- Chapter 21 – First Time Horseback Riding
“It hurts, it hurts! My head, it’s splitting!”
“Wait, Zeke-sama! What are you doing?!”
“Ahh… bite marks and teeth imprints and even drool… but I was told not to intervene so…”
“Hehe… Zeke-sama… I can’t, I shouldn’t laugh… but… hehehe.”
“Hmph. I brought a potion anyway—should I just pour it on?”
“Garim, pour it. He’ll get wet but can’t tell if it’s potion or drool anyway.”
“It’s cold! But the pain went away, maybe! Wait, it’s coming again. Rubert! Do something about this after all!”
Currently, I was gathered in the second garden with Rubert, Misty, Garim, and Debut.
What were we doing? Horsemanship training for me.
To go on the expedition with the capital knight order, I needed to be able to ride a horse. However, I had no horseback riding experience. So I’m training to ride a horse, but the situation isn’t good.
Following Debut and Garim’s instructions who said they’d teach me, when I approached to reassure the horse as they said, I got bitten. Seeing that, Debut panicked, Rubert looked exasperated, Garim ran to get medicine, and Misty was laughing while covering her face with both hands.
“Sigh… what a terrible experience.”
I sat down while giving off the medicinal smell of potion from my head.
“Zeke-sama, I said to reassure it, not to get bitten.”
“Actually, why did you stick your head near its mouth?”
“I tried to pat its head.”
Right, I tried to reassure her. But with my short height, when I tried to pat the horse’s head, my head inevitably went near its mouth.
And as expected, I got bitten.
“He… Zeke-sama… are you… hehe… alright?”
Misty covered her mouth with one hand and trembled while worrying about me. Those eyes were curved like bows—she was definitely holding back laughter, and wait, aren’t those tears?
You’re really worried, right?
“Somehow I’m okay.”
Glancing over, Rubert was controlling the horse saying “easy easy…”
The horse that had been restlessly moving until just now was obedient with Rubert holding the reins, only occasionally shaking its face. It had gray skin with white hair on its head and tail—seemed like a beauty.
“Rubert’s good at everything.”
“Well, I’ve done a bit of everything. Zeke-sama will eventually be able to do anything too.”
“I hope so.”
Looking next, Debut and Garim were arguing about this and that.
“What do we do? Zeke-sama has less talent than we thought.”
“Hmph. You have no eye for it. This horse seems to like Zeke-sama.”
“Then why’d it bite him?”
“Hmph. It was just hungry. When you’re hungry and something convenient comes near your mouth, you bite.”
“So it’s not that Zeke-sama has no riding talent?”
“Hmph. I don’t really sense talent, but let’s not mention that.”
The two glanced at me. As if coordinated, they made awkward smiles. Stop those forced smiles—I could hear that conversation.
“Rubert!”
“Yes?”
“What should I do?”
“Ahh… for now, how about slowly approaching from diagonally in front and petting it?”
—So I petted it as Rubert said.
The horse’s body temperature was warm, and the skin was moist with muscles you could feel.
“Well then, shall we try getting on its back? Put your foot there…”
“Wait wait, leave it to us from there.”
“Hmph. I’ll lead.”
Following Debut’s instructions, I put my foot in and sat in the saddle on its back. Then, with Garim walking beside the horse’s face, I grasped the reins and tried walking the path for now. Clip-clop we walked the path.
The view was high and bounced up and down, but the ride wasn’t bad.
“Hmph. How is it, Zeke-sama?”
“Yeah, that might be good.”
“Zeke-sama, the trick is not pulling the reins too strongly.”
“I see.”
After that I tried various things like pulling and petting the horse.
And then—
“How’s this! Pretty good, right!”
Having gotten the hang of it, I could finally control the horse alone without assistance.
Yeah, basically I let the horse take care of it and I just shift my weight a bit and it handles things.
When I pulled the reins, the horse responded and slowed down. After running around the garden for a while, I returned to the original spot. When I slowly got off the horse and stood in front, the horse slowly lowered its head.
I petted its mane, petted its face—yeah, it’s unexpectedly cute. It didn’t try to bite me either—had it gotten used to me?
“Amazing! Zeke-sama looked so cool. Right, Lord Rubert?”
“Yes, as expected.”
Misty clapped while praising me, and Rubert nodded while crossing his arms.
“Hmph. The prince got used to the horse in no time.”
“Went surprisingly smoothly. It stopped biting too.”
“Hmph. It just found him unappetizing after one bite, didn’t it? Horses don’t eat people.”
“True, horses eat carrots… hm? Carrots, come to think of it the prince has red hair…”
“…!”
Next to them, the two idiots pointed at each other with faces like “we’re geniuses?” having noticed the similarity to a carrot. You think you’re whispering but I can hear you. Should I execute these guys for lèse-majesté already?
“Carrot prince… hehe…!”
Misty burst out laughing.
“Misty?”
“I-I’m… sorry…”
Misty apologized while looking at me. But hey, why is your gaze going above my eyes?
…Anyway, I learned to ride a horse.
Several days later, the departure day for the expedition.
Misty and others came to see me off at the castle gate.
Misty stood with Rubert beside her.
“Zeke-sama, please be careful.”
“Yeah, you stay well too, Misty. I’ll be back soon. Well then, Rubert. I’m counting on you.”
“Yes, leave it to me.”
Rubert bowed respectfully.
“Well well, please leave Zeke-sama to us.”
“Hmph. We’ll be fine with us here.”
Debut and Garim came to my side and said proudly.
“Yes, please take care of you both.”
“We’re entrusting Zeke-sama to you.”
The two thumped their chests over their armor saying “leave it to us.”
Well, these two will risk their lives to protect me.
And so I departed east together with the capital knight order.
