“I don’t have any 400-word manuscript paper at home though.”

Ah right, I’m currently being scolded in the staff room. More specifically, I’ve just finished being squeezed by my homeroom teacher, the math instructor in charge of the sixth period, and the world history instructor in charge of the fifth period. Turns out, it was not a good idea to skip out on the homeroom session, and I… ended up having to take remedial classes. But well, I think he’s a good teacher as he went out of his way to make up for a student who skipped class for his own reasons. Right?

“Ah yes, Higashi Kujo?”

“Yes? Are you still mad, sir?”

“Come to think of it, I heard that you were running in the hallway.”

“I’m just kidding. While you were getting scolded by Endo-sensei, Kiryu came to talk to me.”

Endo-sensei is our world history teacher. Although this teacher did not give me remedial classes, he still gave me a… mountain of assignments to print out.

“Kiryu?”

“”I was feeling a little under the weather, so Higashi Kujo-kun came to watch over me! It’s not his fault!” so she said.”

“…”

“Her eyes were a little red too.  Did you do something with her? Specifically, some form of illicit sexual activity?”

“No, I didn’t!”

“Since you are admitted to our school, you can’t fail on a single subject you know? You should take remedial classes so that you don’t fall behind everyone else. You should have given up when you got into my class in the first place. I will not let you fail in math, no matter what you do! I’ll make you pass, no matter what it takes!”

“That’s tyranny…”

“Correct. Call me the Orange Shirted General of the brats of Tian Eikan High School.”

After saying that, she laughed and then dropped her tone of voice a little.

“Well, you know what? I think it’s good to do what you want while you’re young. I’m not saying that you should skip class for any reason, or anything trivial for that matter. But If there is something you think is more important than class and if you are willing to take the risk of skipping class for it, you can make that choice on your own. Provided you can pay the price.”

“Those aren’t the words of a teacher, are they?”

“I know. But don’t worry! Since if you skip math, I’ll make you take a lot of make-up work! I’ll even help you with that! How’s that! That’ s teacherly, isn’t it?”

“I don’t want to do that either.”

“If that’s the way you feel, you better not skip class.”

“Roger.”

“All right, then. You can go home.”

I bowed to the teacher, who waved her hand in the air, and left the staff room. 

It’s already five in the afternoon. There are students working hard on the field, but there’s no one in the school building itself anymore. An empty school building is a little scary, I thought as I put my hand on the door of my classroom.

“Why are you here..?”

“Of course it’s because I was waiting for you.”

I saw Kiryu sitting in my seat reading.

“Sorry, did I make you wait?”

“Why is it in question form?”

“Uhh…. “I made you wait.”, that’s fine right?  Is this it? I was just wondering.”

“No need to apologize. Rather, I’m sorry too. It’s my fault. Good work on the make-up classes.”

“Why are you here?”

“I’m the one who got you in trouble, Higashi Kujo-kun, remember? Isn’t it only natural that I should wait for you?”

“Well, I would’ve been happier if you had gone home early..”

“I know, I know, but! I’m so sorry!”

“No, you don’t have to feel guilty about it. I just did it because I wanted to, so I’m responsible for it, and I’m not going to tell you to take responsibility for it, okay?”

“I-I know! I know you’re not the kind of person who would say something like that but… That’s not it! Mou~!”

Kiryu’s cheeks puff up to my words. The expression “I’m not happy!” appears to be embodied.

“I just wanted to… spend a little more time with you today! You should red between the lines, baka!” 

“…”

“You understand, don’t you? I know I’ll see you when I get home anyway. But you know what? I feel… really… lonely right now.”

Can we go home together?”

“… Okay, I understand. Well then, it’s getting late and we should probably head home, right?” 

“Y-Yeah….., wait a minute! I’m putting my book away!” 

“Okay, okay.”

I picked up my bag on the hook next to the desk and waited for Kiryu. She carefully put the book in her bag so that it would not be damaged, and stood up.

“Thanks for waiting. Shall we go home then?”

“Yeah, now give me.”

“What?”

“Your bag.”

“Thanks. But it’s fine. I don’t like that. I hate it when they make men carry bags.”

“Is that so? Huh? I remember you making me carry around twenty books though?”

“If something is heavy, it makes sense for the stronger person to carry it, but I’ll carry it when I can myself. I don’t want to be dependent on you… I can take care of myself.”

“I see.”

“Mhm. You said you would support me… but I don’t like being supported all the time. I am the one who forges my own path and goes forward.”

“… I see.”

“I don’t want to walk behind you. I want to walk next to you. When I am troubled, when I am in distress, I want you to always be next to me…”

I’m sure that’s more reassuring than anything else.

“T-Therefore… U-uhm… please… a-always… stay by my side… Okay?”

She said with dyed cheeks and a bright red face.

“Roger.”

—I will walk with this girl from now on.

It may not be an easy road. There may be hard times, painful times, and times when I would just want to cry.

…Still, I think that, somehow, it will work out. If it was with this girl, Ayane Kiryu, who has the strength as a “villainess”.

“I had my worries, at first.”

“Worries? What do you mean?”

“Well…”

“It turns out I have a fiancee, but she’s the famous ‘villainess’ of the school, what do I do?”

“Hey, you idiot! Don’t run in the hallway! I just got scolded for that!”

—Let’s walk.

Matching strides at the same speed.

“Come on! Stop running!”

This may sound like the last installment, but it is not. Rather, this is the beginning. It’s just that the first part is over!　It’s like that. It’s about the size of a volume in a novel. I think the next one will be …… Tomomi’s or Ryoko’s story. I’d like to write the Mizuho chapter the most, but I think it would be better if I layered the chapters a little more to give the story more depth. …… and I’ve only slept eight hours because I was a little worried, so it might be difficult to post today ←.
