ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー
School had ended and it was homeroom time for Class 1-C. Although the final meeting had just ended, it was still early, and going straight home felt like a waste. In the classroom, warmed just right by the afternoon sunlight, the new students lingered. They were chatting happily in their brief free time.
Since there were only three male students in Class 1-C, a significant number of girls had gathered around them. The girls who had entered outside of the affiliated middle school especially seemed eager to join the circle around the boys. But at the same time, there were girls who grouped together to talk about things that were a little hard to bring up in front of the boys.
Yui and her friend Sanae Tawara were doing just that. They were talking happily together in a corner of the classroom.
“Sanae-chan, today’s recreation was so much fun!”
“Yeah! It was super lively. The third-year senpai were so energetic!”
“Okita-senpai? He was totally into it. Seeing that kind of guy makes me think the hot-blooded sportsman type might actually be kinda nice.”
“Right? I thought so too. That senpai is one to watch.”
“Heh, one to watch? Does that mean you’re going to go after the senpai too, Sanae-chan?”
“Of course. Since the third-year girls are going to get super busy with university entrance exams, this is the perfect chance for us. The boys’ guard will go down, and it’ll be easier to make a move on them.”
“Senpai, huh… Since I’m a transfer student, I don’t know many of them. Is there anyone you’d recommend?”
“Well, top of the list is Yui’s older brother. Then maybe his classmates. The current Class 3-A has this reputation… They said everyone in it is super cool, like jackpot level cool…”
“Like what?”
Sanae suddenly lowered her voice, leaning in as if to share a secret.
(“Actually, one of them turned down my older sister. On White Day.”)
(“Oof. That’s rough. Wasn’t your older sister in 3-A too? So even being in the same grade doesn’t always work, huh?”)
(“Oh, for sure. But my older sister said she confessed knowing she didn’t have much of a chance, so she’s already over it, apparently.”)
(“I see. That’s good then. But hearing that makes me think choosing who to confess to is really hard, huh?”)
(“Yui, you were kind of interested in Sakamoto-kun before, right? Are you still into guys like him?”)
Sanae lowered her voice even more, naming one of the boys in their class.
(“No. I thought he might be my type for a while, but I realized he’s kind of a wimp, so I’m over it. I’m thinking of going in a different direction now.”)
(“A wimp, huh. Yeah, he is pretty indecisive. Actually, I always thought you’d be better off with someone more assertive, someone who would take the lead.”)
(“You think so too? I’m just not used to feelings like this, so I made a bad call.”)
(“Sakamoto-kun is the passive type, so it’s not obvious at first, but once you get to know him, it’s clear how wimp he is. That’s why he’s secretly popular with girls who like taking care of people.”)
(“I didn’t notice that at all at first.”)
(“First impressions are totally different and he’s good-looking too, so it’s understandable. But Yui, you’ve got immunity to pretty faces, right? I mean, you live with your super hot big brother.”)
“Hmm. My big brother is really handsome, even from my point of view as his little sister, but still. He’s my brother.”
Since her brother came up, Yui brought her tone back to normal. Because they went to school together in the morning, the fact that Yuusei was Yui’s older brother had been discovered quickly after her transfer.
And her brother was a well-known figure in the school. From experience, Yui knew that if she whispered too much while talking about him, it would just attract more attention.
“What’s your brother like at home?”
“Umm… Pretty much what you’d expect. He’s kind, airheaded, and has no two-faced side. But he’s not the type to take charge much. Sure,he takes initiative when it’s something he’s interested in, but he’s a little weak when it comes to pressure. Still, I wouldn’t say he’s indecisive.”
“With that face card? His personality is that great? People like that actually exist, huh.”
“He’s a good catch and you get a cute little sister like me as a bonus.”
“If Yui’s the bonus, then that’s a total win. The problem is… Me. Ugh! If only I had enough charm to be chosen by your brother…”
“What do you mean? Sanae-chan, you’re plenty cute. I love your personality too.”
“Thanks, Yui! You’re so sweet, I seriously want you as my little sister. But still, after seeing the girls your brother’s been with, I can’t help but feel… No, I’m sure that I don’t stand a chance.”
“You mean those three senpai? They were all really nice people, but… Well, not exactly average. One of them had an insanely sexy body and it’s all natural.”
“Insane… Yeah, totally. But not just that melon-boobed senpai—there was also that nationwide-level genius known as ‘Modern Zhuge Liang’ and the ex-charismatic president of the Cooking Club who’s still got the whole thing under her thumb. Everyone’s insanely high-level.”
“Seriously? I didn’t know any of that.”
“For real? Yui, you’re kind of a natural airhead too. Must run in the family.”
“Former charismatic president, huh… I was thinking of joining the Cooking Club, but maybe I shouldn’t?”
“She already retired, and from what I’ve heard, she led with charisma, not fear. So I don’t think you have to worry too much.”
“Really? Then I guess it’d be okay if I join the Cooking Club?”
“I’m sure it’ll be fine.”
“Hey now, what are you two whispering about in the corner?”
The one who approached them was Haruka Sagara. She was the caring type. She gave an older sister vibe even though she was the same age as Yui. She was also one of Yui’s close friends.
“I was just wondering what club to join.”
“Weren’t you going for the Cooking Club?”
“That was the plan, but now that the former president is dating my brother, I don’t want it to seem like I’m using a connection to get there or something…”
“You don’t need to worry about that at all. You’re overthinking it.”
“Yeah. Sanae-chan said the same thing.”
“You’re super cute, Yui. You’ll be loved no matter where you go.”
“Hehe. I hope so!”
“Since school finished a bit earlier than usual today, want to stop somewhere on the way home?”
“Ooh, good idea! What should we eat?”
“Hmm… I feel a little hungry. How about Mokudo Burger?”
“Mokudo? I’m in! They’ve got that limited-time pudding shake right now!”
“You and your pudding obsession, Yui. I’m down for Mokudo too.”
“Then it’s deci—”
Just then, the back door of the classroom slid open with a loud clatter, and the once-bustling room fell instantly silent.
“Who’s that?”
“No way! He’s insanely good-looking, like impossibly so!”
And just like that, the energy in the classroom shot through the roof. Standing at the door, drawing everyone’s attention, was Yuusei. He scanned the room like he was looking for someone.
“Onii-chan!”
Yui dashed toward him while calling him. Noticing her, Yuusei’s face lit up with a bright smile.
<Clatter clatter clatter clatter clatter!>
“Yui. Good. You’re still here.”
“I was just chatting with my friends. What brings you to the first-year classroom?”
“It’s not really anything special, but I’m getting out early today too, so I thought maybe we could hang out on the way home.”
“Wow, you came to invite me? That’s perfect. We were just saying we wanted to go to Mokudo. I really want to try their limited-time pudding shake!”
“Pudding shake? That sounds great.”
“Right? Then come with us, Onii-chan!”
“Wouldn’t I be in the way though?”
“I’ll go ask the other two!”
