Chapter 2: Family and Classmates
Before the alarm clock rang, my futon was yanked away with tremendous force.
“Hey, get up, Kouta. You’ll be late for school with your big sister!”
My sister Rika, a second-year high school student one year older than me, stood imposingly by my bedside as usual. She was a woman so full of confidence that even her bedhead looked like intentional styling.
“Big sis… I was still in the middle of a dream.”
“If you have time to dream about being popular with girls, then serve your big sister in reality. Honestly, you’re the family heirloom, after all.”
With that, she started combing my hair with her fingers without asking. I’m not a Rika doll, though—only for you, Rika.
“What nonsense are you saying?”
When I went downstairs, the aroma of breakfast filled the air. In the kitchen stood my mom—Kasumi Takeda—in her apron.
“Good morning, Kouta. Here, my special nutritionally balanced breakfast. Health comes first for boys, you know.”
“Mom… isn’t it unfair that I’m the only one getting the special treatment?”
“Unfair? Listen, Rika and Mio can protect themselves, but you can’t. If I don’t look out for you so the girls don’t crush you, who will?”
She said the most outrageous thing so casually. Even though we lived in an ordinary suburban neighborhood, I felt like she was raising me to be a warrior who could survive the jungle out there.
And finally, my little sister Mio. She was still in middle school, but she was incredibly reliable.
“Big bro, let’s watch the rest of that drama together tonight!!”
“There’s a social game update today, so…”
“No way!! When you get absorbed in your game, you ignore me.”
“Mio! Kouta has important plans, so he’s spending the evening with me!”
“Big sis, what important plans…?”
I leaned my elbows on the table and let out an exaggerated sigh.
It turned into the usual noisy breakfast.
“Sigh… All three of you freeze up and can’t do a thing when it really counts.”
At those words, the whole family froze for a moment.
Mom placed a hand on her cheek and gave a strangely seductive smile.
“…Say something like that, and I might take it seriously, you know?”
My big sis Rika kicked her chair back, approached, and lifted my chin with a sharp tug.
“If that’s a challenge, I’ll accept it. If you insist that much.”
As for my little sister Mio, she puffed out her cheeks and blushed while saying,
“Big bro, that’s… not fair.”
Oh, crap.
I’d meant it as a joke to provoke them, but I’d successfully lit the fuse.
I hurriedly grabbed my chopsticks and slurped down some miso soup with gusto.
“Th-the food’s delicious! Mom’s the best! Big sis and Mio too, haha!”
I tried to laugh it off, but the intense stares from all three directions didn’t soften at all.
The women in this house took me seriously the moment I said one extra word.
—It was beyond saving. But that was my daily life.
The moment I opened the classroom door, I realized it.
—Today was going to be noisy too.
“Kouta, good morning♡”
The first one to rush over was Aya Yoshida, who looked exactly like the quintessential gyaru. She clung to my arm as if it were the most natural thing and wafted a sickly sweet perfume scent my way.
“Hey, you left my line unread yesterday, right? Slow replies are killing me.”
“No, I was just busy with all sorts of stuff…”
“Kouta making excuses is so cheeky~. But it’s cute♡”
Right beside her was Otowa Aida, with her beautiful long black hair and an air that screamed good breeding.
“Kouta, you haven’t turned in your assignments from up until yesterday.”
“Huh, Otowa… sorry, I totally forgot.”
“Really, Kouta is so scatterbrained. …But that’s cute too.”
Her gaze felt incredibly intense.
Then, Yuri Sakura from the track team, brimming with energy, perched on the edge of my desk and offered me her bento.
“Hey, Koutakun, I’ll give you one of my fried chicken pieces, so let me have a bite of your bento?”
This was Mom’s special homemade bento. I couldn’t hand it over. If Mom found out, it’d be a family court.
“S-sorry, not today.”
“Stingy~”
Yuri puffed out her cheeks.
The eyes of all the girls in the classroom, who had been watching our exchange, suddenly pierced toward me all at once.
Otowa, who had been watching from the side, silently slammed her notebook down on my desk.
“You haven’t finished your assignments yet, right? I’ll help you.”
“O-okay…”
“You’re not going to say no, are you?”
Her emotionless, cold eyes approached like they were piercing me. But then she murmured a faint “…cute” at the end, which made it even worse.
At a time like that, I—couldn’t help but trigger my bad habit.
“…If you’re all swarming me like this, why not settle it with a contest? The winner can do whatever she wants with me.”
A moment of silence.
The next instant, the classroom turned into a storm.
“A contest!? That’s on!””Let’s do arm wrestling!””No, it should be a study battle!”
Aya, Otowa, and Yuri all stood up and started debating the rules on their own. Some began warm-up exercises, others sketched out tournament brackets, and the classroom became a battlefield.
“Wait, wait, wait! That was a joke!”
“Taking back something you’ve said? That’s not allowed.”
“Take responsibility!”
“You can’t escape now, Koutakun!”
I slumped face-down on my desk and groaned.
“…I did it again…”
At that moment, the classroom door opened, and our homeroom teacher, Mr. Yamamoto, came in.
“Hey, homeroom’s starting… What is this commotion?”
The girls all shouted at once.
“Teacher! Can we have a contest over Koutakun!?”
“Make the rules fair for us!”
Mr. Yamamoto pressed a hand to his forehead and let out a huge sigh.
“Sigh… Listen, girls. Calm down a little.”
“But…!”
“No buts. Fighting over a boy before class? That would be a huge problem for the other boys.”
The girls grumbled “Grr…” in frustration but reluctantly returned to their seats.
In my heart, I thanked him with all my might.
Mr. Yamamoto glanced my way and muttered under his breath.
“…You’ll really get devoured someday.”
I stayed slumped over my desk and prostrated myself in my mind.
—Next time, I absolutely won’t say anything extra.
I swore that, but I’d probably mess up again…
