ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー
The day of the class competition finally arrived. At the same time, it marked the end of our life in handcuffs.
“We can finally say goodbye to these hateful handcuffs.”
Sophia said that with a deep sense of relief.
“Are you sure? You’re not actually going to miss them?”
“Of course not!”
Sophia shouted loudly, then—
“Now then, Frau-san. Please hand over the key to the handcuffs.”
“Aye aye, sir.”
We had been managing each other’s handcuff keys. Frau took our key out of her uniform pocket. Just as she was about to hand it over—
“Ah—”
It slipped from her palm. It fell straight down into the drainage grate at our feet, covered by iron bars, and disappeared inside.
““““…………””””
Silence fell over the scene.
“Um… the handcuff key just fell down there, didn’t it?”
Sophia asked hesitantly.
“Do-Does that mean… we’re stuck like this? Forever?”
“Well, uh…”
Frau tried to cover it up, but in the end, she seemed to give up and stuck out her tongue slightly.
“Tehepero.”
“—!?”
Sophia was struck speechless. Her mouth opened and closed like a carp waiting for food. Then—
“Ta-da.”
Frau pulled a key out of her uniform pocket.
“This was a prank. The one I dropped was a dummy key. The real one is this one. Sophia-san, were you surprised?”
“…………”
“Huh?”
“Sophia passed out. She’s foaming at the mouth.”
Berga said that while looking down at Sophia, who had rolled her eyes back and fainted. The shock of possibly being stuck in handcuffs forever must have been too much. She had collapsed on the spot.
“Frau, seriously…”
“I just wanted to ease the tension, but I guess I went too far.”
Frau scratched the back of her head with a sheepish smile, showing actual remorse for once.
This is going to be a rough road ahead.

After that, we successfully removed the handcuffs and headed into the class competition. The competition was held at the training grounds. It was located deep within the academy grounds, a combat training zone carved out of a forest.
The area was about two hundred to three hundred meters on each side. It was large enough to fit something like the Tokyo Dome from my previous life. Trees grew thickly around the perimeter, and natural rocks were used as cover. Small streams ran through the area. It had clearly been designed as a battlefield. At the edges of the zone were each team’s bases, with a single brightly colored flag raised at the center of each.
“Now then. We will begin the class competition.”
Our homeroom teacher, Cassandra, addressed the gathered students.
“The rules are simple. The first team to capture the opponent’s flag wins. Within the area, you are free to use any strategy you like. Bringing weapons is allowed. There are no particular fouls. Except killing.”
“However,” Cassandra continued, “Within this training ground, anyone who takes damage beyond a certain threshold will be teleported outside. Therefore, death is impossible. In effect, there are no real restrictions.”
The outer edge of the training ground was surrounded by a faintly glowing magical barrier. It formed a dome, completely enclosing the entire field, serving as a boundary between the inside and outside worlds.
“That’s enough explanation. Let’s get this competition started already.”
Cassandra said that and looked around at the students with a grin.
“Kehehehehehe… Every last one of you looks stiff. Not surprising. The results of this competition will determine your future.”
All the students looked pale.
“And yet, you lot seem unusually calm.”
Cassandra’s gaze turned toward us.
“That’s because we just went through something even more troublesome,” Sophia replied with a sullen expression.
She was probably talking about the prank from earlier. The relief of being freed had left no room for tension. In that sense, Frau’s prank might have worked.
“Besides, we just need to demonstrate the results of our daily training.”
“A commendable attitude.”
Cassandra snorted and began reading from the match list in her hand. Before long, our names were called.
“Oh, our opponents are that slutty guy.”
Our first opponents were a team led by a female student named Anemone. She had a flashy, carefree appearance, like a gal. Loose, fluffy hair, a casually worn uniform, and blue earrings glinting on her ears. She was one of the students who mocked me by calling me a “slut.”
Her magical power and academic performance were both above average. The rest of her team was about the same. However, they were childhood friends, and apparently had absolute confidence in their teamwork. They were always hanging out together in class.
“Individually, we can’t beat Sophia-chan, but when it comes to team battles, no one can beat us.”
“We’ll show off our bond, okay☆”
The four of them made peace signs together, forming a star shape as they declared their challenge. Then Anemone raised her hand.
“Teacher, I have a question.”
“What is it?”
“During the match, as long as we don’t kill them, nothing counts as a foul, right?”
“That’s correct.”
“So if we accidentally end up ‘doing it’ with a guy we beat, that’s fine too, right?”
“That would be acceptable.”
Cassandra answered calmly.
“Accidentally doing it is unavoidable.”
“Thank you very much☆”
Anemone and her group turned lustful gazes toward me all at once. It seemed they were planning to take advantage of the competition to jump me.
“Looks like you’re popular, Kreto.”
“Seems that way.”
They were underestimating me quite a bit. As we stepped into the training ground, we reached our base. At the center stood a brightly colored flag, raised high.
『Now then, we will begin the first round of the class competition. Do your best not to leave any regrets, and show the full extent of your meager abilities.』
Cassandra’s voice echoed from outside the training grounds. If I wanted to become a knight as a man, I needed to achieve something on the level of winning the Supreme Sword Festival. I couldn’t afford to stumble here.
