Chapter 11: GPS at the Bottom of the Lunchbox
Lunch break.
Amid the classroom’s buzz, Kouta placed his lunchbox on his desk.
(…This feels like déjà vu, doesn’t it?)
As he split his chopsticks, he suddenly recalled his first days after enrolling.
On the day of his first packed lunch after starting school, he had spread out the one Mom prepared in a corner of the classroom.
For some reason, the lunchbox felt unusually heavy.
With a bad premonition, he examined the underside thoroughly after finishing his meal.
“…Huh? What is this?”
A small silver device. The GPS Mom always carried.
He rushed home and confronted her.
“Mom… can you explain this?”
Mom initially played dumb, but soon gave in and
“Kouta’s what worries me. Because… this world is full of girls, and it’s dangerous out there,”
burst into her tearful pleading mode.
–In the end, he earnestly persuaded her with “I’m in high school now too,” and she reluctantly removed the GPS.
She had definitely promised back then that she would never do it again.
Kouta let out a small sigh and opened the lid of his lunchbox.
White rice with tamagoyaki, karaage… the perfect appearance, just like Mom’s style.
But–that weight he felt at the bottom.
He set down his chopsticks and slowly lifted it up.
Sure enough. Something off.
After finishing his lunch, he waited for a moment when no one was watching and carefully flipped it over.
“…Ugh, seriously?”
The compact GPS was taped on just like before.
Moreover, it was even smaller this time, hidden so cleverly that it was impossible to notice at a glance.
Kouta pressed his forehead.
The memory came back vividly. She had cried, apologized, even made a promise… and not even half a month later, this.
He felt a bit angry, but he thought he understood Mom’s worrying nature too.
–Boys are always targets. They need protection.
Using that as an excuse, Mom tried to monitor him around the clock.
Kouta gave a small wry smile and peeled off the GPS with his fingertips.
Amid the lunch break clamor, Kouta quietly called out to Aya, who was fiddling with her phone at the window seat.
She twirled her hair as usual, her flashy nails catching the light, and grinned.
“What’s up, Kouta? You look like trouble.”
“Can we talk in secret for a bit?”
Kouta glanced around in a low voice. If word got out, it would be a hassle.
Aya leaned forward, propping her elbow on the desk.
“What, what? Sounds fun. So, what’s going on–boyfriend troubles?”
Her eyes sparkled with teasing.
Kouta took a breath and briefly explained the lunchbox incident today. He admitted without hiding his ulterior motive that he wanted to use Mom’s unauthorized “surveillance” for a prank in retaliation.
Aya looked surprised for a moment, then laughed more delightedly than he expected.
“Huh~, that’s interesting. So, what do you want me to do?”
“I’d like to place it somewhere girls gather, or maybe a spot that’s a bit ‘adult-oriented.’ I just want to see how Mom reacts.”
Kouta chose his words carefully as he continued.
“Um… you know, Aya, you can draw a crowd, and your style is bold, so it’s easy to ask you. Could you just slip it into your bag or something for a bit? And leave it in places where girls hang out, like spots everyone gathers, or maybe an atmospheric adult-oriented shop?”
Aya rested her chin on her hand, pretending to think.
“Hmm, so basically, you’re turning the ‘being watched’ act against her to mess with Mom? That’s deliciously perfect.”
Her eyes turned serious. She seemed like the type who actually enjoyed pranks like this.
“But, Kouta, isn’t this kinda risky? What if Mom gets serious and starts moving on it?”
“That’s where you show off your skills, Aya. I’ll leave the where to you, so handle it with finesse. Come on, you’re good at this stuff.”
“Sounds good, it’s got thrill. I’m the type who jumps on fun things–but just one condition.”
“Condition?” Kouta leaned in.
“Give me a reward. Like an after-school date, or gaming together at your place.”
Kouta stared at Aya earnestly and ended up laughing.
“If that’s all it takes to get back at Mom, it’s a bargain. Count on you, Aya.”
She nodded lightly and winked.
“Leave it to me. If it turns into something fun, I get to enjoy it too.”
The two met eyes, savoring the secret shared-complici’s quiet satisfaction.
Deep down, Kouta anticipated the situation rolling in an entertaining direction again.
–But at the same time, a slight unease flickered through his mind.
Aya added in a whisper at the end.
“But it’s up to my motivation, so don’t get your hopes up~?”
Kouta shrugged with a laugh and accepted Aya’s offer.
In that instant, amid the classroom’s lively hum, the seed of their little mischief quietly sprouted.
“Oh yeah! My relative runs a hotel. Let’s go together, Kouta.”
“…Wha… what?! No, no, no, we’re still high schoolers!”
“Aw, what are you misunderstanding?”
Aya grinned with the biggest smile imaginable.
“Relax, it’s a normal business hotel. We can just eat snacks there together!”
“Hmm, well, if that’s it, sure.”
Heh, can’t wait to see Mom’s reaction.

Chapter 12: Mom Got Furious
After school, in front of the station.
“…So, we’re really going in here?”
Kouta looked up at the business hotel in front of him, breaking into an odd sweat.
Aya laughed in her usual light tone, holding a convenience store bag in one hand.
“Because, you know, you were the one who said we should prank her, Kouta. Plus, tons of girls come and go here, and it might spark weird imaginations, so if Mom sees it, she’ll definitely panic big time.”
