ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー
When the second semester began, the atmosphere at the school immediately started shifting toward preparations for the sports festival. The advanced study course, the general study course, and the sport course—each had around a thousand students per grade, so it was only natural for the festival to become a grand occasion.
The Sports Festival and the Aoba Festival, held jointly across all three grades, were the two biggest events at Aoba High School.
“Now then, I’d like to decide which events Class 1-A will be participating in.”
With this many students, it was impossible for everyone to take part in every competition. Each class had to submit applications for which events they wanted to enter. Also, if an event didn’t have enough participants, it could end up being removed altogether.
“Before that, may I say something?”
Interrupting the class representative, Mimori, Seiya stood up and spoke out.
“Y-Yes, Shirogane-kun. What is it?”
“I think everyone already knows, but the four of us are part of the Men’s Cheer Team. During the sports festival, we’ll need to move between events to cheer for them, so unfortunately, we won’t be able to participate in the competitions themselves.”
Huh? Seriously? No one told me about that. I stared at Seiya in surprise. He met my eyes, gave a knowing look that said ‘I understand’, and nodded before sitting back down.
No, you don’t understand. I’m the one who doesn’t get it!
“Yes, of course. The Men’s Cheer Team members are the pride of Aoba High. I’ve even heard that the Student Council and various athletic clubs submitted petitions requesting their cheering service.”
Wait, what? Things have been decided without me?
Even though I was the captain! It seemed the vice-captain who doubled as the strategist had made all the decisions without me again.
“Question!”
“Yes, Zashiki-san?”
“What’s the Men’s Cheer Team?”
So the transfer student, Tsuyu Zashiki, hadn’t yet seen the Men’s Cheer Team in action? Lately, Seiya’s SNS posts had become really popular. Our videos were even being uploaded to NewTube. Yuuna had even told YO! HEY!’s self-produced tracks were getting pretty good views too.
“Hehe, Zashiki-san. That’s not something I can simply tell you. At Aoba High, there isn’t a single student who doesn’t know about the Men’s Cheer Team. Therefore, not knowing is, in itself, a source of shame.”
“Wh—! Th-That’s not fair! You could at least tell me!”
To an outsider, it looked like Mimori was bullying the small, elementary school–looking Zashiki.
Things are looking pretty sour…
“Zashiki, here.”
I held out my smartphone so she could see. I didn’t want things to turn bad if I could help it.
“Hm? Thanks. Wait—this is!!!”
As soon as I handed it to her, Tsuyu stared at the screen with intense focus. Feeling proud of myself for helping, I lifted my head—only to find the girls in class glaring daggers at me. Mimori was even biting her lip hard enough to draw blood.
Whoa. What’s with that expression? Are you all okay?
“I’ve subscribed to the channel. Also, I added my number.”
“Huh? Subscribed? Your number?”
Sure enough, I saw a new contact saved under the name Tsuyu-chan.
“Tsuyu-chan?”
“Yes. That’s what you’ll call me.”
“O-Oh, uh, okay.”
As soon as I replied, I felt a chilling pressure behind me—like a wall of hostility piercing my spine. Everyone who’d been watching me turned their eyes forward at once. Their faces hidden from my view who was sitting at the back of the room. Even Mimori was facing the chalkboard, her expression unreadable.
While I sat there confused, Seiya leaned over and whispered.
“Yoru… You’re way too defenseless. And maybe try not to get too close to Zashiki-san, okay?”
Even as Seiya warned me, Tsuyu-chan—formerly Zashiki—had already pulled out her own phone and was watching videos of us. Clips of the swim team, volleyball team, baseball team, tennis team, and others we had done surprise cheering for during the summer. By now, there was quite a collection.
“Zashiki-san, Kuramine-san, Kizuki-san, Mogami-san, Michiko Houjou-san, Juri Amamiya-san, and myself—seven of us will form the pole-toppling team.”
Before I realized it, they had decided on the event. When I heard Tsuyu’s name called, I looked up—and saw six girls glaring at her with eyes full of murderous intent.
“…Bring it on.”
Without backing down, Tsuyu snorted and accepted the challenge.
Wait, aren’t you all classmates? Why does this feel like a declaration of war?
And wasn’t pole-toppling a pretty rough sport? Wouldn’t little Tsuyu-chan get crushed in that?
“Yoru… You’re clearly overthinking this. It’s better not to get involved in times like these. Among women, there are female-only battles you just can’t interfere with.”
Once again, Seiya’s warning reminded me that this was no place for me to step in. After that, everyone finished signing up for their preferred events, and the discussion wrapped up smoothly.
“Yoru-kun… Yoru-kun…”
I thought I heard my name and looked up—Tsuyu-chan was watching me.
“Huh?”
“Yoru-kun, you finally noticed.”
“Ah, sorry. Were you calling me?”
“Yes. I was. I have a favor to ask.”
“A favor?”
The moment she said that, the classmates who’d been about to leave paused mid-step.
“What is it?”
“I want you to show me around the school.”
“Show you around? Me? You, Zashiki-san?”
“Yes. Yoru will show Tsuyu-chan around.”
Should I agreed to the request of Tsuyu-chan, who looked like a small girl on the outside, but a refined young lady on the inside? I glanced toward Seiya.
“Why not? You don’t know much about the school either. This could be a good chance to explore together.”
His suggestion made me feel both excited and slightly offended—like he was treating me as a kid.
“Is that… A no?”
With an innocent tilt of her head and big pleading eyes, she was impossible to refuse.
“Sure. I’m not that familiar with the school either, so we’ll be exploring together.”
“That’s fine. Let’s go.”
Without warning, she grabbed my hand and started to pull me along. She wasn’t that strong, but there was something firm about her grip. I sighed and let her lead me out of the room.
“”””””UOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!””””””
From behind us, a roar erupted from the classroom—like the cries of a pack of wild beasts breaking into chaos mode.
