ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー
I couldn’t tell if the things that had happened yesterday had been a dream or reality. Still dazed, I made my way to school. Even though I knew we had another intense day of events ahead, I couldn’t seem to focus.
“Yoru? What’s wrong? Still tired from yesterday?”
The Men’s Cheer Team members gathered in the clubroom looked worried. Seiya, in particular, asked if I seriously wanted to pull out of cheering for today’s sports festival.
“No, sorry. I’m fine. I just… I went to bed early last night, so I woke up too early this morning and spaced out a bit.”
“Yoru? You wanna lie down here for a bit?”
Youhei pointed to one of the empty beds, showing his concern.
“If you’re tired, rest is important. If you end up falling asleep, we can handle the cheering on our own for the morning.”
Compared to the first semester, Hayato had become much more reliable.
“Then I’ll take you up on that offer. Just a quick nap, though. Seiya, make sure you wake me up before you guys head out.”
“…Got it.”
Seiya still looked worried but agreed. After about a thirty-minute nap, we headed out to cheer. The second day was focused on track and field events, most of which took place in the stadium.
Aside from the long-distance marathon, every event was split between the stadium and the
main grounds, making the schedule flow more smoothly than the first day. By the afternoon, I made a suggestion to Seiya.
“Hey, Seiya. There are events for guys only, right?”
“Yeah? Why?”
“I dunno, it’s just… Since it’s the sports festival, I kinda feel like I should compete in something.”
“Yoru, you… Haaa, fine. I’ll let the president know. So? What do you want to enter?”
I looked over the list of men’s events. The second day was all about pure athleticism—running, jumping, throwing…
“Hmm… I guess I want to run, jump, and throw.”
“Got it. Three events. Alright.”
He fiddled with his phone for a moment, then showed me something.
“Okay, you can go all out this afternoon. What about you two?”
When Seiya called out to the others, Youhei waved both hands dismissively.
“Sports? Nah, I’m out. Don’t wanna move.”
“I’m interested, but if I don’t conserve my energy for the three-day event, I won’t be able to maintain my pace. I’ll pass this time.”
Hayato said.
“OK! Then I’ll skip too. I want to give directions for the filming and the editing today.”
“Sorry, guys. I’m aware I’m being selfish here..”
The three of them exchanged glances and laughed.
“Captain Yoru~ It’s fine. In fact, we should be thanking you!”
Youhei answered on behalf of the group.
“Thanking me?”
“Yeah! If you’re competing, that means attention will shift away from cheering for a bit. We can finally rest.”
“Right. Honestly, dancing and singing for three straight days without a break was starting to worry me. So, this helps.”
It seemed the three of them were feeling the fatigue from the festival’s packed schedule.
“Thanks for sticking with me through all this, guys.”
I bowed deeply to show my gratitude.
“Don’t sweat it, man. We’re having fun too.”
“Yeah. It’s busier than I expected, but it’s been a pretty fun few days.”
Youhei responded in his usual easygoing tone, while Seiya smiled wryly.
“I used to think I was weak.”
Hayato said suddenly, his tone serious enough to make me look up.
“But ever since you started training me, I’ve been feeling so much better. Youhei, Seiya… and you, Yoru. Being friends with you guys… It really made my high school life feel really fulfilling.”
His eyes welled with tears, and I pulled him into a tight hug.
“Right back at you, man. You’ve been working really hard.”
Hayato cried into my chest.
“Hayato’s really changed, huh?”
“Yeah. He used to be the quiet literature type.”
“Wh-what’s that supposed to mean?! I just like books, okay?! I’m a science major!”
“Yeah, sure. But between us, Hayato actually has the worst grades.”
The other two started teasing him.
“Alright, enough, you two. I know how hard Hayato’s been trying.”
“Yoru~ Don’t comfort me! You’re smart, athletic, and good-looking! Totally unfair!”
Wait, what?! I just said something nice, and somehow I’m the target now?!
“Well, can you blame them? You’re taller, more muscular, and you’re handsome too.”
“True. Hayato’s got glasses, he’s frail, and a crybaby.”
It was obvious Youhei was joking, but it still felt like Seiya was kinda roasting him.
“Shut up, shut up, shut up! I-I’m not—!”
“C’mon, Hayato, don’t get mad. And you two, cool it.”
“Yeah yeah.”
“Okay~.”
“…Well, I guess I’m happy we can joke around like this now.”
He turned away, face red.
“He’s blushing.”
“Yeah, he’s totally blushing.”
“Total dere moment.”
“Shut up! Whatever! Anyway, we’ve got the afternoon off, right? I’m taking a nap!”
He flopped onto the sofa, sulking.
“Alright then, I’m heading out to compete. Take it easy, guys.”
The three saw me off as I left the clubroom. By the time I reached the grounds, it was time for the male student to compete. When only male students participated, the girls’ attention naturally focused on them.
Since the Men’s Cheer Team was on break, it was also one of the rare times the girls could freely watch other guys. I joined the event lineup with the other male students.
“Eh?”
“Wait, is that…?!”
It seemed the announcer, GKO-san, and the commentator, Kaise-san, had noticed me.
“N-no way!!! GKO-san!!!”
“Unbelievable, Kaise-san!! We’ve just received word that Yoru Kurose from the Men’s Cheer Team will be making a special appearance in today’s events! While there are already incentives for male participants—such as academic perks—the question now is, how will things change with Kurose-kun joining in?!”
“His events are the 100-meter dash, pole vault, and javelin throw!”
“Everyone, please enjoy this unexpected development!”
That was the first I’d heard of it too… But honestly, I was glad they told me about it since I just went with the flow.
