ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー
I, Sonia Suolahti, was extremely and deeply troubled. It was not because my sworn enemy, Fiorenza, had come to Liseben. No. While that was certainly a major concern, it was not the most pressing issue at the moment.
“Those damnable elves…!”
The problem was that my friend, Gilberto, was in an outrageous state. In the small room we often used for private conversations, she was drinking as though she were bathing in alcohol. On top of that, she kept smoking between drinks, filling the room with smoke until it felt like someone had set off a smokescreen. The devastation was severe. Even I had never seen Gilberto like this before.
This was bad. Very bad. I wanted to discuss countermeasures against her and Fiorenza, but no matter how I looked at it, this was not the time. She was gulping down alcohol while spitting curses like, “Those damn elves… I won’t forgive them.”
As for Fiorenza herself, after dining at the lord’s manor, she had departed for the church in Carrera City. Thanks to my strong insistence, I had barely managed to avoid the disaster of that woman staying at the manor. Rotten or worldly as she might be, she was still, in name at least, a cleric—so having the church deal with her was only proper.
“If only those bastards hadn’t been there…! If only they hadn’t been there!”
“W-well, calm down, Gilberto.”
Breaking out in a cold sweat, I tried to restrain her.
“How am I supposed to stay calm!? If those rotten long-eared freaks with their stupid headgear hadn’t interfered, I could have fulfilled my wish!”
“F-fulfilled your wish!?”
I nearly dropped the goblet in my hand. Thank goodness I hadn’t taken a sip. If I had, I surely would have sprayed it everywhere.
“Don’t tell me… You mean a proposal?”
“Yes! That’s exactly it!”
“Ehh…”
I had certainly allowed her to approach Al-sama, but wasn’t this far too hasty? Even I, after knowing him for over ten years, had not gone that far yet…
“Well, um… Isn’t that a bit rushed, Gilberto? These things are like a cavalry charge. You prepare carefully, wait for the enemy formation to break, and then strike. That’s the proper way—”
“Too naive!”
After downing the rest of that horribly pungent whiskey in one gulp, Gilberto shouted. Had she drunk so much she’d gone a bit mad?
“If you dawdle like that, you end up permanently fixed in the position of ‘friend’ or ‘subordinate’—a comfortable but completely stagnant, fossilized relationship! Once that happens, it’s over!”
“Ugh!!”
Her words struck like a knife, and I instinctively clutched my chest.
“T-that’s not true! Just look at Al-sama and me! We’re practically mutually in love!”
After all, because of that incident, I had abandoned even my position as the next head of the kingdom’s greatest noble house to follow Al-sama. With that level of resolve, surely he understood my feelings.
“No matter how long you’ve known each other, there are plenty of things you won’t understand unless you say them out loud!”
“Th-that may be so, but still…”
“If you really think it’s mutual, then just tell your lord ‘I love you’ or ‘I like you’! If he answers with ‘me too,’ then it’s obviously mutual! Simple and clear!”
Gilberto was clearly very drunk, pressing the issue with reckless intensity. That was no surprise. She had already consumed an amount of alcohol that would have knocked me unconscious long ago.
“I-I-I can’t do something that embarrassing…!”
“I think secret filming is far more embarrassing! Just say ‘I love you’! You know what, if you say it together, it’s not scary! Let’s confess together!”
“S-shut up! Leave me alone!”
I shouted and drained my whiskey. Ah…! My throat burned! And it stank! This liquor was awful straight! Absolutely awful!
“Cough—cough… urgh…Y-you’re one to talk! Your proposal failed, didn’t it!”
“Ngh!!”
With a loud thud, Gilberto collapsed face-first onto the table. She trembled as she lay there, letting out pitiful groans.
“B-because… If you’re attacked by such a bizarre group… A proposal becomes impossible, doesn’t it…?”
By “bizarre,” she was surely referring to the strange bell-shaped headgear worn by the attackers. She had shown me one. It truly was unsettling.
“Even if my lord had said yes, every anniversary… Our confession day, our wedding anniversary… Those idiots would pop into my head! If I link my proposal memories with those stupid elves!”
“Ugh…Th-that would be unpleasant, yes… Though, I didn’t realize you were the type to care about anniversaries…”
I never expected this brave knight and capable commander to say something so lovestruck and girlish. I felt a bead of sweat roll down my temple, but Gilberto didn’t care.
“If they’d at least been a formidable enemy, it would’ve been fine! Overcoming a crisis together could have ignited the flames of love!”
Shouting that, she poured herself more of that foul-smelling whiskey. The bottle was finally empty. She had clearly drunk far too much, yet she continued gulping it down without hesitation.
“But they were weak enough to get wiped out by some suspicious reinforcements! What was the point of them even showing up!? They couldn’t even be proper clowns!”
“Y-yeah… You’re right.”
“There’s no way to turn that into a good memory! I absolutely don’t want to continue a confession on the day we were attacked by people like that… Ueeeh…”
Tears spilled from Gilberto’s eyes as she whined pitifully. …This was getting hard to watch.
“Uuuugh! Those elves… I won’t forgive them…”
She took a cigarette from her beloved case, stuck it in her mouth, and lit it with the oil lighter she said Al-sama had given her. The room once again filled with smoke.
“Sonia-sama, you should drink too… My treat…”
Saying that, Gilberto somehow produced a bottle of wine and began pouring it into my goblet.
…S-stop! That goblet had contained that stinking liquor! No matter how fine the wine, once mixed with that, it would just become a foul-smelling liquid!! This was bad. Very bad. Gilberto had completely turned into a troublesome drunk. What was I supposed to do…? Did I have no choice but to become drunk myself?
“Ah, damn it!”
Shouting, I reluctantly drank. …And of course, even the wine smelled awful now! If you were going to pour it, you should have at least used a fresh goblet!
