ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー
A peaceful week had passed, and today was Friday, the weekend. As I was eating lunch in the classroom as usual, a message popped up on my phone.
The sender was Ayame-san.
I figured things would get annoying if Haruto saw it, but that worry turned out to be unnecessary as he had already finished his lunch and gone to the gym to play basketball for what he called “self-practice session.”
Even after stuffing himself full, he kept moving without passing out—that was Haruto Fujisaki for you.
I unlocked my phone and checked the message again. Ayame-san’s icon was a childhood photo of her and Haruto together.
Just how much of a bro-con is this person?
『Hey there! About that thank-you thing from the other day… Are you free tomorrow, Asahi-kun?』
『I’m free.』
『Then I’ll treat you to a nice lunch, so can you meet me in front of the station at noon?』
『Got it. I’m looking forward to it.』
The other day, I had given Ayame-san some advice on how to be less dependent on Haruto, and apparently, this was her way of thanking me. I didn’t think I had given particularly good advice, so she didn’t have to thank me or anything, but the words “nice lunch” definitely made me waver.
The pull of delicious food was undeniable.
After happily sending my reply to Ayame-san, I happened to glance at the seat next to me, where Hinayo sat. She had seemed a bit down all week. She kept staring at her phone screen, occasionally sighing.
Maybe I should say something.
“Hey, Nishimeya-san. You don’t look too happy. What’s wrong?”
“Hahii!? N-No, it’s nothing…?”
“Yeah? If something’s bothering you, I can listen.”
“I-I-I’m fine!”
“You don’t seem fine though.”
“It’s r-really nothing serious. Uh, uh… My GPS is… No, wait… Oh! Uh, it’s just that… My part-time job manager is kinda strict, and it’s been tough… Haha…”
“Oh, your karaoke job?”
“Y-Yeah…”
“I see. So that’s what’s been getting you down.”
“W-Well…”
There were difficult people everywhere. The more you dwelled on it, the worse it got. In my opinion, it was better to just have some fun and forget about it.
“When things get like that, I think the best thing to do is have fun. It’s a waste to spend your high school life worrying about stuff like that.”
“Y-Yeah, I guess… But I don’t really have any friends, so I don’t get many chances to go out and have fun…”
“Then how about coming out with me tomorrow? I have lunch plans, so it’d have to be after that though.”
“A-Are you sure?”
“Of course. We can go shopping, the arcade, whatever you like.”
“Th-Then… How about a movie? There’s one I want to see, but when I’m alone, I just think I’ll wait until it’s on streaming…”
“Sounds good. Let’s go for one with a great sound system, then.”
“Th-Then, I think the evening screening would be best. I-I’ll check the times and message you later…!”
“Great, thanks. I’m looking forward to it.”
It was the perfect way to spend a Saturday. Lunch with Ayame-san, then a movie with Hinayo. The more events, the better.
Feeling excited, I went through the afternoon classes with glee. Though… I couldn’t help but occasionally glance at Hinayo, who kept looking at her phone with a serious expression on her face.
Her manager must really be a pain in the ass. Poor girl.

By late Saturday morning, I was waiting for Ayame-san in front of the station. She had called it a “nice lunch,” so my expectations were high. My stomach was in perfect condition. Sushi? Yakiniku? Bring it on.
“Sorry to keep you waiting!”
“Good afternoon, Ayame-san. I haven’t been waiting long though.”
“Really? I have this bad habit of cutting things close, so I always end up making people wait.”
“I’m the same way, so it’s no problem.”
“Oh, nice! Then we’re even.”
As we chatted, a van with the name of a restaurant on it stopped right in front of us.
Wait, I know that name. That’s a fancy Chinese restaurant!
“And today’s lunch comes with a pick-up service!”
“For real…?! They’re sending us a car to take us to the restaurant? This feels like VIP treatment!”
“I know, right? It’s got that rich and fancy vibe.”
“Are you sure about this? Just from looking at this pick-up service alone, this place seems expensive…”
“It’s fine, it’s fine! This restaurant is part of the same chain as my workplace, so I get an employee discount. Plus, the lunch menu is pretty reasonable.”
“I-I see…!”
And so, thanks to Ayame-san’s generosity, I climbed into the luxury Chinese restaurant’s pick-up van.
I loved Chinese food. Even simple dishes like fried rice or stir-fried vegetables tasted completely different from what you could make at home. I wondered what kind of food they would serve there? If they brought out karaage or yurinchi (crispy fried chicken with scallion soy sauce), I’d be over the moon. If they had a Peking duck, I might just ascend to heaven right here and there.
Fried chicken is my weakness after all.
With those thoughts making my stomach rumble, the van headed toward the restaurant. Though, to be honest, what was bouncing more than my excitement was Ayame-san’s chest, jiggling in accordance with the vibrations of the car.
