one method left.
I need to complete the task I’d agreed to. Otherwise, I could see Shiori nagging me constantly. Knowing her, she’d definitely do it.
And so, after school, I decided to go to the school library for the first time. There were no people in the library, and because it was quite spacious, it seemed even more deserted.
Nanami would definitely be here after school before the summer holidays. She’d be reading a book somewhere out of sight…
“……”
I found myself mesmerized. Even though I knew she would be here, and even though I was aware she was actually quite beautiful, my thoughts still froze for a moment.
Her usual heavy bangs parted to the left and right, her back straight and facing the book, her profile was so beautiful that it’s hard to believe she’s the same person from the previous day who was so flustered.
Her entire demeanor seemed different. Honestly, it felt like the art style itself had changed, as if she was from a different dimension altogether.
…Honestly, I had underestimated Nanami up until now. But seeing her like this, I could understand why this would have such a strong impact. Even though it wasn’t my first time seeing her, it still did this much damage.
If someone were to be hit with this out of the blue after summer break, their brain might genuinely short-circuit, and someone might end up dead.
I hadn’t realized it back then, but now, having encountered her in person and feeling these emotions stir within me, I understood the true meaning of the words I’d read in a review of this game.
According to the reviewer, “Nanami’s route is the hardest. It reminds me of the past and makes me want to cry.”
