【Tsuyu Zashiki】
In the wide tatami room, a woman in a kimono sat formally in seiza, gazing at me with anxious eyes.
“Tsuyu-san…Are you really going to Tokyo?”
At the words my mother spoke, I silently nodded. My younger brother was in the city. He was ten years younger than me and often sick, rarely leaving the hospital.
At first, when our family was still living in Shizuoka, he only needed regular hospital visits, but after he turned five, his condition worsened, and he was transferred to a hospital in the city. For the sake of my brother, who had to live in a place with no family around, I decided to move to our home in the city.
“Tsuyu-san, you don’t have to go. I can go on weekends, you know.”
“I know. But… I want to stay by his side.”
“…It’ll be lonely here without you, Tsuyu-san.”
“Tsurara will be even lonelier.”
“Ugh, Tsuyu-san, you’re abandoning your mother~!”
“Praise your child for growing up.”
After breaking away from my parents and transferring to a city school, I had two purposes—taking care of my brother, and something else. It was an unforgettable encounter I’d had that summer.
“Um, excuse me.”
When I saw a tall boy looking flustered and lost, many girls nearby were staring at him, unsure whether they should approach.
“Eh? Ah, yes.”
He was huge! My height was 138 centimeters, and I barely reached his chest.
“Are you looking for the restroom?”
What could trouble a boy? Thinking of the times my little brother had struggled when we were going outside, I decided to ask first.
“Actually, yeah.”
“Come with me. There aren’t many men’s restrooms around.”
I could tell from their frustrated looks that the other girls were jealous. They all wanted to talk to him, but since they weren’t used to it, they couldn’t bring themselves to, and now they regretted letting me beat them to it.
If I take him there and leave him alone, he might get attacked by someone else.
“Thanks.”
“It’s fine… I have a little brother, so I’m used to it.”
When he came out, he seemed surprised that I was still waiting for him.
“Thank you. You really helped me.”
“It’s fine. Come on, let’s go back. You don’t know the way, right?”
“Ah…”
If it were my little brother, I’d hold his hand while walking back. But for a man, being held by a woman he just met might feel uncomfortable. As I walked slowly, I kept glancing back to make sure he was following.
“Thanks again and again. I want to give you something in return. How about I buy you a juice?”
What a polite boy. It would be rude to turn down his kindness. I spotted my favorite drink in the vending machine and spoke softly.
“…Strawberry milk.”
It was embarrassing to say that to a boy.
“OK.”
Even when we sat side by side, he was so big that just being next to him gave me a sense of security.
“My name’s Yoru Kurose. Thanks for guiding me.”
He introduced himself, and though I hadn’t planned to, I hesitated before replying with my own name.
“…Tsuyu. Tsuyu Zashiki. I’m used to it, so it’s fine.”
“Tsuyu-chan, huh. Even if you’re used to it, speaking up to help someone in trouble is still amazing. Really, thank you.”
Tsuyu-chan??? I’ve never been called that by a man before!!!
My face suddenly grew hot, and I looked down in embarrassment.
“Shall we get going? Please take me back to the road.”
“Mm.”
When we returned to the main path, his family was waiting for him, and feeling relieved, I quietly left. It should have been just a small, forgettable summer memory. But at the end of summer… I happened to see him on TV.
It was a high school in the city. Aoba High School? When the sports department of Aoba High was featured on television, I saw him in the cheering section. That moment, I couldn’t sit still. I made up my mind to transfer schools. I wanted to be near my beloved brother and the boy who had left a deep impression in my heart.
Aoba High was a famous academic school even in the city. To transfer there, you either needed enough academic ability to enter the advanced course or athletic skill to receive a recommendation for the sports course.
Since the advanced course at Aoba High allowed classes together with male students, there was only one choice for me. I had to enter that class no matter what. They said the rankings for the advanced course would be decided by a proficiency test held before summer break, so I took the exam.
I pushed past all the honor students and claimed the top spot on the proficiency test.
“Class 1-A?”
“That’s right. The boys in that class are Youhei Midorino-kun, Hayato Akai-kun, Seiya Shirogane-kun, and Yoru Kurose-kun.”
