“…So? Why are we at a karaoke place?”
A few days had passed since then. After school, Riria had called me out. Since we had officially become physically involved the other day, I naturally assumed she wanted the same thing today. But instead, she brought me to a karaoke place near the station. In the dimly lit room, Riria picked up the song selection remote and started choosing songs.
“Hey, did you listen to what I was saying at lunch the other day?”
“Lunch? Oh, about that group date or whatever…”
“Yes! I don’t know why, but everyone seems to love group dates. I swear they have them every month.”
“O-Oh, sounds like a lot.”
“To be honest, I never really wanted to go to one, but this time, I thought maybe I should give it a try.”
“I see… And what does that have to do with us being here at karaoke?”
Riria smirked and said,
“You still don’t get it?”
No, if I did, I’d be way too quick on the uptake. I’m not some all-knowing boyfriend here.
“The group date is being held at a karaoke place! So, this is like a practice run.”
“Then just say that from the start.”
“If you think about it, it should’ve been obvious the moment we got here.”
“It wasn’t!”
“Well, putting that aside, I’m not sure how well I’ll do at the group date, so I figured I should practice now.”
“If it’s just singing, you could practice alone. Karaoke during weekday afternoons is pretty cheap for solo sessions.”
“Th-That’s not the point!”
I was about to ask what exactly was the point, but I figured I wouldn’t get the answer I wanted, so I let it go. Riria Sotogahama was always hard to grasp in some way.
“A-Anyway, I just want you to listen and tell me if my singing is terrible. I don’t go to karaoke often, so I have no idea how I sound.”
“That’s fine, but… What if it turns out you’re bad at singing?”
“Then I’ll just practice playing the tambourine instead so I don’t have to sing at the group date.”
“I can see you’re totally looking down on tambourines.”
“For your information, I was a tambourine pro in elementary school music class.”
That probably just means she was so bad at the recorder and keyboard harmonica that the teacher gave her something else to do…
I held back from saying that out loud and sighed as I glanced at Riria, who looked oddly proud of herself.
…Well, of course, it’s not like I came here with zero expectations.
A teenage boy and girl alone in a closed space like a karaoke booth. Depending on the mood, something could happen… Maybe. Then again, these places usually had surveillance cameras, so there was a chance nothing could happen at all… Still, as a perfectly normal teenage boy with the moral value of the original world, it was impossible not to entertain certain thoughts.
Riria entered her first song. It was the theme song from a recently popular movie.
Her singing ability was average. She wasn’t so tone-deaf that it was unbearable, but she also wasn’t some viral-level singer. Just a typical high school girl’s voice. With this level of singing, she wouldn’t have any trouble having fun at a group date.
“S-So? Was my singing bad?”
“Not bad at all. As long as you pick upbeat songs, you’ll be fine.”
“Really!? Alright, then I’ll practice some more energetic songs!”
She eagerly picked up the remote again and selected an upbeat song from a popular Japanese rock band. Whether it was because I had complimented her or not, Riria looked genuinely happy. Not that I was even sure I had actually complimented her. She ended up singing three more songs. Her singing was fine, and the songs were all well-known, so she wouldn’t completely bomb at the group date.
“Phew, I’m exhausted.”
“Good job.”
“I’m gonna grab a drink to hydrate. Do you want anything, Hirakawa-kun?”
“Ah, no, I’ll get mine myself.”
“No, no, this is part of my group date technique!”
“It is?”
“Yep. Casually getting a drink for the guys along with my own… It’s part of ‘girl power.’”
“O-Oh…”
Wait, does ‘girl power’ in this world mean something different from what I knew? Well, whatever.
Since I was in the mood for something fizzy, I asked her to get me a melon soda. With her gone, I had some free time. I was also feeling a bit hungry, so I considered ordering some food. Modern karaoke places let you order everything through your phone, which was surprising to me. I tried to remember the last time I went to karaoke, but it must’ve been so long ago that I couldn’t recall.
I really was an introvert, huh?
I scanned the QR code with my phone and ordered a large serving of fries. Just as I finished ordering, Riria returned with the drinks. She held a drink in each hand—one was my melon soda, and the other…
“Thanks… Wait, you got melon soda too, Riria-san?”
“Yep. This is also a group date technique.”
“H-Huh…”
“It’s called the ‘mirroring effect.’ By mimicking the other person’s actions or choices, you can build a stronger connection with them.”
