It only took a smile - Chapter 20- Take care
“May I come in?”
The sudden voice made everyone turn. Chihiro froze where she stood.
“Matsumoto-san?!” she gasped, disbelief clear in her tone. Of all people, she was the last one Chihiro expected to see here.
The bald man scowled. “And who the hell are you?”
Mai stepped in calmly, her expression unreadable. Four men followed behind her—each one broad-shouldered and towering.
The bulky man, who had been ready to fight Kenji moments ago, quietly sucked in a breath. The room suddenly felt smaller… tighter.
Even the bald man shifted uneasily on the couch, feeling the weight of the new tension in the air.
Mai stopped beside Kenji, her gaze steady on the man in the black coat.
“You’re a lawyer, right?” she asked. “Can you show me your ID?”
The man hesitated before scoffing, trying to sound confident. “And why would I need to do that?”
Mai didn’t raise her voice. “Before checking the documents, I want to confirm that the person presenting them is actually a lawyer.”
Her calm tone only made the man grind his teeth harder. He stood abruptly. “You—”
But before he could finish, one of Mai’s guards pressed a firm hand against his chest and shoved him back down onto the couch. The message was clear—any rash move, and things would turn ugly fast.
The bald man finally snapped. “What the hell, Mayuri?! First, you take money from me—using our past connection—and now you’re threatening me?!”
Mayuri flinched, trembling at his words.
Kenji gently placed a hand on her shoulder, his expression hardening as his eyes narrowed on the bald man.
Mai sighed softly, then turned her gaze toward him. “You’re Ito Gonza, right? A property consultant?”
Gonza tensed, trying to hide his unease. “Yeah, so what?”
Mai gave a slow nod and gestured to one of the guards. He handed her a few documents, which she flipped through before slamming one down on the table.
“Four years ago, you hit someone with your car in Osaka and ran. You were sentenced to six months in prison, but thanks to your connections, the case never went public.”
Gonza’s eyes widened, color draining from his face.
Mai’s voice remained steady. “In Kyoto, you have a house in the central district. Your mistress, Miss Rumi, lives there. These are photos of the two of you.”
She slid another document forward. Gonza’s eyes darted to it—his hands trembling as he saw the evidence.
“And finally,” Mai continued, her tone sharp as a blade, “this file contains every government-owned property you’ve illegally bought through your consultancy deals.”
*Thud.*
Gonza dropped back onto the couch, his face drenched in sweat, his mouth slightly open in horror.
H-How… how does she know all this?
The room turned silent.
It was again Mai who spoke, “Any of these three folders can bring you trouble. Your company would be doomed and your reputation would be ruined.”
Gonza trembled, suddenly feeling as if he had made a mistake by coming here.
He moved the table and fell on his knees. His head pressed right before Mai’s feet as he begged,
“P-Please, spare me! I swear I won’t trouble these people again! Please!”
Mai coldly looked down at the man before telling him, “Get up.”
Gonza sniffled, his face filled with tears as he slowly rose and looked at her girl.
Mai crossed her arms and asked, “Who sent you here?”
Gonza took a sharp breath.
She knows about that too?!
Mai heaved a sigh, “Well, even if you don’t tell me, I know who it is. It’s Fujimoto Takashi, right?”
Chihiro’s eyes widened upon hearing that name.
Kenji just frowned since he had heard that family name before.
The bald man didn’t speak a word but his widened eyes gave her the answer.
The silver head gave a brief nod before the four guards started to move.
“Ah-no, wait!” Gonza tried to stop the person, but he was easily taken away by the men.
The other two were asked ‘nicely’ and the space finally gained some room to breathe.
“Come here,” Kenji helped his ex-wife to the couch and helped her sit down.
Mayuri didn’t have the strength in her legs to stand anymore.
Chihiro took a few moments to process everything.
Takashi…Takashi…she had a feeling but…it turned out…
‘So I was right. It was him all along!’ Her life has changed for the worse ever since she rejected that person.
Turned out, behind his sweet facade, he was an evil bastard.
Kenji then turned towards Mai and asked, “Are you perhaps Matsumoto Sato’s child?”
Mai nodded, “Yes, I am. Nice to meet you, Kenji-san.”
Kenji didn’t know her…he just knows that her father is a known industrialist.
But the question arise, “Why did you help us?”
Mai brought her hands to the front and gave a brief but respectful bow before relaying, “You are someone important to Haruto-kun. And as his future wife, it’s my duty to take care of you.”
Kenji’s lips parted in shock.
It has been only a few days since he came here and he is already getting married?!
