ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー
One day during chemistry class, the teacher declared to the whole class.
“—So that’s why, Hirakawa, come to the staff room during lunch break.”
It was an unpleasantly familiar line. This could only mean one thing: a warning about supplementary lessons or failing grades. Just like what happened to Riria the other day, I was clearly the next target for the chemistry teacher.
Even though I was technically in the science track, the truth was… I was absolutely terrible at chemistry. On top of that, due to a recent incident, I had fallen behind in class. I was managing okay in other subjects, but once I stumbled in a subject I struggled with, I just couldn’t bring myself to get back on track quickly.
As a result, my grades in chemistry kept getting worse, and the worse they got, the harder it became for me to touch the subject at all… It was a vicious cycle indeed. I seriously needed to do something about it. Even Riria had overcome her struggles with math and was on track to avoid a failing grade. If I failed now, I’d just be embarrassing myself.
When I asked the teacher in the staff room if the teacher had any good study tips, this was the reply I got.
“You should get someone who’s good at it to teach you.”
Absolutely correct. Just like Riria did, I needed to ask someone for help. Now then—who would I ask to tutor me? The first person who came to mind was Ayame-san. She gave off the vibe of being completely confident with science subjects, so she seemed like the perfect person to teach me. She was also really good at explaining things.
However… Getting to Ayame-san’s house was a trek. Just getting there and back from the nearest station would take an hour and a half and there was the cost of transportation to consider. Sure, it was just a few hundred yen, but that amount of money would cause a big dent on a high schooler’s wallet.
“Sensei, do you know if there’s anyone in our class who’s good at chemistry?”
I decided to just ask straight out. A teacher would probably know who had good grades in chemistry.
“That’d be Nishimeya, wouldn’t it? Her chemistry is good enough to the point she could get into the University of Tokyo if she wanted to pursue a chemistry major.”
“Huh…? Nishimeya-san is that good?”
“Yeah. If she were just a bit better in other subjects, she might be the first student from our school to get into Tokyo University. But hey, everyone has their own strengths and weaknesses.”
I was shocked by the unexpected answer. Sure, I had the impression that Hinayo studied hard. But I figured she was just near the top of the class, maybe somewhere decently ranked in the grade. But when I actually looked into it… Wow. She was at a level where she could aim for the hardest university in Japan, even if it was only in chemistry. If I had someone that could be deemed as a ‘Chemistry Master’ near me, of course the most logical move was to rely on her to help me study.
As soon as I got back to the classroom from the staff room, I walked up to Hinayo and bowed deeply.
“Please teach me chemistry…!”
The air froze. Hinayo looked like she didn’t know how to respond and my stomach, empty from skipping lunch, chose that moment to growl loudly. This might’ve been the most uncool moment of my life, but it was still better than failing chemistry. I absolutely wanted to avoid a blemish on my record.
After a long silence, Hinayo finally spoke.
“U-Um, Hirakawa-kun, please raise your head…”
She seemed genuinely flustered, so I slowly lifted my face. Her bangs, which she’d cut recently, had already grown a bit. I noticed that her bangs were once again starting to cover about half of her eyes.
“I-I’m happy to help explain anything you don’t understand in chemistry. I have no idea if I’m good enough to be of any help, though… I’d feel bad if there’s someone else more qualified than me…”
“Nope. It has to be you, Nishimeya-san. You’re the only one.”
“Ha…”
“I asked the teacher, and they said your chemistry skills are amazing. I figured you’d be the perfect person to learn from.”
“Haauu…”
Hinayo’s face turned red. Anyone would be embarrassed hearing themselves praised like that behind their back.
Well, I’ve never really been praised like that by my parents or anything either.
“Anyway, do you think you could maybe start tutoring me after school today? Of course, I’ll make sure to give you something in return.”
“N-Not just today, I’d be happy to help you anytime…”
“Ahaha~ But if I rely on you forever, I’d be causing you trouble, Nishimeya-san. If I keep relying on you, the debt will keep piling up! I won’t be able to repay the favor.”
“(It’s fine… We could just stay together forever…)”
“Hm? Nishimeya-san, did you say something?”
“N-No, it’s nothing! Anyway, today, right? That’s totally fine by me.”
“Really? Thank you! You’re really helping me a heap…”
“B-By the way, where should we do it…?”
“Anywhere’s fine. It’s been getting hot lately, so somewhere cool would be nice.”
“I-I-In that case… My room would be…”
“Your room’s packed with manga and novels… The temptation would be too great there…”
Hinayo’s room was like a mini manga café given her massive collection. If I so much as glanced at a manga, I knew I’d end up reading it and that’d be the end of our studying lesson. I still hadn’t caught up with the latest volume of AraShota too. It was clear that any place filled with distractions would be a no-go.
“Then how about my place? But you’d have to come over to my place, Nishimeya-san.”
“I’ll go! I’ll go with pleasure! I’ll definitely go!”
“Y-You don’t have to sound so excited… It’s just a normal house, there’s nothing exciting about it…”
Her tone had a little… Something extra to it, but I decided not to dwell on it. With this, my chemistry study plans were set. Perfect.
“B-By the way…”
“Yeah?”
“Will anyone be home at your place today…?”
“Hmm… Let me think. My dad’s working the night shift, so he’s definitely not going to be there and I think my mom might be out too.”
“(Wait… Does that mean the house will be empty today…!?)”
“Nishimeya-san? Did you say something?”
“N-No, I just thought if someone was home, I should at least say hello to them…”
“You’re so proper, Nishimeya-san. You don’t have to worry so much about my parents.”
And so, it was decided that we’d have a study session at my house today. Well, I was sure Hinayo would teach me seriously, so it wouldn’t turn out like it did with Riria the other day.
…It wouldn’t, right? Yeah, it wouldn’t.
That part was important, so I said it twice.