My homeroom teacher, Tsubaki Kanzaki-sensei, explained the class details. It was decided that I would transfer into Class 1-A, the class reserved for the top 25 students of the advanced course. I was also told about an unspoken rule at Aoba High: not to cause trouble for the boys.
“Cause trouble?”
“Yes. Boys are originally fragile creatures mentally. Many have trauma or discomfort toward girls. Zashiki, since you look young, you might not be rejected by them as much, but try not to hurt them.”
Schools had all sorts of rules. I agreed and went to visit my younger brother.
“Onee-chan!”
“Tsurara, is it okay for you to be up?”
“Yeah, I’m fine. I feel good today.”
Even though he said he was fine, Tsurara’s pale face made him look fragile and yet he was acting he was fine. He was such a good boy.
“Onee-chan, have you met the person you like?”
I told him about the boy I’d met that summer. Tsurara, so different from the big, strong boy in my story, loved hearing about him.
“I’m sorry. I haven’t seen him yet. It’s still before summer break, so school hasn’t started yet.”
“I see~ I hope you and that guy get married someday! Then he could be my big brother!”
I wanted to make my brother’s wish come true. I wanted to marry that boy. I wanted to introduce him to my brother.
“I’ll do my best!”
“You’re super popular, Onee-chan, so I’m sure it’ll be fine!!!”
Back home, I’d always been popular. Because of my appearance and family background, men didn’t avoid me. In fact, they often found me easy to approach.
But the school life my brother cheered me into turned out to be a nest of chaos. I knew he was popular, but not this popular. The hostility from my classmates was intense.
“Yes, of course. The Men’s Cheer Team members are the pride of Aoba High. I’ve even heard that the Student Council and various athletic clubs submitted petitions requesting their cheering service.”
The Men’s Cheer Team? What’s that supposed to be?
“Question!”
“Yes, Zashiki-san?”
“What is the Men’s Cheer Team?”
“Hehe, Zashiki-san. That’s not something I can simply tell you. At Aoba High, there isn’t a single student who doesn’t know about the Men’s Cheer Team. Therefore, not knowing is, in itself, a source of shame.”
“Wh—! Th-That’s not fair! You could at least tell me!”
This bespectacled girl loved to show off her superiority.
She’s an enemy!
“Zashiki, here.”
As I bit my lip in frustration, Kurose-kun spoke to me from behind and showed me his phone.
“Hm? Thanks. Wait—this is!!!”
On the screen was a video of him singing, dancing, and at times shouting cheers. Depending on the sport, their costumes, songs, and dances all changed.
I have to show this to Tsurara right away!
“I’ve subscribed to the channel. Also, I added my number.”
“Huh? Subscribed? Your number?”
“Tsuyu-chan?”
The way he called me—just like he did when we first met.
“Yes. That’s what you’ll call me.”
“O-Oh, uh, okay.”
While he seemed a bit puzzled, I made a small request.
“Yoru-kun… Yoru-kun…”
He seemed lost in thought, not answering even when I called him.
“Huh?”
“Yoru-kun, you finally noticed.”
“Ah, sorry. Were you calling me?”
“Yes. I was. I have a favor to ask.”
“A favor?”
As I spoke to Yoru-kun, some of the girls who were about to leave stopped in their tracks.
“What is it?”
“I want you to show me around the school.”
“Show you around? Me? You, Zashiki-san?”
“Yes. Yoru will show Tsuyu-chan around.”
Yoru-kun turned toward the boy next to him. That must be… Shirogane-kun? Maybe they were friends.
“Why not? You don’t know much about the school either. This could be a good chance to explore together.”
It seemed Shirogane-kun was on my side.
“Is that… A no?”
I knew I was being a bit calculating, but I used my childish looks to my advantage.
“Sure. I’m not that familiar with the school either, so we’ll be exploring together.”
“That’s fine. Let’s go.”
I stood up and took his hand. My heart pounded, but I was happy.
“UOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!”
The wails of the defeated echoed behind us, but I didn’t care. Later, while we were walking together, a sporty girl gave me an amazing tip.
A live bromide photo of Yoru-kun!!! I’ll definitely get one and show it to Tsurara!!!
I quickly said goodbye to Yoru-kun, bought the bromide, and headed straight to the hospital to show it my brother.