“…Well, yeah, that’s true.”
Thanks to Aya’s relative, whom she had asked in advance, they passed reception smoothly.
Kouta let out a small sigh and got into the elevator.
Inside were just Aya and him. For some reason, it made him oddly tense.
The room was small but tidy.
One bed, a TV, and a small table by the window.
Aya plopped down on the bed as if it were the most natural thing and rummaged through the convenience store bag with a rustle.
“Ta-da! Potato chips, chocolate, cookies! And juice. Kouta, snack party time now.”
“Hey… this is a hotel, you know? Is it okay to do something that might make a mess like this?”
“Aw, come on, it’s fine. It feels like a girls’ night out. I got permission from my aunt. Here, eat some.”
In the end, the two sat on the bed, nibbling on snacks and chatting.
Aya seemed to be having fun as she kept going with lines like “No matter what guys come along, I’m not interested in anyone but you, Kouta!” or “It must be tough for you getting tangled up with Otowa and Yuri like that; why don’t you just go out with me already,” talks that left him at a loss for words.
Talking with Aya was fun in its own way, and he found himself laughing a bit too loudly before he knew it.
(…That said, if Mom checks the GPS right now and comes flying over… that woman might just have a heart attack?)
…Maybe this is going a bit too far…
Evening in the living room.
Kasumi, who had come home early from work, took off her suit jacket and set down her bag.
She casually pulled out her smartphone and opened the dedicated app.
There was a red marker–the GPS icon showing Kouta’s current location.
It had started near the school, but in the brief moment she looked away, it kept moving farther.
“I wonder where he’s going after school today.”
She murmured softly, as if soothing her work fatigue, but her eyes as a mother were serious.
However, the icon on the map stopped at–a spot in front of the station.
Seeing the name of the facility displayed, Kasumi’s hand froze.
“…A hotel?”
For an instant, her breath caught.
She zoomed in on the screen and checked multiple times.
Sure enough, Kouta’s icon was inside that building.
“Wh… why?”
Her heartbeat quickened.
Kouta was still in high school.
Moreover, one of the few “boys” in this world.
For such a son to be in a hotel…
She looked up the hotel name, and while it turned out to be a standard business hotel, Kasumi’s mind was in no state to register that.
The worst possible scenarios flooded her head one after another.
Had he been tricked and dragged in by an older woman?
Was he half-kidnapped by girls from his class?
Or perhaps, Kouta himself…!?
Kasumi covered her face, her knees going weak.
“…No, calm down… calm down…”
She repeated deep breaths and checked the screen once more.
But the icon remained unmoving, right in one of the hotel’s rooms.
“Kouta belongs to me!!”
“Mmm… potato chips are definitely best in consommé flavor.”
“Right? Our tastes match after all~ . Ah, hand me the juice.”
They sat side by side on the bed, munching snacks while playing videos on their phones.
Just an ordinary time like that.
…Or so it should have been.
“Yawn… doing this kinda feels like a school trip.”
“I get it! Just eating snacks in a hotel room gets you all excited.”
–That was the moment.
BAM BAM BAM BAM!!
The room door was pounded with such force it seemed like it might be kicked down.
“Koutaaaaaaa!!”
“Wha…!? M-Mom!?”
The ear-piercing roar made him spill the potato chips without thinking.
Aya shrank back with a “Eek!”
“What do you think you’re doing!? A hotel!? With a girl!? No way, no way…!”
From beyond the door came Kasumi’s hysterical voice.
It was like the bellow of a demon.
“Wait, hold on, Mom! This is different, really different!”
“What’s different about it!? Do you think you can fool your mother’s eyes!?”
Aya whispered to him with a pale face.
“Kouta… this is bad, she’s totally lost it…!”
“No no no no, Aya, calm down!
Mom, this is just a stupid prank…!”
“Who the hell goes into a hotel as a stupid prank, you idiot Koutaaaa!!”
BANG!! BANG!!
The doorknob rattled violently.
If it had been a thin wooden door, it probably would have flown off by now.
“Oh crap… Mom’s completely flipped out…!”
“Kouta, can I go home…?”
“No way that’s happening! And where would you even go home from in this situation!”
“Open this door, Kouta!! Explain yourself right now!!”
The room’s atmosphere turned into a battlefield in an instant.
In the hotel room, snacks scattered on the bed, Aya with a terrified face, him drenched in sweat,
and from beyond the door–the voice of his enraged mother.
“Eek, eek… Kouta’s mom is seriously scary…!”
“C-Calm down, Aya! Do not open that door no matter what! If you do, we’re done for!!”
BAM BAM BAM!!
“Koutaaaa!! Show your face right now!!”
Kasumi’s scream and the creaking sound of the door.
It was like a scene from a horror movie.
An unpleasant sweat trickled down his back.
“Wh-What do we do… it’s hopeless, I’m going home!!!”
“Aya! Calm down, don’t do that one thing–”
Click.
“–Ah.”
Aya’s trembling hand had unlocked the door.
The next instant.
CRASH!!
Kasumi burst in with a face twisted in fury.
“…Kouta.”
She glared at him with bloodshot eyes.
Aya let out a “Eeeeek!” and dove behind the bed.
–It was completely over.
