- It turns out that I have a fiancee, but she is the famous "villainess" of the school. What should I do?
- Episode 40 - A childhood friend is always a good friend….. Eh? That’s completely wrong!
Although the definition of “childhood friends” may differ from person to person, as far as I’m concerned, I, Hiroyuki Higashi Kujo, would consider the two girls, Ryoko Kamo and Tomomi Suzuki, to be my “childhood friends. Since Tomomi went to my nursery school and Ryoko’s parents lived close to mine, we’ve literally known each other since birth. If you can’t consider that to be a childhood friendship, what exactly is a childhood friend? At best, you could consider them to be troublesome little sisters.
Why am I rambling along, talking about stuff like this you may ask?
“–That’s why, Ryoko! I told you that’s not true!”
“I’m not wrong! It’s Tomomi who’s wrong! It’s not me!”
“Shameless! Ryoko, you always do that! You really have to cut the crap!
“It’s you, Tomomi-chan! Why are you so insensitive? Are you stupid!?”
“Huh?! Who did you just call stupid?!”
“You. You are stupid, Tomomi-chan.”
“…”
“…”
“Hey, Higashi Kujo-kun.”
“What?”
“Do something about this, won’t you? Aren’t you our childhood friend?”
“There are things you can do and can’t.”
The usual lunch break, where Ryoko serves us homemade lunch boxes – has already become a regular event over the past few weeks. Usually things proceed somewhat peacefully… but today things are a little different.
“Geez! I don’t know any Ryoko anymore!”
“That’s my line! I don’t know Tomomi-chan anymore either!”
“Hmph!”
“Hmph!”
“…”
I let out a small sigh as the two of them turned away in a grand gesture.

“Thanks. It’s been a rough day.”
I was stretched out in the living room after returning home, and with a wry smile on her face, Kiryu put the coffee she had brewed for me on the table. I thanked her and took a sip of the coffee.
“Mmm.. That hits the spot.”
“Happy to hear that. Though… the two of them are fighting? Surprised to hear that.”
“Those two… They’re too close to each other, so they end up fighting over the tiniest things.”
Like really. It started with a long-standing argument over which of us eats the one with the little bit of the ice cream, then a battle over the TV channel at a sleepover at my house, and recently they’ve been clashing a little bit over fashion. I mean, seriously, it’s about time they stopped this.
“That’s great. I’m amazed you can handle it and still get them to get along.”
“It’s just like that. It’s kinda like kittens playing with each other. They’re just trying to figure out how much force to use on each other. Not that it makes a difference, but they’re both very friendly, aren’t they?”
“Fair point.”
“Ryoko is like Tomomi and Tomomi is like Ryoko; they are learning about interpersonal relationships. It’s just an everyday occurrence.”
“What about you?”
“I mean, boys and girls are a little different, you know? To begin with, I was the kind of guy who ate both kinds of ice cream alone.”
“You really are…”
“It can’t be helped. We’ve known each other since we were three. There’s no way we’re going to share ice cream.”
Either way my opinions often go unheard. That’s who I am.
“Well, I guess it happens. So? Is everything ok?”
“For the meantime I guess, Mizuho and Akane have been incessantly calling me and sending me quite frightening messages as well.”
“Mizuho, who was in a really bad mood, told me “ Tomomi-senpai was the devil today! Practice was so hard!”. Then I also got a message from Akane saying “ Oni~, what’s going on? Ryoko was so mad today!” Besides Akane, it’s not my fault. That approach of trying to find a reason for everything from me, her brother, I don’t know why it’s like that~.”
“I’m starting to feel more sorry for Kawakita-san and your sister instead…”
“Well, I guess so. I think they might be the worst victims. Mizuho is almost always treated by Tomomi as her underling.”
Athletic types are scary, aren’t they?
“Those two are surprisingly mature. Maybe it’s because they had a role model close to them, but they realize that ‘strife produces nothing’.”
“You’re unexpectedly calm.”
“There is also a theory that says Ryoko and Tomomi are idiots.
Why don’t they ever grow up? They are already seventeen years old, and yet what they do hasn’t changed since they were about three. Is it that? The soul of a three-year-old lasts for a hundred years?
(T/N: Means that a personality trait from young age remains even until old age )
“But I might be a little envious.”
“Really?”
“Because… no matter how much they fight, they always make up, don’t they? Doesn’t that mean that they are inseparable?”
“I guess… That’s what it’s like to be sisters.”
“It’s because they’re such good friends that they can fight as much as they want. I kind of admire that kind of relationship.”
Kiryu says that with a distant look..
“Well I… don’t have any friends.”
“…”
That’s right. She doesn’t have any friends, does she? Maybe that’s why she has a longing to get into fights. Without a partner, she can’t have someone to have a fight with, right?
“Do you… want to?”
“Wa-What?”
“Don’t back away from me with your hands clutching your body! What do you think you’re doing?”
You little prick!
“Also no, it’s not that, it’s… that thing. Here, if you have some subtle ‘longing’, you want to try it? Having a quarrel? “
“..Eh?”
“T-That’s why! If you have any complaints, I’ll listen to you! Well, if it’s unreasonable, I’ll get angry too… like this…”
I can’t say it well. I don’t know how to say it properly, but I guess she got what I was trying to say, as Kiryu showed me a smile.
“Thanks.. But I’ll pass.”
“I see.”
“Indeed. Of course, I’ll be voicing my opinion, but–
–I don’t want you to hate me.”
“…I’m not going to hate you for fighting with me, okay?”
“Fufufu. Those words alone are enough. Thank you, Higashi Kujo-kun.”
“As you said earlier, if Ryoko and Tomomi are inseparable, then you and I are inseparable as well… I mean… I’m not going to be shy about it, okay? You know…”
“You’re not going to get anything out of me by pleasing me so much, okay?”
“I’m not asking you to serve me anything more. This coffee is good enough for me.”
Kiryu smiled softly at me holding up the cup while saying that.
….And I wish I could have just settled it.
The next morning, Tomomi found me in school, rubbing my sleepy eyes, and came up to making large strides towards me.
“–Hey, Hiro! I’ve just broken ties with Ryoko!”
Eh? Why is this happening?