“You sure know a lot about this stuff…”
“Fufufu… Knowledge is everything!”
Riria looked smug. No, actually, in her case, the problem wasn’t gathering too much knowledge. It was that she over-prepared and never actually put it into practice. Even in the original world, there were plenty of guys who were loaded with erotic knowledge yet hardcore virgins through and through. I couldn’t shake the feeling that the same thing was happening right now.
Technically speaking, Riria wasn’t a virgin anymore, but it seemed doing it once wasn’t enough to change a person that much.
“Knowing a bunch of techniques is great and all, but isn’t it kind of pointless to use them on me? Shouldn’t you save them for your real target?”
“If I can’t pull them off properly with you, Hirakawa-kun, there’s no way I can reel in my real target with these techniques, right?”
“…Fair point, I guess.”
Riria’s real target was a tall, lean, buff guy. To her, I—a completely average nobody—wasn’t even on her radar. I was beneath her. I was just a guy she slept with, nothing more. If she couldn’t make her moves work on someone as low-tier as me, there was no chance they’d work on her real target. Riria’s logic was airtight. For now, Riria and I clinked glasses and quenched our thirst with ice-cold melon soda.
“You’re not gonna sing, Hirakawa-kun?”
“Nah, I’m bad at singing. Don’t really know many songs either.”
“Ehh, come on, you should sing since we’re here! Look, this one’s a duet. How about it? Don’t you think it’d work?”
Riria, holding the karaoke remote, suddenly closed the distance to show me the screen.
The moment our bodies touched, I secretly felt a little jolt. This was probably one of those mixer techniques or something.
“N-No, I’m good. I’m terrible at singing…”
“It’s fine if you’re bad! It’s just me here, right?”
“I’d rather not sing at all than let you hear my terrible singing…”
“That’s not true! Come on, let’s sing together—this one, this one!”
With that, Riria started poking at my body. Was this another one of those moves? Some skinship tactic to boost the other person’s affection? She’d clearly done her homework. She was a pretty diligent one indeed! As I gently brushed off the idea of singing, Riria kept inching closer. The karaoke room had a long bench, but she eventually cornered me at the very end.
“N-No, I said I’m not singing. Isn’t this supposed to be your practice anyway, Sotogahama-san?”
“Oh, fine—if you’re gonna resist that much, I guess there’s no helping it.”
“Exactly, so I’m not singing. You go ahead and practice, Sotogahama-san.”
“Got it. Then I’ll practice to my heart’s content.”
In that instant, Riria flashed a sly grin. Wondering what was about to happen, I barely had time to react before she undid my belt and slipped her hand into my pants.
“H-Hey, practice? You mean that kind of—”
“Shh, quiet. They’ll hear us.”
“N-No, there’s gotta be surveillance cameras or something. This is bad!”
“It’s fine. This spot’s a blind spot for the cameras—I checked.”
She really didn’t need to do her homework that thoroughly, but as Riria touched me, my body started reacting honestly despite my reluctance.
“Well, well, Hirakawa-kun, looks like you’re secretly looking forward to it after all.”
“S-Shut up. You’re the one who’s too eager, Sotogahama-san.”
“Look at this—it’s already getting hard down here.”
“…Don’t say it, it’s embarrassing.”
During our first time, I’d had a slight edge in control. But as she got more comfortable, Riria started wanting to take the lead. According to her, it wasn’t cool unless the girl took charge. Well, being passive wasn’t so bad, I figured. Since I didn’t have any strong preferences, I let Riria have her fun teasing me. The way her hands moved over me was oddly erotic—probably the result of all her studying.
Damn it, she’s weirdly good at this.
It was impossible not to get worked up (not that I minded). As we toyed with each other’s bodies, Riria’s breaths gradually grew heavier. By then, neither of us could hold back anymore. Just as we were about to bare our most intimate parts and get started, the karaoke room door swung open.
Oh crap, I forgot I ordered fries…
It was a staff member—a woman, no less.
“Here’s your mountain of fries—”
“Ah…”
“Ah…”
The employee caught sight of our little escapade, set the plate of fries down, and scurried off in embarrassment. That was insanely awkward. But she didn’t scold us? Would she report it to the school later or something? Either way, we’d definitely landed ourselves in a mess.
Still, that employee… I felt like I recognized her from somewhere…?
