Chapter 29: Hellish School Trip Approaching
Yesterday was quite surprising when she started crying… I never expected that. And since then, she hasn’t shown up in front of me.
To make amends, I sent her an apology on Line last night, acknowledging that my words had made her cry, but unfortunately, I received no response.
I didn’t mean to say anything hurtful, but I suppose my choice of words was a bit harsh. It’s important to note that she hasn’t done anything wrong either.
Though it’s a concern, I have to admit that today is not the ideal time to dwell on it.
I can’t help but sigh in resignation.
Truth be told, I really don’t want to go to school.
The approaching school trip, which marks the biggest turning point in my high school life, is causing me great distress.
As a loner like myself, the school trip is the worst event imaginable.
Today, we have homeroom dedicated to discussing the trip, and I can’t help but dread it.
A 2-night, 3-day trip to Hokkaido.
I wonder if I’ll be able to survive it…
________“It’s the worst being in the same group as Mamiya. It’s ruining the whole school trip we’ve been looking forward to.”
“Seriously, luck seems to be against me at every turn.”
Well, it feels like I might as well drop dead right here in today’s homeroom session. My energy level is steadily decreasing with every word they utter. I saw this outcome coming since the morning, so it’s not entirely unexpected.
However… even though I anticipated it, when I actually overheard those guys from my group whispering behind my back, all the strength drained from my body. I already feel like I’m on the brink of collapse, stumbling through each moment.
I just can’t… muster the strength to stand up…
“Well, for the groups, let’s assign three boys and three girls to each. Basically, you’ll be sticking with your assigned group for the entire duration of the school trip.”
This situation has been set in motion by the teacher’s words. Well, to be more precise, this situation has been instigated by Sakaki’s subsequent actions.
~”Teacher, I think it would be fair if we drew lots. I’ve got some lottery tickets right here.”~
Sakaki’s words are the root cause of all this…
“Yahoohooooooooo!”
Sakaki is standing right in front of me, releasing a triumphant shout. I can’t help but let out a sigh in response. In Sakaki’s group, there are Moriya, Takasago, Yamamoto, Alice, and a girl named Sasao who seems to be one of Sakaki’s followers.
This lineup is undeniably… too conveniently in favor of Sakaki.
“He definitely rigged it, that guy.”
“Unforgivable. We need a do-over.”
Voices expressing such sentiments can be heard from the surroundings, mostly coming from members of my own group…
“Ha? Drawing lots is the fairest method~”
However, Sakaki continues to prance around, disregarding such voices. Meanwhile, Yamamoto and Alice stand next to him with vacant expressions, lost in their own thoughts…
Following that, various decisions are made, such as room assignments and bus seating arrangements for the school trip, but it seems that our team has yet to be determined.
There were rock-paper-scissors games to determine roommates, and other agreements that really hit me hard… Yeah. Mentally, I’m already teetering on the edge, as if my knees are about to buckle.
However, being a loner has been a significant part of my history. Today, I somehow managed to withstand countless psychological blows and barely hold myself together… Along the way, Yamamoto unexpectedly stood up for me, and Alice offered words of encouragement. That might have made a difference.
“M-Mamiya-kun. Cheer up.”
Even now, Alice gently strokes my back with her small hand… but I’m trying my best not to cry.
I really want to let it all out… I appreciate the gesture, but please, stop.
Will I truly be able to endure this 2-night, 3-day school trip?
Well… I have no other option but to tough it out. Sigh It’s my own fault, but I can’t help feeling down about everything.
