ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー
In the end, things became awkward between Riria and I after that. So, we quickly left the karaoke place. The next day, I felt really depressed as I went to school, worried that someone might have tattled about what happened. But by the time lunchtime arrived, nothing had happened.
No, no, normally if you got caught doing something like that, you’d at least get a scolding or two, right? During class, I noticed Riria glancing at me several times, but it seemed like she hadn’t been called out by the teacher either.
Could it be that no one reported us…? Is that even possible?
“…Thanks for the meal.”
“Asahi, are you okay? You didn’t even finish your favorite karaage.”
“Yeah, well… I was just lost in thought.”
“If you’re worried about something, you can talk to me, you know? Keeping it bottled up will just make it harder on you.”
“N-No, it’s fine, really. It’s not something you need to worry about, Haruto… Hahaha.”
“Really?”
As usual, I was eating lunch with Haruto, but I was too preoccupied with yesterday’s events to focus on my food. It was rare for me to not focus on eating my karaage. The fact that nothing had happened despite what we did felt way too weird. Hence why I was on edge, thinking that something bad was bound to happen sooner or later. During lunch, my eyes met Riria’s a few more times, but she didn’t seem at ease either. Her expression was completely devoid of any amusement.
If the situation weren’t so tense, I’d say her face right now was almost comically funny. But unfortunately, I wasn’t in any position to laugh about it either. In a world where gender roles were reversed, it was usually the girl who got blamed first in situations like this. If Riria got summoned by the guidance counselor or the grade head, I’d have to go and bow my head too. The sooner we dealt with this, the better. But in the end, nothing happened, and the school day ended without incident.
At this point, it was starting to seem like we might actually get away with it. Riria even casually mentioned that she was heading to a family restaurant with her usual friends to chat and left just like that.
If she’s acting that carefree, maybe I should just go home too.
Just as I thought that and stood up, a girl sitting beside me suddenly called out to me.
“H-H-H-Hirakawa-kun… C-c-can I talk to you for a moment…?”
“Nishimeya-san…? What’s wrong?”
The one who spoke to me was Nishimeya, the girl who sat to my right. She had an unassuming, plain aura about her. Her long black hair was completely undecorated, with bangs so long that her eyes were barely visible. On top of that, she wore oversized Wellington-style glasses, making it impossible to read her expression. Even coming from me, someone who wasn’t the most sociable, she gave off serious introvert vibes.
This might actually be the first time I’ve seen her talking properly.
“U-Um… I… I-I have…S-something I need to… Talk to you about…”
“Are you okay, Nishimeya-san? Your face is bright red. Do you have a fever…?”
“I-I-I’m… f-fine…”
“No, no, you’re definitely not fine. You’re slurring your words. Come on, let’s go to the nurse’s office. I’m a health committee member, after all.”
I decided to take Nishimeya-san to the nurse’s office. Unfortunately, the school nurse wasn’t there, so I had her lie down on an empty bed.
“Sorry, Nishimeya-san. I should’ve noticed you weren’t feeling well earlier…”
I had been so distracted by yesterday’s events and Riria’s every move that I completely failed to notice that the girl sitting next to me was obviously having a fever. As a health committee member, that was a major oversight on my part. I quickly handed her a thermometer and had her check her temperature
After a few beeps, the result showed that her fever wasn’t actually that high.
“Hmm, it’s not as bad as I thought, but it could still go up later, so you should rest for now. Should I contact your parents?”
“I-I’ll be fine… B-but more importantly… I… I need to talk to you…”
“Oh, right. You did say you had something to tell me. Just don’t push yourself, okay?”
“U-Um… Hirakawa-kun… A-about… yesterday…”
The moment Nishimeya-san uttered the word “yesterday,” I felt my heart tighten, as if the Grim Reaper himself had just grabbed my heart.
Yesterday…? Did I talk to Nishimeya-san at all yesterday…? I dug through my memories, trying to recall what had happened the day before. We hadn’t spoken during class or lunch, so the only time I could have interacted with Nishimeya-san was after school. I went to karaoke with Riria, listened to a few of her songs, shared a melon soda from the drink bar with her…And then, well, things kind of escalated from there…
And just when things were starting to heat up between Riria and me… Oh, right. The staff brought in some fries.
…Wait a second?
That staff member had a kind of gloomy aura… And she was wearing glasses too… Someone like that… The staff felt oddly familiar to me…
I turned to look at Nishimeya-san again. That overwhelming introverted aura, the Wellington-style glasses, the long bangs covering her eyes… There was no doubt about it. The karaoke staff who had brought in the fries yesterday was Nishimeya-san.
This was bad. She had witnessed everything between Riria and me and since she was a staff member, handing over security camera footage to the school would be a piece of cake for her.
Right now, this quiet, introverted girl held absolute power over my fate.
What is this? Am I in serious trouble here?
