Chapter 7: Date with Little Sister (Part 1)
On Saturday morning, the sunlight filtering through the window was soft, slipping through the gaps in the curtains and gently illuminating the living room.
The night before, when I told the family I had joined the photography club, all three of them predictably grilled me intensely, and it had been a ordeal.
The dining table held the plates from the breakfast we had just finished, and a slightly quieter atmosphere than usual hung in the air.
“Sorry, Kouta, Mio. Some work came up suddenly…”
Mom, still in her apron with her phone pressed to her ear, hurriedly slung her bag over her shoulder.
“I won’t be back until evening, so you two be good and get along.”
With those parting words, Mom hurried out the front door with pattering footsteps.
Right after that, big sis came down the stairs in her tracksuit, peeking in with her archery club gear slung over her shoulder.
“Well, I’m off to club practice too. Mio, keep an eye on Kouta so he doesn’t do anything weird, okay?”
“Weird stuff… like what?”
“Fufun, I’ll leave that to your imagination, Kouta♪”
Big sis left a provocative smile behind and departed with light steps. The sound of the front door closing echoed, and the house fell utterly silent.
…Leaving just me and Mio.
“…”
“…”
We sat facing each other in the living room, but because of what happened yesterday, the air felt heavy. No, awkward was more like it.
“…Hey,” I opened my mouth.
“So, in the end, it’s just the two of us.”
“…Yeah.”
Mio kept her head slightly lowered, fiddling with the ends of her hair.
“…What should we do? Want to go out and play sometime? The weather outside is nice.”
I had meant it casually. But Mio suddenly looked up and stared at me intently.
“…For real? Just the two of us with big bro?”
“Y-yeah. If you don’t want to—”
“I do! I really want to go!!!”
She latched on more enthusiastically than I expected, and I involuntarily leaned back.
Her eyes shone purely with joy.
“So, where to?”
As I asked while slouching on the sofa, Mio pretended to think for a moment before smiling brightly.
“The zoo!”
“That’s too far if we’re going now.”
“Then the amusement park!”
“Veto!”
“The movies!”
“…Nothing particularly interesting is playing right now.”
When I pointed that out, Mio puffed out her cheeks.
“…Where does big bro want to go?”
“Hmm… How about the shopping mall?”
Mio stared at my face silently for a few seconds. Oh no, it felt like she was judging me strangely.
Eventually, she gave a small laugh and—
“…Sounds good. Anywhere is fun if it’s with big bro.”
“…I-is that so.”
It took us twenty minutes to walk to the shopping mall. As we passed the station and walked along the bustling main street, we naturally got swept up in the crowd. Just being male made me the center of attention.
“…Hey, big bro.”
“What?”
“Let’s hold hands while we walk.”
“Huh? Why?”
“Because there are so many people. …And besides.”
Mio looked up at me with a slight glare and pursed her lips.
“I’ll protect big bro.”
“You’re being way too dramatic.”
“It’s fine. Big bro lacks a sense of danger a bit. Girls are super dangerous, you know!”
As she said that, she gripped my hand tightly.
Her small hand had more strength than I thought.
“No… we’re in public? What if someone we know sees?”
“I’d rather show them off.”
“You…”
Mio showed no sign of letting go.
Feeling the stares from the girls walking around us, I couldn’t settle down at all.
“…And besides.”
Mio continued in a small voice.
“No matter how kind big bro is… if he makes the same face to everyone, I hate that.”
“…Huh?”
“So, remember it properly. Big bro is mine. …I won’t give him to anyone else.”
Those words sent a shiver down my spine.
She said it with a smile, yet there was a strange weight deep in her voice.
With that, she intertwined her fingers further.
…It was a full lovers’ handhold now.
I desperately pretended to be calm for the sake of the people around us, but my heart was pounding honestly.
We passed through the mall’s automatic doors, and the air-conditioned breeze brushed against our skin.
The spacious atrium overflowed with people, filled with lively music and the voices of shop callers.
“Wow… there are really a lot of people, huh.”
“Yeah. Hey, don’t get swept away in the crowd too much.”
“That’s why we’re holding hands, right?”
“…Yes, yes.”
She seemed to think my hand was completely hers now. People around us probably saw us as a normal couple… which made me even more uneasy.
We started by looking at clothes for Mio.
Mio picked up a dress from the hanger and twirled it around to show me.
“Hey, big bro. Do you think something like this would suit me?”
“…Well, it’s not bad.”
“Then I’ll buy it. Because big bro said it suits me.”
“No, why does one word from me decide it?”
“Of course. I want big bro to think I’m cute.”
Don’t say it so casually, you…!
I involuntarily looked away. Why was Mio making my heart race nonstop?
Next, the accessories store.
Mio picked up a pair of matching mugs and held them out to me with a straight face.
“Should we buy these?”
“…No, those are totally for couples.”
“So what? Let’s use them, big bro and me.”
“What are we gonna tell Mom and big sis!”
“‘Because we’re close’ will work.”
“No way it will!”
She pressed on in a tone I couldn’t tell if it was serious or joking.
Because the surrounding shoppers kept glancing over, I started feeling embarrassed instead.
It was past noon. We were both getting a bit hungry, so we decided to grab a light meal at the food court.
Once we sat down, Mio held a spoon and stared at me intently.
“…Here, ahh.”
“Stop that! Think about the people around!”
“Ehehe, then I’ll say it quietly… ahh♡”
“That doesn’t solve anything!”
In the end, under the stares from those around us, I gave in and let her feed me just one bite.
