“Pleasure CLUB” was a nationwide chain of internet cafés. It had the largest manga collection in the industry, and recently, some locations even offered darts and billiards. The food menu was also impressive, with their French fries being so famous that they had been praised on TV.
Now that I think about it, between the karaoke place the other day, McDonald’s earlier, and now this, I feel like I’ve been surrounded by French fries lately. Oh well.
Upon entering the store, we were required to install a smartphone app that served as a membership card. These days, everything was in an app. Not having to carry around a physical card was convenient, but if I didn’t organize my home screen, it was easy to lose track of where everything was.
“—Then you’ll be in booth number 72 in the back, a pair booth. Please note that minors are not allowed to stay past 10 PM.”
“Okay.”
After receiving a brief explanation of the rules at the reception desk, Riria took the receipt. On the way to the booth, we stopped by the drink bar to grab something. Since I had already had coffee earlier, I opted for melon soda.
The melon soda from drink bars is always so good. It feels like it has some special nutrients that the bottled version doesn’t. Well, it’s probably just my imagination though.
“Huh, so this is what a pair booth looks like.”
“This is my first time in a pair booth too. I usually just take the cheapest open seat whenever I go to a net café.”
“Huh? So guys go to net cafés too. I guess there are ‘men’s seats’ and ‘men’s discounts’ these days, huh?”
“M-Men’s seats…? Men’s discounts…?”
“Yeah? Must be nice, huh? Wish there were more ladies’ discounts.”
“Ah… Ahaha…”
In the original world, female-only seats and ladies’ discounts were the norm, so hearing about a men’s discount felt kind of strange.
Wait, does that mean guys get discounts at movie theaters and amusement parks too…? That’d be amazing. I should go see a movie sometime.
“Alright, I’m gonna go grab some manga. What about you, Hirakawa-kun?”
“Ah, I’ll wait here for now. I’ll watch over our stuff.”
“Roger that! Be right back.”
Riria opened the booth door, slipped on the provided slippers, and dashed toward the bookshelves. That aside, this was my first time using a booth seat at a net café—let alone a pair booth. Unlike the simple partitioned booths in some places, this one felt more like an actual small room. As expected from a major chain, the facilities were on a different level.
The space was about the size of a four-and-a-half tatami mat room, featuring a flat seat large enough to lie down on comfortably. There was also a floor chair, making it perfect for reading manga. On top of that, the booth had a fairly high-spec PC and a large monitor. If money weren’t an issue, it seemed like a place where someone could easily spend hours in.
For now, I decided to fiddle with the computer until Riria returned. Apparently, the café’s entire book collection could be searched online. How convenient. I wasn’t particularly planning to read any manga, but I figured I might come across something interesting while browsing. So, I pulled up the weekly manga ranking page. The rankings were divided into “male-oriented” and “female-oriented” categories. I decided to start with the male-oriented section.
“Oh, it looks like it’s mostly classic shounen manga. Glad to see some things haven’t changed.”
As expected, the top-ranking titles were from popular shounen magazines. Scrolling further down, I saw entries from seinen magazines, four-panel gag comics, and various other genres. But it was around this point that I started to feel a disconnect between this world and the original world.
“Huh? The romance manga in the rankings… The girls on the covers don’t seem to be showing much skin…. And the titles and summaries… Don’t they feel more like shoujo manga?”
In my original world, male-oriented romcoms always had some degree of fanservice. It wasn’t unusual to see heroines in swimsuits on the covers. In fact, in seinen magazines, catching a glimpse of a nipple or two was almost a given.
But in this gender-reversed world, that wasn’t the case. Rather, the male-oriented romance manga seemed to tone down female exposure, focusing more on the process of falling in love, the situations, and the emotional buildup. I didn’t have any issue reading shoujo manga to begin with, so that part was fine by me, but I’d rather not read stories where the male protagonist was overly timid or weak-willed.
“…Wait a second. If this is what male-oriented manga looks like, then wouldn’t female-oriented manga be the complete opposite?”
With that thought, I clicked on the female-oriented rankings. What filled my screen was exactly what I had expected. Messy, dramatic affairs. Pure-hearted, classic love stories. Chaotic romantic comedies… Almost everything was romance, with a heavy emphasis on sexual content. I had already gotten a sense that the women in this world were more… Forward, based on what Riria and Hinayo werelike, but to think that their entertainment consumption was just as intense…
Even though the stories were mostly erotic, the ones showing more skin were the men. Sure, women might enjoy this, but for me, it didn’t offer much appeal. In both the male and female rankings, nothing quite suited my taste.
I had thought a gender-reversed world would be heaven, but it turned out the kind of entertainment I used to enjoy would be harder to find now. I sighed and looked up at the ceiling.
“Damn it… I didn’t expect this kind of drawback… Wait a minute…?”
A thought struck me. In my original world, some women had a strong preference for stories about romantic relationships between men—so-called “BL” fans, or “fujoshi.” Their presence was significant, spanning both fan-made and commercial works, and had grown into a massive industry focusing solely on BL works. If the dynamics were reversed in this world, then wouldn’t stories about romantic relationships between women—what the original world called “yuri”—be just as dominant?
I had always enjoyed manga with lots of female characters, whether it was slice-of-life, sports, or romance. If you asked me whether I liked yuri or not… Yeah, I definitely liked it. If the power of fujoshi—or whatever the equivalent term for them in this gender-reversed world was—had truly amassed significantly just like they had done in the original world, then there had to be an abundance of top-tier yuri content as well
I typed “yuri” into the search bar. And sure enough, the results flooded in—countless yuri works. There were even specialized labels dedicated to them. Curious, I expanded my search beyond manga. Anime, novels, doujinshi, ASMR voice works… The sheer volume of content was endless.
The guys in this world were truly impressive. They are absolute legends.
I eagerly dove into the search results, feeling as if I had struck gold. Before I realized it, I had stumbled onto a page featuring live-action videos with explicit scenes—essentially, yuri-themed adult videos. I knew, technically speaking, I shouldn’t be watching this at my age, but instincts were hard to fight. The yuri content in this world was unbelievably refined. The passion of the creators was on another level.
Damn… This is insanely hot…
I found myself completely engrossed with the yuri content. And then, suddenly… The booth door swung open. Riria walked in.
Shit. The worst person, at the worst possible time.
She glanced at the computer monitor, then gave me an incredulous look.
“Huh…? Whoa, Hirakawa-kun, so you watch that kind of stuff…”
“W-wait! Thi-This…. This is not what you think…!”
“Well… I mean, you’re a guy and everyone has their own preferences, but… I’d rather you not watch that in front of me…”
She was clearly put off and I couldn’t blame her. If I flipped the situation around to my original world, it’d be like me walking in on Riria watching a gay adult video and getting all excited over it. …Yeah. That’d be seriously awkward.
I immediately apologized, bowing my head repeatedly, and shut off the monitor. From now on, I’d have to watch yuri videos again in secret. I made that promise to my ‘little me.’
Alright, time to reset my focus and read some shounen manga instead.…But man, this room felt kinda hot.
