- Chapter 4- Stop being my friend
I didn’t talk to Yuki much after that day. It seems she was scolded by her mother, that’s why she was upset with me. But when the other coaxed her, she became normal.
Now, we don’t go or come back from school together. Not when she is with her friends, nor when she is alone.
I walk a few meters behind or she just takes another path.
She was completely ignoring me as if I lied and went to the pool with my friends without telling her.
Sometimes, some people behave so unfairly that it feels laughable.
But there was no point in laughing or confronting her.
The thread of friendship we have been holding was severed by her.
Just like that.
About Asakura-kun, then, I don’t think she was dating him since the distance between them was the same.
Well, I don’t feel anything about it now. Whether she dates him or not is up to her and I don’t think it would affect me anymore.
Maybe.
It has been over ten days since that pool incident and we haven’t exchanged a single word.
Even if we accidentally glanced at each other, she averted her eyes as if she were looking at filth or something.
It was laughable. The same girl who was clinging to me just over two weeks ago…now was ignoring me as if I were thin air.
Well, good for her. I was a loner. I am a loner…and God knows what awaits me.
“Hey, let’s go karaoke today. Please?” I heard Tachibana-san’s voice as I packed my bag. The classes were over.
“Yui-chan..you know…my mom has been a little…”
“We know that’s why we will bring you back before seven. And you can tell her you are just studying at the library, no?” Haruka suggested.
Another lie, huh? It seems it was natural for them.
Seeing them having fun so casually, I sometimes felt as if I was just a sore loser who felt that lying to my parents was a bad thing. Maybe I just don’t fit in this generation.
“I don’t know…” Yuki seemed hesitant but then Asakura-kun confidently said,
“I will hear her scolding and even kowtow if she gets mad. I promise. So please come?” He seemed pretty insistent. Maybe they had a plan all along?
Regardless, I didn’t wait to hear her response and got up.
Walking out of the classroom, I went to my favorite convenience store and asked, “Do you have any cream buns left?”
The lady smiled and gave me two, even though they were quite popular. Sometimes I feel she saves two for me.
I ate the bun and walked back to my house, enjoying the summer breeze and the sweetness.
Who said lonely people can’t be happy?
I am.
….
“Where is Dad?” I asked Mom as she served the dinner.
“He has gone to meet your grandfather. He might not come home tonight,” she said as she sat down across from me.
“It’s rare for him to visit back home.” My grandparents lived in Kyoto, which was three hours from here. If Dad went to meet them at this hour then it must be some kind of emergency.
I was thinking of calling him after dinner, when suddenly,
*DING* *DONG*
The bell rang, thrice.
I frowned and got up instantly. Mom followed.
We looked into the front door camera and found a worried Naomi-san standing there.
I exchanged a glance with Mother and instantly opened the door for her.
“Naomi-san?” I asked, seeing tears in her eyes.
She hurriedly stepped forward, holding her phone as she said, “Aki-kun …Yuki…she hasn’t returned and isn’t picking up the phone.”
I frowned…it was already ten on the clock.
My first thought was…did she get into trouble because of the others? They seemed pretty excited about today, so did she go along and get herself into some kind of mess?
Naomi-san was in a panic. Her husband was on the flight, so he couldn’t do anything either.
“W-What should I do? She has never been this late…should I call the police?” She asked.
My mother was trying to comfort her when I told them, “I think I know where she could be. I will go check there and if I can’t find her, let’s call the police.”
I told them and already slipped into my sandals and stepped toward the street.
“Be careful!” Yelled my mom.
I rushed towards the karaoke where they usually go.
Yuki previously mentioned that they generally go to the same place. It was owned by Takuya’s father so they get discounts.
I didn’t know whether I was worried about Yuki or it was because of Naomi-san, whom I saw crying for the first time; my feet never stopped, and I reached the karaoke in five minutes.
A few people were coming out of the karaoke. This side of the city was still bright and bustling.
I pushed open the door and rushed inside.
I didn’t know in which room they were that’s why I was pushing each one of them and checking whether she was inside.
“Hey, you!”
“Fuck off dude!”
“Why…you!” Many cursed and glared since I was trespassing into their private space. But I didn’t care and continued my search until I reached the last room in the corridor.
Without hesitation, I pushed it open too…and I froze.
Just right after the entrance, a familiar brown-haired girl stood on her toes, her face lifted and her lips pressed against a familiar guy’s lips.
The moment doors opened, everyone turned towards me, and Yuki hurriedly separated from Daiki.
The moment her eyes landed on me, she was shocked, “A-Aki-kun?!”
I felt several emotions swirling inside me.
Grief. Betrayal. Hatred. But I settled for anger.
“Are you fucking nuts?!” I roared and took a step forward.
She flinched, and instantly, Daiki stepped in, “Easy there, pal. Did you finally lose your shit to see her going out with a guy she deserves-”
“Shut your crap, Daiki, or I swear one of us will leave this room on a stretcher today,” I growled, no longer holding my anger.
He looked visibly stunned, but I didn’t care about it and turned towards Yuki, “Your mother is scared that something happened to you…crying for you, and you! Since when did you become so irresponsible?”
Her eyes widened at my words as she hurriedly picked up her bag and took out her phone.
“No! The battery is dead.”
I gritted my teeth before taking out my phone and calling her mother.
She picked up instantly,
[H-Hello, Aki-kun?! Did you find her?]
I glared at the girl…and told her, “Yeah. I am bringing her back.”
[Oh thank God! Please return as soon as you can, Aki-kun.]
I disconnected the call and looked at Yuki, “If you are done enjoying your time here, shall we go?”
She hurriedly nodded and picked up her bag.
“I will come with you,” Asakura offered but,
“No, it’s better you don’t. Mom will get more angry so let me go with Aki-kun.” She didn’t leave any room for argument and stepped out.
Without a word, we left the place.
